Forget injuries, never forget kingnesses.____Confucius Sunday, June 26, 2005, Sunday. At the center of downtown Sitka is a large Russian Orthodox Church. So we thought we would attend service there. However we didn’t realize it was two hours of standing. The decorative church is filled with silver and gold everything and is quite ornate. After a half hour we drifted out the doorway. We THOUGHT we would be on the ferry today going to Juneau, but someone got the day wrong. Our first clue was when we got to the dock and no one was there. We recouped and decided to camp at Starrigavan Bay Campground in the Tongass N.P. It is a lovely location nestled in the forest. We need a few things and traveled back to Sitka. The movie is hard to find ... read more

A person is only as good as what they love._______Saul Bellow June 24, 2005, Friday. The system of getting on and off the ferry is now down pat. Our campground is right next to the ferry dock, and 13 mile to downtown Sitka. We have not had any cell reception with Verizon, since WA. People with Cellular One are fine. Today was our first mail pick-up, everything went smoothly, thank you Jamie and Denise and Mike!! We walked around downtown. Sitka faces the Pacific Ocean. The waters offshore are broken by a myriad of small-forested islands, which are just lovely. Snow-capped mountains flank the town. However, when the cruise ships dock, the town is flooded with tourists. It changes the natural beauty into a carnival atmosphere. Our neighbors, Jim and Bonnie graciously invited us to ... read more

People are unreasonable, illogical, and self-centered. Love them anyway. _____Mother Teresa June 23, 2005, Friday. Bob and I decided to get away from each other for a while, a little too much togetherness. I walked out to Petroglyph Beach. It is believed the Indians before the Tlingits, carved these symbols on the rocks at the cove. Why? Well, folks don’t agree. Some guesses include a tribute to the great salmon, a fish that returns year after year, and sustains the natives. Another thought is, the symbols welcome back the fishermen to the safety of home. Bob was walking, looking, and talking with the town’s people. This is a nice friendly town. He talked with the city manger. This town went from 3700 to 2700 population, and now 1900. The sawmill closed and it hurt, but ... read more

We had two wonderful weeks camping and exploring Alaska. We spent several days in the Seward area, where the sun always shined and the 24 hours of daylight made it possible to take on 16 mile hikes without fear of getting back before dark. We had no encounters with bears, which made me happy as I didn't know if my dog Ceali would try to take them on and only end up making them mad and leading them to us. We got to see Mt. Denali from the Denali State Park (dogs are not allowed in the national park) and grizzly bear cubs from the bus within the national park. My dad and I had 24 nights of making camp every night and sleeping on the ground, cooking our meals over my camp stove, lots of ... read more

Man is the only animal that blushes. Or needs to._Mark Twain Again we awoke early, thanks to the ferry whistle, and started to explore downtown Wrangle. It is an island about 30 miles long with a population of 1,900 and sits in the middle of the Tongass National Forest. Wrangle has been hit hard economically due to constraints on the timber industry. When the pulp mill closed, it lost almost 1/3 of it population. There is not much sympathy for environmental causes. We found the new museum, the James and Elsie Nolan Center. It is a modern structure with a magnificent collection of Tlingit (Indian) artifacts and historical pieces. The local electrician checked out the refrigerator problem. It seems it wasn’t installed properly and is leaking propane. So we can run it on electric when ... read more

An integral (integrated?)being knows without going, sees without looking, and accomplishes without doing. Lao Tzu LINKS Name TRAVEL TIPS June 21, 2005, Wednesday. We were up early again. We though the idea of renting a motorboat and taking it out on Clover Passage seemed like a good idea. Well, with PFD in place, a young man, Colon, instructed Bob on how to operate the motor, however, he did not allow for a hands on lesson. Motor humming, Bob at the controls, we proceeded up onto the dock!? Whoops?! Wrong way! Given the angle at which we were hanging off the dock, I don’t know why we didn’t go into the “drink”. (Remember this water has been carved by glaciers, so it is about 1000 feet deep!) Colon to the rescue, this 15 year old, very calmly ... read more

My hopes are not always realized, but I always hope.______Ovid LINKS Name TRAVEL TIPS June 19, 2005, Sunday. We were awakened by an employee of the ferry going door-to- door, knocking, and calling,” One hour ‘til Ketchikan”. We have noticed folks in Alaska are a bit “lay-back”. They move slowly and efficiency is not high on their list of priorities. After docking, we drove off the ferry and headed to the Safeway. For some reason our “frig” isn’t working properly? We need some supplies. Downtown Ketchikan is quite dependent on tourism. Everyday cruise ships stop and the tourists flock into town. As we scouted around, we inquired about a plane trip to the fjords, it seems pricey. As we continued to walk the weather turned rainy and cooler. A good rainproof jacket with hood is ... read more

To be able to look back upon one’s life in satisfaction, is to live twice.____Kahil Gibran LINKS Name TRAVEL TIPS June 20, 2005, Tuesday. Since the day began drizzly and foggy, we were not anxious to schedule a flight to the fjords. Our first stop was to pick up the bikes. In Ketchikan you can go north or south, west is to the sea and east is to the mountains. So we biked south to Saxman Totem Pole Park, complete with clan/lodge house. We both liked the idea of the talking stick. When one holds the “talking stick” it is that person’s turn to talk, no one else may speak, I want one!! The bike trail runs along the water and as we returned we stopped at the “red-light” district. During the hay-day of the ... read more

Anyone who keeps the ability to see beauty in every age of life really neve grows old.____Franz Kafka LINKS Name TRAVEL TIPS June 18, 2005, Saturday. This is a full day on the ferry as we move closer to Ketchikan, Alaska. Our room/berth was just above the motor and next to an outside door. So, between the motor and the door slamming it wasn’t the most restful night. We were up early looking for orca whales, but not a one appeared. The Forest Service has a Ranger on board and he/she gives talks several times a day. The ferry has also set two outside decks for tents or lounge chairs, campers. It is called the solarium and has heating elements in the ceiling for the lounge chair campers. The campers also have the opportunity to ... read more

June 13, 2005 - Sunrise 4:24 am - Sunset 11:37 pm - High 70 F The past week or two has been pretty eventful. It started out with a "fun jump"/picnic. My whole company jumped from C130's (that's a medium sized cargo plane) and landed on the drop zone where the wives, children, and soldiers who couldn't jump had set up a picnic. It was a pretty fun day. The mosquitos were again quite impressive. I saw a small child carried away and drained like a raisen. Best of all, no one got hurt on the jump. I may not have explained yet the dynamics of a military jump. On TV, and in the civilian world, we see sky divers steer themselves around the sky and float in for a feather light landing. Well, the Army ... read more
