Having enjoyed the splendid offerings of Californias National Parks, including meeting General Sherman (A very big tree) and withstanding the travel sickness which came from Ron's driving along the coastal roads we survived the 42 degree heat of death valley, and Nester did not break down! However...our luck did not hold out in Vegas. We managed to lose our alotted gambling fund within 3 minutes. We stayed in the Rio which was great, beat the shabby old Motels we have grown so acustomed to. Really enjoyed the all you can eat buffets, Ron managed six plates of ribs (the waistlines are sufferring). Our next destination is the Grand Canyon and surounding area over the next few days, although looking at the forecast it's going to be very, very wet! We already got hailed on while driving ... read more

Well, things started smooth enough today. We left Henderson at a decent time (although later then I wanted) and got on Rt 93. We crossed over the Hoover Dam, but first stopped at the overlook that looks out on Lake Mead. We were going to take the dam tour to see the inner workings of it, but it was $30/person, so we decided to skip it. Besides, there was quite a line ahead of us. So we took some pictures from the top, enjoyed the air conditioned restrooms, then headed into Arizona. We took a side trip to drive through Chloride, which is a "living" ghost town (pop ~150 IIRC). Lots of old structures, trailers and vehicles. We saw no people though. It was, however, the first dirt road that I got to take DarkStar down. ... read more

1st Aug. Travelled from Mesquite and visited three major places of interest in searing heat (max 113 F). First Las Vegas along the strip, second the Hoover Dam (down under 600 feet of concrete to see the turbines) and lastly the west rim of the Grand Canyon (boy! is it a long way down). Night stop - Williams AZ. Pam and George ... read more

Left Scottsdale at 7am, decided to have a bit of a competition to see who could get a truck driver to pull his horn at us first, we had to mimic him pulling his horn - we only got one, and it was my mum who got it.... flously!! We drove directly to our hotel in Williams, we arrived just after 10, but was unable to get into our room. So drove on to the Grand Canyon, we drove straight through to the desert view watch tower, Nige & Joe went up to the top, myself and my mum stopped at the first level. As we started to go back down my mum said there was no way she could manage it as there was no rail to hold onto to. This man that was coming ... read more

We finally made it out of California and headed straight for the Grand Canyon. We arrived in the evening just 50 miles south and stayed in a small town in Arizona called iWilliams/i. The two lane downtown was full of Christmas lights and Route 66 memorabilia. It was a charming welcome and refreshing to be in a small community. A place where you can tell the locals from the travelers. The only restaurant opened, iCruisers Cafe 66/i, boasted about the local brew of amber ale. I was satisfied. Many of the dinners arrived in pj's. During our two day stay most of the business remained closed. I hoped it was because of the low tourist season. In the late morning we headed up to the canyon. You should know that I am terrified of heights. But ... read more

Today we left Nigels brothers and headed for the Grand Canyon. We continued on Route 66 and drove past towns such as Bluewater - This is vastly different from the Bluewater familiar to us, and Gallup. About half an hour or so later we were in Arizona, the views in New Mexico and Arizona are definitely the best by far so far on our trip. Although my camera skills don’t justify this you really have to see it for yourself. Route 66 is pretty much shared with Interstate 40 at this point only coming off to enter specific towns that it still runs directly through. We soon required more fuel, so stopped at the next available gas station. This was in an Indian Reservation. You could only use cards here, and would it accept our cards….. ... read more

We altered our agenda somewhat today - due to a late start, an unrealistic initial agenda, and low energy (Mom). We made it to our destination in Williams, AZ but we haven’t seen the Grand Canyon yet. Going tomorrow morning will allow us more time to see it and then head west toward Vegas. I’d hoped to reach mid-Nevada by tomorrow night, but as long as we land somewhere with a casino, I’ll be fine. Poker room, here I come! It felt like we were just driving for most of the day, but we did, in fact, see two fantastic places. We skipped the visit to Acoma and the ancient dwellings of Sky City, which I hope I can see on another trip. It would have taken up too much of our day. Instead, we drove ... read more
