The first thing that struck me about Anchorage was that when we stepped out of the airport at one in the morning, it was still light outside. I hadn't realised that Anchorage was so far north, but here in summer, the sun never sets. Which is only, say, marginally surreal. We stayed overnight in a small little hotel run by a Pakistani woman and her husband. Mum had a good little hobnob with her about Indian spices and whatnot - apparently there's no Indian food, grocery stores or restaraunts to be found anywhere in Anchorage because the local Indo-Asian population of 70-odd families (a sizeable little community) refuse to support it. Oddly, they'd rather import their spices from south of the border - that is, Canada - instead of having food available for them locally. But ... read more

Hi Everyone, I have some good news and some bad news depending on how you look at it. We have officially started our long drive home. We left Alaska behind with fond memories and a special place in my heart. Visiting Alaska has been a dream of mine since I can remember and once again I have fulfilled a part of my dreams. We went to so many places in AK that it seemed like we were there forever, Fairbanks, Denali, Chena Hot Springs, Seward, Kenai, Soldotna, Homer, Anchorage, Valdez, Wrangell St. Elias but I could spend a lifetime in Alaska and still not see it all. I already have other destinations in mind for the next time (when I fly there). Valdez was pretty cool; on the way down it was such a beautiful drive ... read more

Greetings all! Just a brief addendum to our journal entry of last night. We've had many requests for mail drop addresses, so I wanted to send our first one along to you. We will be arriving in Glacier Bay within a week or so, and then passing back through there two weeks later, and then in Kake, AK sometime around mid-July, if all goes as planned. If anyone would like to mail anything to us, you can do so at these addresses. Both places have agreed to hold items for our arrival. You will need to write all the lines for them to know what to do with it. PLEASE HOLD FOR ARRIVAL: Jeff Frigon and/or Stephanie Webber (sea kayakers) Visitor Information Center Glacier Bay National Park P.O. Box 140 Gustavus, AK 99826-0140 PLEASE HOLD FOR ... read more

Finally, the moment we've all been waiting for... a blog entry that actually includes paddling! We finally finished up our business in Skagway on June 8, after a trip to the Yukon, the curing of the epoxy on Steph's boat, and the eagerly awaited arrival of our tent pole replacement. (YAY team Retlin!). Amidst lots of contradictory advice (opinions), we were faced with the decision of whether to shove off that night or to get a Voyageur start early the following morning. We opted for the early morning departure despite good conditions the night before. We saw Pete and Phil off on an overnight paddling trip of their own with a pizza from the Red Onion, and headed home for an early bedtime. Dawn (if there is such a thing here) found Lynn Canal mirror calm- ... read more

Hi Everyone, We are now touring away through the coastal towns and villages of Alaska. Right now we are on the Kenai Peninsula and have visited almost every town so far; Seward, Soldotna, Kenai, Anchor Point, Nillichick, and Homer. Everything here has been so beautiful and unexpected. We started out in Seward, Alaska visiting the harbor and Kenai Fjords National Park. The town is situated on the Gulf of Alaska and Resurrection Bay which is surrounded by coastal mountains. The mountains are beautiful and there are so many glaciers visible from the streets of the town. We indulged in some fresh seafood and walked around the harbor. The next day we went to Exit Glacier, which is part of the Kenai Fjords National Park and took some lovely hikes right to the glacier. When we arrived ... read more

Hi everyone, Greetings form Alaska. We spent the weekend in Denali National Park camping and enjoying the scenery. Denali is such a beautiful place that it almost seems fake. The panoramic views of the arctic tundra, boreal forests, and majestic mountains seem too perfect, like they are painted on a canvas and put on the windows of the bus. Denali prides itself on remaining a wilderness area and to that extent you are no allowed to drive private vehicles into the park, rather there is a bus system in place that takes you wherever you need or want to go. At first I though our Denali experience was going to be less than desirable because on the way down to the park we were stuck in about 2 hours of traffic due to a raging forest ... read more

Hi all A wonderful trip over T-pass and down the Mantanuska Valley. Camped at the base of Mantanuska Glacier. BURN BAN.. first night without a cozy fire. T’s warm though. Anchorage was having it’s Spring Fling type celebration today. Artisans, performers, eats. Raeann and I both purchased some work by a Maui born women Mary Morrieria (?SP) who works magic in blue and purple shades. I’ll need to free up some wall space at home! Anchorage is only UrbaignX2, so the city drives and navigates pretty easily. Tonight Julia Arrives. Can’t wait to see her and show he some of this wonderful, hugomongous state. Plans for planes in Denali, camping and seeing some NPS friends. Hope you are well. Get out and enjoy some nature this next week…we sure will be. Peace Scott ... read more

This blog is all about WILDLIFE!!!! between the three of us we took about 600 photos on the trip (thank god for digital cameras) but don't worry we couldn't fit them all ..... so only up loaded the good ones! Jan (Mel's mum) came over to visit and the next day we headed up to Anchorage in Alaska. The flight left Vancouver in the evening and we didn't get to Anchorage till after midnight, flying in over the snow and mountains which surrounded the city was a fabulous introduction to the "Land of the Midnight Sun!" as it truly was still light when we arrived. We picked up a hire care and headed to our hotel to crash! The next day we headed south to Seward (a small fishing village) where we took a 6 hour ... read more
