We’ve now been in Yuma, Arizona for 3 months, and it’s been an amazing time, enjoying Christmas when the weather is far from cold and white. After the new year is well under way, it’s interesting to consider our changes in 2022: A little over year ago, I was still an employee, even though it was two weeks of annual leave with one work day left to check out of a federal government job, and believe me, checking out of a federal job is hard labor. Just a year later, life is very different: I’m not waking up at zero dark thirty to go to work, even if the commute was just down the hall. Our home is now 37 feet long, and happens to be wherever we happen to be. At the moment, that’s Yuma, ... read more

We didn't sleep well after seeing a message from Microsoft just before turning out the lights. It was a notification that a hacker from Moscow had logged into his account. He reported it, but wasn't sure what else to do... Once we were up, we saw a note reminding us that the car had to be moved to the opposite side of the street for cleaning before 9:00am. Char and Jose had already for their teaching jobs. Bill went to look for a parking place but had no luck, so we decided to load up the car and I would go for a run on the beach, instead of in the neighborhood. We drove to beach where the predicted storm had already hit and the sand was blowing hard, so no run and no swim...The temperature ... read more

Geo: 32.6848, -114.625Before heading to Yuma, we had to make a cruise ship stop in Phoenix, Arizona- for our geographically challenged friend, Deb P, this is a funny thing to do since Phoenix is land-locked in a middle of an arid desert. Our mission was to hook up with the Number 1 fan of Holland America Cruise Lines, Hal G. We had met Hal on a HAL cruise ship in Brazil and we have followed his travel ever since. Hal and Kay probably travel more than we do and the vast majority of this travel seems to be conducted via the upper deck cabin of a Holland America ship situated right next to the captain's quarters. A number of passions drive feed their travel bug but one in particular seems to make Hal weak in the ... read more

This morning riding out of Flagstaff, the canyon scenery was very beautiful and the switchback descent was exhilarating. I felt that Flagstaff was very liveable, the most appealing town in the US to date! We then rode through Sedona which perhaps was more liveable than Flagstaff, certainly a tourist, artisan town. Many buildings in the adobe style, with colours that blended with the natural environment. Continued riding ... read more

BUTTERFIELD TRAIL Southern states coveted a transcontinental railroad link to California that could operate year around. It was proposed to Congress by Senator Gadsden of South Carolina but the route passed through Northern Mexico and that was not acceptable. In 1853 Gadsden was made Ambassador to Mexico with extraordinary powers to negotiate the purchase of lands needed for the railroad. The treaty was ratified in 1854 and the international boundary was shifted from the Gila River to the town of Mesilla and on to the southern border of California. The survey of that land acquisition was completed by 1856 but by then Congress was reluctant to allocate funds for construction of the railroad because of concerns about the expansion of slavery to the Territory of New Mexico. A compromise was reached for the funding of a ... read more

JACK SWILLING Jack passed away on August 12, 1878. He died in his cell at Yuma Territorial Prison from complications arising from morphine addiction. He was buried the same day in an unmarked grave in the prison cemetery and quickly forgotten. He wasn’t even convicted of a crime. He was just being held on charges of robbing a stagecoach up near Wickenburg. Local authorities there wanted to charge him under the federal jurisdiction to avoid the expense of prosecution, and Yuma was what passed for a federal jail. As it turned out the real stagecoach robbers were apprehended a few days later. It was a tough break for Jack though. He deserved better. John W Swilling was born on April Fools’ Day in 1830 at the Red House Plantation near Anderson, SC. Somewhere along the line ... read more

THOMAS R. BARD Go out to the north end of 4th Avenue and cross the river. Take a right turn at the first stop sign. It will put you on to county road S24. That road goes out to Imperial Dam after making a few twists and turns. Stay on the paved road surface and follow the painted line. In due course you will arrive at a date grove and the sleepy little community of Bard. If you go out there around Christmastime it will be a handy place to use the post office. Long lines of customers do not exist there at any time. One of the date farmers out there has collection of old rusty farm machinery that he proudly calls the Cloud Museum. The main attraction at Bard is a little store where ... read more

ALGODONES Algodones is a little Mexican border town a few miles west of Yuma. It is the furthest north that a Mexican town can be found. Remarkably if you go due north, south, east or west from there you will soon find yourself back in the United States. Algodones is the Mexican term for “cottons” it is probably in reference to the cotton pickers who live there. Sometimes it is called Molar City because of the profusion of Mexican dentists who have opened up shop there offering cheaper dental services than can be obtained in Yuma. It is also a popular destination for snowbirds looking to score cheap medications. Any clerk in an Algodones pharmacy is allowed to write a prescription for any drug. They also have the usual assortment of street venders selling the usual ... read more
