We loaded up the car and camper and sailed from Wrangell to Juneau on the M/V Taku last night. Now we are camping at Mendenhall Lake Campground, which is about 14 miles from downtown Juneau. We are very near the shore of Mendenhall Lake with views of the Mendenhall Glacier and flanked by the Mendenhall River. Because we had so much fun at Mendenhall Lake, we never made the drive into Juneau. Glaciers hold a special place in my heart, since I recall fond memories of family camping trips to Glacier National Park in Montanta. My father graduated from the University of Minnesota as a Chemical Engineer with a minor in Geology. He loved rocks and always carried a canvas bag for collection along with his pic axe. Much of what my father taught us went ... read more

We arrived in Juneau at 2:00 PM on Wednesday. The city of 30,000 people is a small, compact town with a single bridge that connects Douglas Island. The downtown area is walking distance from the docks. Our time in Juneau was split between two major sight-seeing destinations, a glacier and a bar. Lani and I signed on to tour the Mendenhal Glacier and Juneau’s salmon hatchery. The Mendenhal Glacier is roughly 20 minutes down the road from downtown. We learned that Alaska’s great ice fields are constantly shifting with all glaciers either receding or expanding as the ice moves. Mendenhal is one of the receding glaciers. We saw photos of the glacier in the 80s as compared to today. The changes have been significant and you can see the results in the landscape of the hillsides. ... read more

Tuesday May 31st, Juneau Alaska Bright sunshine on the warm side Got up real early to meet the shuttle driver at 7:00, who would drive us about 15 minutes into the city of Juneau. We needed to catch the afternoon ferry back to Haines and had only the morning to see the sights of Juneau. It turned out that a morning was plenty of time. We started from the visitor’s center where our driver left us off, and armed with a map and guide, walked a couple blocks along the harbor toward the main streets. Came to the cruise ship dock and noted three huge ones in port. The harbor sits on a fairly narrow estuary behind an island. Juneau started as a gold mining camp and the mine once went from the mountains down to ... read more

So, Juneau’s awesome! The weather was a little shitty in the morning – spitting rain and overcast, but by 10am the rain stopped. Good timing because at 10:30 we headed out on our excursion! We took the bus up to Mendenhall Glacier – our driver was fun, full of jokes and stuff. We had 1.5hrs at the Glacier which really wasn’t enough… I easily could’ve spent another couple hours there to hike around the trails. (Even if there was a sign indicating “possibly bear encounters”, I was game) I love glaciers, I really do. The colours are just amazing, and the patterns within the ice are mesmerizing. A got a bunch of photos of the ice flows in the lake at the bottom of the glacier, and then of course a ton more photos of the ... read more

Ok, so I am submitting this today, but my trip my trip was last year. I went on a small boat eco-tour of the southeast part of Alaska from Sitka to Juneau and was blown away. I'd know people that had taken cruises to Alaska - you know, those floating Vegas-styled cities that don't let you really get close to the action. And when I say "action," I mean going right up tiny rivers to pristine places seem untouched by the modern world. What was just as amazing is that the company I traveled with, The Boat Company (www.theboatcompany.org) has been going to these places for years and years (30 I think), and yet I didn't find one candy wrapper, sludge marks on thew beach from ship oil, or any other human debris. So what is ... read more

I can't believe that my trip is almost at an end. It has been such a blast here in Juneau! I got to do so much more than I thought I would and even experienced some new things. After my last update, I went camping with Les, Louie, and Sara. On Monday morning, we headed off to Douglas and hiked up to the Dan Moller cabin which was about a 2.5 mile "more difficult" hike from Blueberry Hill that has an 1800 feet elevation gain. It was another gorgeous sunny day with some amazing views of downtown. I was a little nervous since Michigan has no hills and I haven't been hiking in a long time, but my time at the gym swimming really paid off as we took to the trail around 1 or so. ... read more

Today I started my first travel blog. Which may become more of a journal entry more than a travel blog as I am not traveling to much here in my college years!I am living in Juneau Alaska attending University of Alaska Southeast. In three semesters from now I will be graduated with my Bachelors in Marine Biology with a minor in Art. From there who knows where I will go. I have been thinking lately about going to grad school. Although I am really ready for a break from school and ready to start a new job in a new town and settle down for a bit. I sure love Juneau, but I feel a little trapped and in need of getting out and starting something new. This last week has been great, visiting with friends, ... read more

I've been in Juneau for about three days now and so much has happened that I decided to split my spring break trip into two blogs. Well the last time I wrote, I was in the Detroit airport just getting ready to take off. During the whole trip out here, I kept thinking about my committee meeting and the sturgeon and what I was going to do to just make everything work. But a nice lady next to me kind of cheered me up as she told me all about how her little boy loves sharks and wants to be a marine biologist and if I could recommend any good books. I told her all about Ray Troll :) And then when we were flying down into Seattle, I looked out the window, saw the mountains, ... read more

Galen had organized this fun trip to Juneau just five months into our dating. We wanted to do something different with the little time we had and therefore opted to do dog sledding through TEMSCO helicopters. We were flown by a helicopter to Mendenhall Glacier and the view on the way to the glacier was spectacular with deep blue crevasses and glacier carved peaks. This was my first time landing on a glacier and I was totally excited. We were given time to bond with the Alaskan husky dogs and to have a look at the dogsled camp on the glacier. The sled was pulled by a set of 14 to 16 husky dogs and one lead husky dog. They go at about 10 miles per hour but when you are on the sled it feels ... read more

Just a quick practice message to all my friends and family. I just returned from the Bald Eagle Festival in Haines, Alaska. Had my first experience sleeping in a yert, with a view of the river valley below and soaring eagles waking me in the mornings. One of the bald eagles I have been working with was released during this event. She took a swim, but made it to shore and succeeded in stealing a salmon from a full grown eagle, so I guess she will be fine. I look forward to sharing our adventures in Australia this winter. Cheers, Liz... read more
