The problem at the moment is that we are tearing around the place much more than we ever did in India and public internet access here in America is less common and more expensive than there. Hence the diary doesn't get updated often and when we do it's difficult to remember everything or anything we have done. Alaska is huge and wild. And expensive. It seems old age Americans like to cruise up the west coast, to places like Anchorage, Juneau and Whittier and then experience 'wild Alaska' in total luxury. You can pay $5000 for a week long 'back country' fishing experience which in reality is a luxury transport, 5 star lodge and someone to hold your fishing rod for you. $500 gets you flown in the interior to land next to 30 bears feeding ... read more

G'day everyone! Well this is the last bit of the trip up in Alaska. Did a fair bit of travel this section so this is a little longer. It's hard to believe I've almost spent a whole month here in Alaska. I think that's plenty enough time. I would've liked to do more hiking, but the weather has been more wet than usual, so that's kind of shelved that (we've had 3 100% sunny days, even Alaskans reckon that's wet). I would've liked to hike a few more remote areas like the Wrangell Mountains. If you hire a car in Alaska, there's a lot of roads that you're not allowed to travel on because of being not well maintained gravel trails. There are really only 6 major highways you can travel, and while Alaska is big, ... read more

Hi everyone! Another blog from AK. Since the last one, we have been journeying around the main bit of Alaska. Landed in Fairbanks and drove straight to Denali National Park for a tour. The only way to see the park is either on foot or on a tour bus. The tour was great. We had a good driver who was quite humourous, and we saw stacks of wildlife....dall sheep, ptarmigans, snowshoe hare, and grizzlies! A momma bear and her three cubs walked straight by my window. An awe inspiring experience. We then drove down to Talkeetna for a flight over Mt. McKinley. When we got up the next day though, the mountain was too clouded in so our flight was cancelled. It didn't matter though as our flight to Fairbanks went straight past the big mountain. ... read more

it's got to be just another quick update because we're moving on in a few minutes. flying into barrow, at the top of the world , 180 miles insode the arctic circle. We also need to find out at the airport if the fact that Northwest airlines have just gone bust will effect us at all. they were only supposed to fly us to japan, so it's not a big problem!! so our first 4 days in alaska have been alot of fun. you can either either spend an absolute fortune being spoon fed the best of alaska - $5000 for a 5* week long fishing trip, $700 dollars to fly to see bears, $500 to land planes on mountains , $300 to walk and climb on ice, or you can use your initiative and find ... read more

Hi there! Apologies for the delayed blog. SE Alaska is a tourist area, and it ain't hard to find a $10/hr internet connection, and they're rarely under $5/hr. We started our trip on the Alaska Marine Highway. Most of the places in SE Alaska don't have road access and rely on a series of ferries to connect to the Lower 48. The cruise to Ketchikan was good. Arrived in Ketchikan to rain. Ketchikan has the highest rainfall of any place in North America with over 13 feet of rain annually. While in Ketchikan, we stayed at the New York Hotel where we had two single beds in a small room. Accommodation is quite expensive here in SE Alaska, and just a room like that was over US$100 per night. It had a very steep staircase to ... read more

ALASKA CRUISE August 5 - 12, 2005 Bill, Linda, Ed, Charlotte Day 1, Friday The four of us left early in the morning for the airport, arriving in plenty of time to enjoy an hour or so in the President’s Club before boarding our Continental flight to Seattle. Unfortunately, when we got to Seattle, we discovered that our connecting flight to Anchorage on Air Alaska had been cancelled and that the airline was trying to book the passengers on other flights. We were lucky to get on a flight that left two hours later and would just barely allow us to catch the ship before it sailed. They assured us that our baggage would be put on the same plane, and in fact, we were 45 minutes late in departing, ostensibly because they were still loading ... read more

Well, we finally arrived in the 2nd hardest state to travel to in the beautiful United States. My first impressions were, majored in environmental science, that this is the greates place on earth. The water is so clean, trees too green, absolutely beautiful! My dad and I are crusing the inside passage with stops in Ketchikan Skagway, Juneau, & Sitka. Then the land protion is Anchorage, Fairbanks, Denali, Valdez, then back to Anchorage. FAst forward In Juneau we took a helicopter ride to the top of t a glacier. This was the greatest flight of my life; fast, great visuals, and a little scary! The pilot was an experienced bush pilot. He took us on a wild ride, but felt completely safe. The glacier was excellent, espically the water *(check pic caption). In Sitka: Prior to ... read more

No act of kindness,no matter how small is ever wasted. Alsop The lion & the mouse August 1, 2005,Monday. We left Fairbanks and stopped at the North Pole for breakfast. One guess how this town makes it money…..Yes, everything is done around the Christmas theme. I my opinion “overkill” and touristy, but Mr. Bob enjoyed himself. The drive on the Road to the End of the World, did indeed seem like the End of the World was our destination as we bounced along on a dirt road. Chicken was our first stop, population 40 or so. Once this was a thriving mining town not so now. This “town” does not have electricity, and is completely run by a generator. The miners wanted to name this tent city Ptarmigan, a chicken-like critter seen everywhere, but alas ... read more

Life is a daring adventure or nothing at all.-----Helen Keller Sorry, you haven’t heard from us in a while. We have been busy having fun. Plus it is hard to get connected. So we will do what we can and finish these at a later date. We are in Jasper and heading to Bamff next, the Rockies are awesome!!! YOU WANT TO STAY TUNED, BECAUSE WE HAVE LOT OF PICTURES TO ADD BEARS!!!!!!!!!!. July 23, 2005, Saturday. We are in Denali and are up at 5 AM to take the bus to Wonder Lake. Denali’s claim to fame is probably it’s remote location, the extreme and difficult terrain and the fact is, this is WILDERNESS! Once a dirt road was developed and people began coming, the park services restricted the use of private vehicles. So ... read more
