Anyone who keeps the ability to see beauty in every age of life really neve grows old.____Franz Kafka LINKS Name TRAVEL TIPS June 18, 2005, Saturday. This is a full day on the ferry as we move closer to Ketchikan, Alaska. Our room/berth was just above the motor and next to an outside door. So, between the motor and the door slamming it wasn’t the most restful night. We were up early looking for orca whales, but not a one appeared. The Forest Service has a Ranger on board and he/she gives talks several times a day. The ferry has also set two outside decks for tents or lounge chairs, campers. It is called the solarium and has heating elements in the ceiling for the lounge chair campers. The campers also have the opportunity to ... read more

June 13, 2005 - Sunrise 4:24 am - Sunset 11:37 pm - High 70 F The past week or two has been pretty eventful. It started out with a "fun jump"/picnic. My whole company jumped from C130's (that's a medium sized cargo plane) and landed on the drop zone where the wives, children, and soldiers who couldn't jump had set up a picnic. It was a pretty fun day. The mosquitos were again quite impressive. I saw a small child carried away and drained like a raisen. Best of all, no one got hurt on the jump. I may not have explained yet the dynamics of a military jump. On TV, and in the civilian world, we see sky divers steer themselves around the sky and float in for a feather light landing. Well, the Army ... read more

May 26, 2005 - Sunrise 4:43am - Sunset 11:09pm - Actual Dark Hours 12:45am-3:30am Today is our third anniversery, and we celebrated last weekend by going to Seward for the weekend. I can't tell you how beautiful this state is. Some of you asked me to see more pictures of the landscape up here, and I will not disappoint. Highlights Before we get to Seward, lets hit the highlights of the last couple of weeks. First, I completed my combatives course and tied for third place in the honor graduate tournament. My body hurt for the next week. Then, I took a week long combat first aid course and learned to give IV's and shove tubes up peoples noses. The interesting part about that is we practiced on each other. I got three IV's and ... read more

Hello out there, We woke to rain and gloomy skies but now at ten am the sky has opened to allow the sun to shine through. Today is a day of laundry, repacking, making grocery lists, cleaning up our messes and various articles/possessions from throughout the house, cleaning handprints off the windows and filling holes Dot dug in the yard. Tonight we are having a "weenie roast" out in the yard and some smores. A farewell bbq. Today is full of lots of things that need to get done and so I won't say too much here. The girls get out of school for the last time this year at 130 in the afternoon. Dot has her travel certificate appointment at 2pm at the vets office and the girls are at Girl Scouts at 3pm-5pm today ... read more

I've spent this week learning modern Army combatives (ie hand to hand combat). It's really great stuff based on Brazilian Ju Jit Su (the art of fighting in a telephone booth). It's all wrestling, chokes, and arm bars. I'm really enjoying the training, and I'm really good at it. I wrestled about fifty guys today and only lost once. The downside is I wrestled about FIFTY guys today! I am beat up and sore and have a nice black eye to show for my troubles. Tomorrow we have to try to shoot in on the instructors while they pound us with gloved fists. Should be fun. ;-) Laura has been awsome caring for her wounded hubby. She's still trying to fight out from under the mountain of junk we've accumulated, and she's finding a place for ... read more

Hey everyone, Lisa, Jake, the kids and I have been staying at our dental hygeniest's house. She so graciously allowed us to stay here in her wonderfully big pyramid house. Her view is spectacular! There are about ten horses that graze around her property and we can go through the pasture to the beach below. Her property rests at the edge of the bluff overlooking Kachemak Bay and the Kenai Mountains. She is such as sweetheart of a lady and we are all so grateful to have become friends with her. There are pictures attached of our days here so far. We all leave on Saturday morning or Friday night. I don't mind leaving Friday night, it gives us a head start on our travel. My dog Dot is a clamming dog. She finds a clam ... read more

Hey to all my past, present, and future extended family! This is Mike, the traveler extrordinaire, giving a breath of fresh life to my travel blog. The funny thing about writing down my experiences and adventures, I have found, is that the more into them I get, the less desire and inspiration I have to actually write about them for other people. I notice its the same effect on my level of desire to take pictures, as well! Perhaps I get so caught up in the inner journey, that it becomes like a mini-vacation to my outer world...I think. :-) First off, how the HELL is everyone out there in email land? I would like to encourage each and every one of you to drop me a line if you feel so inclined, I love hearing ... read more
