What a rude awakening! We had to be at our disembarkation point by 7:15. We ate a quick picnic breakfast, packed the last few things, and joined the crowds on the elevator and in the hallway near our exit. Actually, the disembarkation was a marvel of efficiency. Heavy luggage collected the night before had colour-coded tags. Passengers and their departure times were organized by transportation mode and times. When we descended the ramp (into a very strong wind), we walked along a structured route into a hangar-type building, where we found our luggage and lined up for airport check-in. Whittier was hardly a town – residents lived in one high-rise, built for the military installation that used to be here. Now decommissioned, the port facilities had been upgraded by the Alaska government to attract cruise ships. ... read more

From Glacier Bay to College Fjordwas a long sail. During the day we did our walking, and then we rose to the fourteenth deck to the very-mini golf course. We had played it a few times, giggling more than golfing. For this our farewell game, the wind was pushing its way around the ship’s superstructure, which usually gave some shelter for one’s putting. Today, if the ball was hit just right (wrong), the wind rolled it along so fast that it could run uphill into the next “green”. All this made us giggle even more. One round was enough today! This morning we had been invited for a tour of the bridge. Earlier in the week, a couple we had dinner with mentioned that they’d had such a tour. They’d asked at the Purser’s office how ... read more

North America » United States » Alaska » Glacier Bay August 12th 2004

Our practice of walking around the Promenade deck was ideally suited to our day in Glacier Bay. All day we sailed slowly up the long, relatively narrow bay, and back out again. Periodically, the Park Rangers, who boarded for the purpose, pointed out significant sights and explained the geology or zoology displayed on all sides. The Lampblugh Glacier was my first experience with a blue glacier. In pictures, the turquoise looks like a photographic trick, but it is truly that beautiful, garish colour. Black dirt and rocks slash through the blue like a crazy, natural penchant for fashion. Further on, the Margerie Glacier favours pure white, with a few fine grey stripes. Deep inside, behind the gently curved ice towers at the ed... read more

North America » United States » Alaska » Skagway August 11th 2004

Another morning, and we are in Skagway, the only town on our itinerary that is connected by roads to any other place. Also, the only day with cloud and some rain. We ate breakfast quickly, to get to the bus by 8:30. On the bus, we settled in for the day. The guide/driver drove around the streets of Skagway pointing out the highlights of the tiny town. The restored main streets were certainly most picturesque, but we also remarked on the small school (classes up to high school) and business centre. The train station and the tour boats are the biggest businesses, limited in time from May to September. Along the highway, we saw scenery reminiscent of BC and western Alberta. After only about 30 – 40 minutes, we actually crossed the international border into BC. ... read more

This morning when we parted our curtains, the calm expanse of Juneau harbor greeted our eyes. The water was as still as a mirror. A few quiet boats parted the serene surface. We soaked-in the blue scenery as we relaxed through breakfast. What a contrast off the ship! From dock to town, tourist traps pressed against the crowded sidewalks. At least four cruise ships dominated the waterfront, all with passengers eager to buy. We jostled our way through the crowds, only stopping to buy a lanyard for Ruth (more on this later). A few blocks back from the harbor, a quietly charming town revealed itself. With the mild climate and long light into the nights, flowers bloomed profusely. Climbing one of the steep streets, we saw a house with virtually no land, but adorned with flower ... read more

North America » United States » Alaska » Ketchikan August 9th 2004

This morning we just had to get out of bed – even though it was only 6:00! (We had gone to bed at 10:30 the night before, and we continued throughout the cruise to find the air and excitement soporific.) Since we were on the sea-ward side of the ship, we had a front-row seat at Ketchikan O’Hare. Every minute or so, sea planes landed or took off. Occasionally, two were landing at the same time or one was landing seemingly in the take-off path of another. Plus, fishing boats and tourist fishing boats were making their way out of the harbour. All through breakfast and until we left to see the town, this air-borne hustle bustle was fascinating. Ruth was a little surprised and quite proud to see that all the planes were Canadian de ... read more

We finally escaped Anchorage on 21 July 2004 - a day almost as memorable as 11 June 2004 (last day at Bloomberg). Now, does anyone have any idea how far it is from Anchorage to Vancouver? Nor do I, but it is a very, very long way. It took us 7 days, 13 lifts, one 36 hour ferry and one 24 hour bus ride to make the journey. The first flight out of Anchorage was on the 28th July and we thought this was a preferable alternative to staying put. I shan't bore you with the predictable and easy lifts we received, but a couple stand out in the memory. First off was Kenny and Laverne who were native Americans on their way back from hospital. They lived in Copper Centre and drove a huge Chevvy ... read more

Salamanca and I visited Denali National Park, on a spur of the moment vacation for a couple days off. We rented a car the day before and that was the extent of our preplanning. I guess thats how we ended up sleeping on a hill, in a bog, under the, well, not quite stars, more like one star, the sun. Thats what one gets when the sun never sets.... read more
