Forget injuries, never forget kindnesses.---------Confucius WE ARE HEADING TO YELLOWSTONE FOR A WEEK THEN TO GRAND TETONS FOR 4 DAYS -------- THEN HOME TO GET READY FOR THE NEXT TRIP MAUREEN AND BOB July 14, 2005, Thursday. After a full day of rain yesterday, Thursday began with glimmers of sunshine and got our hopes up for the 8 hour Kenai Fjord National Park Cruise. However arriving at the pier, the staff informed us the weather was very unsettled out in the Alaskan Gulf. Did we want to continue with the trip? And, if the weather got worse the boat would be forced to return early. Hey life is a gamble and this is our window of opportunity, so of course, we went. Kenai gives us a glimpse back to when ice covered much of North ... read more

We’re all proud of making little mistakes. It gives us the feeling we don’t make any big ones.-----------Andy Rooney July 12, 2005, Tuesday. We arrived in Seward and did some walking in the downtown, but the weather was not cooperative, rainy and cool. The Alaska Sealife Center sound good, indoors. Well it was great! It is an educational center on sealife. We observed harbor seals and stellar sea lions swimming about. The ranger’s talk on seals was quite informative. The seals in Seward are disappearing….why? That is the reason for research. We spent most of the afternoon at the sealife center and then moved on to Stony Creek Campground. Nice and clean. Time to do laundry. July 13, 2005, Wednesday. Stopped at the beauty shop and had the nicest young man fix my hair. Most ... read more

Four things come not back: the spoken word, the spent arrow, the past, the neglected opportunity.----------Omar Ibn Al-Halif July 10, 2005, Sunday. It is a beautiful sunny day and we are off to Anchorage to explore. Anchorage is Alaska’s largest city. The old town is an interesting walk and soon we found the market center. Walking around the booths, of course we purchased some trinkets and gifts. It is really quite a large market area complete with music. After a stop at the ulu store for some more purchases, we set out to find a bike rental. The Coastal Trail, a bike/hike paved surface, follows the coastline along the mud flats. Lots of birds, ducks, etc, we stopped at Earthquake Park. A memorial to the Good Friday earthquake of March 27, 1964, the most powerful ... read more

As we are heading off to the internet café to post this entry we received news of the terrible bombings in London. This is really disturbing news. We hope that you and all your loved ones are safe and unhurt. We also hear that the Olympics has been awarded to London, well done on that! Picking off from where we last left you, we met Carl’s parents in Anchorage, they had been to see the big trees in Yosemite California. The next morning we started with a good breakfast at Gwenie’s Great Alaskan Restaurant where they serve Reindeer sausage, grits, biscuits and coffee comes by the thermos. We were then all picked up by Great Alaskan Holidays in their red van to go and get what would be our mobile home for the next 12 days. Before ... read more

You can never step into the same river twice, for new waters are always flowing on to you.----------Heraclitus. July 7, 2005, Thursday. This is a driving day, and our first connect spot was Haines Junction, then on to Kluane. Again we got stuck on a dirt road at Destruction Bay. The water is a magnificent blue/green color, it has something to do with the crushed shells and the way the colors are absorbed by the sun, but it is beautiful. We took a couple of pictures as we waited for the “pilot car” to lead us through the construction area. Destruction Bay is one of several towns that grew out of the building of the Alaska Highway. It earned it name when a storm destroyed buildings and materials here. The Kluane Museum of Natural History ... read more

Remember that happiness is a way of travel - not a destination. Roy M. Goodman If you are interested We up date the entry with the bear in Deneli July 6, 2005, Wednesday. We finally got up, in the rain, at 5:30 6:00 AM. Had some breakfast, packed up wet gear and began hiking out. The trail has, what the Ranger described as, a boardwalk, but it is actually two planks nailed on a support over swampy areas. Just one night of heavy rain and the growth that occurred was astounding. The Alaskan vegetation is like mother-nature on steroids. Our hike out, was faster than our hike in. It was good to see our vehicle still sitting there safe and sound. We drove into Skagway to pick up a few things before starting our drive ... read more

Kindness is more important then wisdom, and the recognition of this is the beginning of wisdom. ----Theorode Isaac Rubin July 5, 2005, Tuesday. We traveled by train this morning on the White Pass and Yukon Route to the summit. Today is the sunniest, brightest day since we have been in Alaska. The scenery along the trip was spectacular. The climb was about 3,000 feet and of course, we started at sea level. I never tire of looking at the mountains, waterfalls, and pine trees. It is hard to imagine the prospectors slogging along this steep, narrow trail with horses and the hopes of becoming RICH! Back at the station, we had some lunch and began the second part of our day. With permit in hand and our backpacks ready, we drove to the trailhead for the ... read more

Worry is a waste of the imagination.___Bob Tait July 4, 2005, Monday. Skagway is where we begin the third leg of our journey, the Road Trip North. No more ferry rides, we begin driving and driving and….but, first let’s see Skagway. By way of background regarding Skagway, the headlines read “Gold! Gold! Gold!” on July 17, 1897 broadcasting the new of the discovery of gold in the Canadian Klondike. Tens of thousands of gold crazed men and women steamed up the Inside Passage waterway and arrived in Skagway to begin the overland trek to the Klondike. Six hundred miles of treacherous and dangerous trails and waterways lay before them. Some prospectors chose the shorter, but steeper Chilkoot Trail, which began in Dyea. Each person was required to carry A TON of supplies up the “Golden ... read more

African Proverb Every morning in Africa, a gazelle wakes up. It knows it must run faster than the fastest lion or it will be killed. Every morning in Africa a lion wakes up. It knows it must outrun the slowest gazelle or it will starve to death. It doesn’t matter whether you are a lion or a gazelle. When the sun comes up, you better start running. July 1, 2, & 3 2005, Friday. This was an early get-up, 4am. The ferry leaves at 7am but we need to check in and be in line 2 hrs prior. So we made breakfast in the ferry line, nice to have our home with us, and kept falling asleep waiting for the boat to depart. We were on the high speed Fairhaven again and arrived in Haines ... read more

People travel to wonder at the height of the mountains, at the huge waves of the sea, at the long course of the rivers, at the vast compass of the ocean, at the circular motion of the stars, and yet they pass by themselves without wondering.-St Augustine LINKS Name TRAVEL TIPS June 28, 2005, Tuesday This blog is out of sequence.
