Today we went to the Grand Canyon, south rim.. it was amazing. It was a little more commercialized then we expected, but all in all it was fantastic. The colors and majesty is awsome. We went in the morning, the weather kind of turned to cloudy so the colores were a little less vibrant. Then we drove back to Williams and had lunch and decided to drive to Sedona. We are soooo glad we did. It is beautiful there. On the way we took the scenic route and it was so worth it. We drove down this canyon that overshadowed Grand Canyon by alot. So much color and mystic.....we spent the afternoon looking at galleries, and just looking. Bought a few things and enjoyed the whole day. ... read more

Never did we think we would be sitting having lunch on the famous Route 66. Williams,AZ is a cool little town. It is called the Gateway to the Grand Canyon. We arrived early today, so it was nice to set up "home sweet home" and then go an explore. We went downton, which is all shops and historic buildings. Williams is the last town in America that got overshadowed by the Hwy I-40. We enjoyed just poking around the shops. It was nice to just enjoy the day, as we have been going everyday. Tomorrow we will get up early and head to the Canyon. We want to get there for the early morning shadows for pictures. Hope you are enjoying the daily entries and the pictures. Until next time.......... read more

Jumped on the bike and hit the road before 8am this morning. Didn't have to look too hard to find route 66 as we were already on it! Route 66 (or Steinbecks 'mother road') is a wonderfully historic road although only parts of it now actually exist. Most sections have been swallowed up by the interstate 40. And some parts just lead you to a dead end! This used to be America's main street, where people would travel from east to west in search of warmer climbs, hope and opportunity. The newer freeway, albeit much more practical has rung the death knell for the neon cafes, resturants, gift shops and motels that used to line this road. Even the gas stations rarely pump gas any more! A few of these have, however, survived, such as Roys ... read more

A little juggling of schedules today: we need to get our laundry done, could look around Williams, could do a wildlife park drive, and could return the Grand canyon so Joseph can get his badge. After a nice complimentary breakfast complete with waffle makers (Donkey's voice from 'Shrek' pops in "I'm makin' waffles!"), Ky goes to the laundromat while I post postcards in town with the boys. We have a look in a souvenir shop where Joseph and I find more geodes $6 each, and a small piece of petrified wood for $3 (Ky later says that's enough rocks!). Williams looks pretty awesome with all the murals and arty-crafty places so Ky stays back to look around town while I take the boys back to the Grand Canyon. We are aiming for an 11am Ranger talk ... read more

July 15 2010 Today we got an early start up to the Grand Canyon. We arrived there about 8:30 am just ahead of all the tourist buses . But, they caught up to us around 10:00. We walked the south rim for the first 2.5 miles and then started getting on the shuttle buses that arrive every 15 minutes from any point. It was very hot. Then rangers were warning everyone to drink a lot of water and stay in the shade as much as possible. The canyon is amazing. What a wonder of nature. Can't imagine how it would have felt just coming upon it on your pioneering way out west. Breathtaking! Would love to come back and just camp there for a week to take it all in. Maybe someday. I heard more languages ... read more

July 14 2010 Today would have been my Mom’s 87th birthday. Happy Birthday Mom! Wish you were here. We Left Holbrook at 7:00 am for Joseph City where we saw the trading post “Howdy Hanks and Sitting Bull’s Indian Store and Ella’s Fronier log structure ruin. Also the Jackrabbit Trading Post. On to Winslow Arizona, headed for Winona. Took our picture at “Standin on the Corner" in Winslow, AZ”. Winslow also has/had a Valentine Diner (now closed). You remember the rebuilt diner at the museum from a previous post. Also the La Posada Hotel which is a step back in time to the 1930s. Quite lovely. After leaving Winslow we had to jump on and off I-40 a few times. We took a side trip to Meteor Crater which is a Natural Landmark. Tried to get ... read more

Today started off with a trip to the Santa Fe National Cemetary to visit Dave's mom. I was overcome with emotion and I cried. Not only for Dave but just the fact that so many people served our country. After we left there, we headed to Williams, AZ. Destination: Grand Canyon! New Mexico has lots of billboards on I40 and finally we were sucked into stopping at a place after reading 100 billboards about how awesome the place was. The place was called Stewart's. They were offering free petrified wood and a free post card!! Who could pass that up? Well, it ended up being a very interesting stop. The lady running it was in her house shoes and she told us that we could have anything we wanted at 50% off unless it was marked ... read more

After fighting the winds and heat, we finally arrived in Arizona, just south of the Gran Canyon. We did not know we would gain and hour so that was nice. The Painted Desert between Mesa Verde and Tuba City was extremely windy. Gusts up to about 60 miles per hour brought the red sands of the desert across the road, sometimes where we couldn't see 1/4 mile. The cats were a bit restless too with the motorhome reeling side to side. I didn't get many pictures because of this. There were some great rock formations too. We were disappointed that the 4 Corners park was closed for construction (open only weekends) but we might try to get there this weekend. We drove the old Route 66 through Flagstaff and it was quite interesting. Some of the ... read more

We left our hotel at 9:30 and made our way to the Hertz collection point at the airport to pick up our car for the next two weeks. We received our keys and made our way to the car, a Chrysler Sebring convertible, slight problem - the roof folded into the boot leaving no space at all for our luggage. We tried to squeeze everything in but to no avail. We couldn't even get a handbag in the boot! We never learn!! Nige went back down to reception with Andy but they insisted we take the car we had been assigned. They called Nigel over - 'Nigg all' as they keep calling him!! Its now became his name for the holiday! Eventually they agreed for us to have a mustang convertible. Scchhwweeetttt!! Within seconds all our ... read more
