Kanab to Page was painless, reason for coming back to Lake Powell was to see Antelope Canyon that we didn't get to see last time. Incredible, you walk a short way to the top of the crack in the ground and walk down very steep metal steps that have been bolted into the wall of the canyon leading down into it. The photographs capture the strange and beautiful formations from mother nature that have carved a whole other world into the ground. You walk about 1/4 of a mile through the slot canyon and up a few steps. You have to have a guide take you through as it is Indian land and they don't want you just wondering on your own. Well worth coming back for. We only stayed a couple of nights and then ... read more

When we arrived there were already five cars in the car park, dashing our hopes of being alone. It was still dark, though the eastern horizon was considerably brighter than when we had left the hotel a few minutes ago. Excitement had replaced the groggy, pre-coffee feeling of a 5am alarm. We stepped out of the car and felt the chill of the cold hours of the end of a winter's night in the desert. We'd already missed a sunrise at the Grand Canyon so I was delighted to be doing this, whatever we had to suffer. It was a half-mile walk over a sandy hill to get to the rim, it should have been easy but the cold and altitude left us breathless. When we arrived we found that the best position had not yet ... read more

R: Another one in short succession. Today we went to the most amazing place. I'm going to let the pictures do the talking (scroll right to the bottom for more!). We stayed overnight in Page, which is an extremely dull new town that was built for the construction of the dam. It did have a great street that had all the towns churches in one handy cluster (10+), but that was about as exciting as it got. In the morning we took a pickup truck out to Upper Antelope canyon which is a slot canyon, meaning it's no more than a metre wide in places, and the sandstone gets carved by successive flood waters leaving amazing whirlpool marks, debris and etchings in the Najavo sandstone. The floodwaters enter every summer, some being higher than others, and ... read more

We had a few different experiences in Page, AZ. The first was our trip to Antelope Canyon which is on Native Navajo lands. In order to get into this canyon you have to book way ahead to reserve a place on the guided tour into the canyon. Normally the pictures you most often see of this canyon are the spot light of sun streaming through the hole at the top of the canyon. However, that only happens at certain times and on only a few months of the year, so we were not able to see that. But the canyon itself is very interesting. In order to get there they pack 14 people into a large 4X4 vehicle to drive out to the canyon. So we did some real 4 wheeling!!! After leaving the paved road, ... read more

Monday, 29 June, 2015 Bob and Gena left early on their way east, while we will continue west then south. They had commitments they had to get home for. We miss them already. We drove back through Vernal, with all the pretty flowers, then on to Roosevelt, where we stopped for fuel at a Pilot. But their pumps didn't work and we had to go elsewhere. As we headed south we went over a pass that was over 9100 feet high. It was a pretty steep grade and we were moving pretty slowly by the time we reached the top. The downhill was much faster, but seemed to go on forever. We finally reached the interstate and a little rainfall that dropped the temperature from 97 to 69 degrees, then back up to 94 within twenty ... read more

Hoodoos, Toadstool r... read more
