We walked just a few hundred yards this morning and boarded our section of the Grand Canyon Train at about 9:00 O'clock. Gorgeous day for a train ride and hike in the Grand Canyon. The train ride took just over 2 hours and we had entertainment from cowboys, sheriffs, conductors, musicians and a very talkative narrator for the journey! The interior of the train doesn't look any different than it did probably back in the early 1900's and was an authentic experience of how you would expect an old train journey through the wild west. We only had about 3 hours at the Grand Canyon itself but made sure we got as much walking in as possible. We started off down Bright Angel Trail, which is the trail most used and takes you down all the ... read more

"It's a place that transcends simple descriptions..." blurted out a voice from the radio as we entered the national park. The spokesman was only partially right... it also defies complex description. How can you explain the majesty and grandeur of one of the wonders of the natural world? Mere words don't seem sufficient to capture its glory. I've heard it described as, "the one place that lives up to all the hype about it". As for me, I was left speechless, almost breathless, by my first glance over the rim. Getting to the Grand Canyon We had walked through the heat of an LA morning, having said goodbye to Brett and Michelle, to pick up a rental car. Here we'd gotten a shock... as we didn't have an American car insurance policy it was mandatory for ... read more

When considering a road trip across the states, one of the 2 most popular images that may well come up on a search engine is photos of a 2 lane road that travel across beautiful landscapes (Route 66) with beautiful images of dusty red rocky terrain. Tall mountains, deep valleys and the draw dropping pictures of people standing at the edge of a collection of rocks with a huge drop beneath them. The Grand Canyon. We decided very early on that we would only visit mainly cities we had always wanted to visit and catch the buses to save a bit of money. Even so, we still wanted a taste of a possible future trip - road tripping across the states visiting national parks, staying in a tent under the stars. You get the picture. We ... read more

Geo: 36.0262, -112.136A lot of very cool things happened to us on the way to the Grand Canyon and Monument Valley but Bonnie D, in a private email to DH that I was able to obtain via the Freedom of Information Act (also known as the DH Can't Keep A Secret Act), suggested that reading my blog was like doing homework. I am sulking. Enjoy the photos.... read more

R: Now, this is the part of the trip which I did before I met Cate, but in reverse. We're trying to do it in a little bit of a different way this time so it's fresh for both of us. We entered the Grand Canyon NP via the East entrance which comes past the desert view lookout tower which affords you a great first glimpse of the Grand Canyon. I asked Cate what she thought of it at that moment and she said "I thought it would be steeper". I guess after seeing so many amazing landscapes in such quick succession, it's easy to get blasé about these things - and we both have. As we drove round the views got more and more impressive as we saw it from different angles and we got ... read more

There is so much to see and do at the Grand Canyon in Arizona. Some people just don’t appreciate it, and they think of it as a boring hole in the ground. Yet if you take the time to explore the rich beauty here you will be amazed at all it provides you with. If you get the chance an aerial view of the Grand Canyon is perfect. This will allow you to see how wide and long the canyon really is. When you are viewing it from land it can be easy to be misled about just how large it truly is. You can also rent horses to go deep in the Grand Canyon. There are marked trails but it can take several hours each direction. If you plan to do this on your visit, ... read more

Monday morning we hit the road quite early because we had a long drive ahead and storms were forecast for later in the day. The road from Moab to Flagstaff (522Km or 324 miles) went through dry desert land and several Native Indian Reservations. We arrived at our camp site in Flagstaff and got all set up in dry weather and before dark. Tuesday morning the storms hit this area. Lots of thunder and lightning and heavy rain. Apparently almost 2 inches of rain fell that day. We were so thankful to be in our cozy, warm RV and have a day to rest up a bit. Wednesday was the day we had scheduled for the Grand Canyon and it was a PERFECT DAY to view the canyon lands and take lots of pictures. From Flagstaff ... read more

This was Bob's 2nd time to see to see the Grand Canyon and my first. There aren't enough words to describe the beauty of it all -- it was hot during the day and really cooled off when the sun started coming down. Although the Park was crowded, we managed to find a place with only a few people, then landed at one of the Lodges for a cocktail while watching the sun go down. It was just a great day. So now it's Thursday, we had a beautiful drive to Moab, UT. Landed at a great place for dinner called the Sunset Grill, which is the former home of the "King of Uranium" - Charlie Steen. The food was great, right along with the view. My phone and internet coverage has been very spotty, even ... read more
