We arrived at the Grand Canyon around dinner time. We checked a couple lookouts then decided to make dinner and watch the sunset. It was a beautiful evening and we could have stared at the canyon for hours. ... read more

Last night we slept well. It may have been minus 14 outside but the central heating means our room is like a sauna and it’s quiet like you only get miles from the city. I take a shower and count the towels. There are 15. I’m tempted to return to reception and discuss the environment some more. We leave our room to discover a herd of deer in the car park trying to work out why their food is covered with weird white stuff. After a tantalising glimpse last night, today we have a full day to explore the Canyon (from the top – it’s way too icy to consider going down unequipped). We take a shuttle bus to its furthest destination then walk back along the rim trail. There seems to be two sorts of ... read more

The big nature day of the trip delivered on all its promises. A full day in Arizona, and I’ve finally been gotten back to a place where I’ve already been before. I’ve been seeing something new ever since we left San Antonio last Thursday after the Alamo Bowl. But once we pulled into the Grand Canyon this afternoon, I was back on familiar territory. Of course this time, I went in the opposite direction from before. We woke up in Page, Arizona, which is the gateway to several of the natural locales in the area. Just outside of Page is the Horseshoe Bend area, which I had seen in photos online and from friends. I was so jealous of those views, and when I was planning this trip, I knew I had to make a stop ... read more

The National Park has an awesome shuttle service ?You can ride it and hop on/off along the entire South Rim of the Canyon and it’s free ?There is a train ? depot, market, lodges, shops, trails, and wildlife all accessible from the Campground, and of course, amazing views ? We hiked ~7 miles of the Trail of Time ??‍???‍? Check this out... 1 meter = 1 million years 4560 long steps to walk the entire trail Earth’s age 4560 million years Earth ? and solar system formed from a spinning nebular cloud ☁️ of dust and rock Kathy and I almost decided not to check out the South Rim since we had seen the North Rim a few years ago...so glad we did! The views are simply amazing and never ending. The expanse of this natural ... read more

After an amazing experience at the Petrified Forest and Painted Desert, we continued west. The drive on 40W (new Route 66) is endless...you can see for miles - fields/deserts, wide open spaces. In some areas you can see the Historic Route 66 (2 lane road) right next to 40W. Off in the distance, trains ? We can only imagine what it would have been like driving on Route 66 back in the day. You can pop on and off from the new Route 66 (40W) to the Historic Route 66 along the way. My dad, when he was a young boy, travelled the now Historic Route 66 with his parents and talked about no air conditioning, windows rolled down, and canvas bags ? filled with water ? attached to the front of the car ? for ... read more

blog 10-23-17 Grand Canyon the second day After discussing our options we opted to head to the east end of the park first to the Desert Watch Tower then come back to the house for lunch then about 4 head to the Bright Angel Lodge to view sunset. With the plan in place we were in the park by 10 am but didn't get to the tower for another 1/2 hour because it was 24 miles away. The first stop was to find the place where the stamp was for our Passport books and discovered it was in the tower. So several pictures later we got our books stamped then headed up 4 flights of stairs to explore the tower. It was built in 1923 by the company that was trying to develope tourism in the ... read more

In mid September of 2017 Anne and I traveled to the southwest with Anne's sister, Jane, to visit the North Rim of the Grand Canyon in Arizona and Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Utah. After these visits, and after seeing Jane off on her return flight, Anne and I went on to do a bit of hiking in Idaho. Below is a recap of where we went, what we saw, and a bunch of pictures from the trip. On Friday, September 8th, Jane flew from Richmond to Atlanta while we flew from Greenville. We met in Atlanta and flew on together to Las Vegas where we rented a car for the drive on to the North Rim. Our flight was supposed to arrive around 12:30 but was delayed a bit over an hour which put us ... read more

Most of today was simply riding back to the North Rim on the Transcanyon Shuttle, an awesome service that has some sort of working relationship with the NPS. But I really really wanted breakfast at El Tovar, too. So we got up at 5:30am, which sounds more awful than it actually was considering we had been up at 3am the past two mornings and we were all asleep last night by 9pm. Plenty of glorious sleep was had. We walked over to the hotel with all our gear- there were elk everywhere. So many elk that I wasn't really sure how to walk around them. Lots of tourists taking photos, too. The elk herds in Crescent City were alot more wary of humans than these guys and they seemed to not care a bit when we ... read more
