Just a quick practice message to all my friends and family. I just returned from the Bald Eagle Festival in Haines, Alaska. Had my first experience sleeping in a yert, with a view of the river valley below and soaring eagles waking me in the mornings. One of the bald eagles I have been working with was released during this event. She took a swim, but made it to shore and succeeded in stealing a salmon from a full grown eagle, so I guess she will be fine. I look forward to sharing our adventures in Australia this winter. Cheers, Liz... read more

Glaciers, Whales Oh My!!! What a splended day we had. The weather was perfect for viewing Juneau Alaska. The locals were super excited because this was the best weather that they had seen in a while, It was a blazing 80degs outside perfect day for shooting. I only took 561 images today. We spotted hump back whales and visited a nearby glacier ( I forget the name, sorry ) Our tour ended up at a wonderful private club along the shore where we had a great grilled salmon lunch. We later returned back to the ship and set off twoards Ketchikan Alaska, I sat on the balcony and watched what seemed like hundreds of hump back whales off in the distance until the sun went down... read more

Yesterday was especially fun—the weather was great—no rain and a bit warmer. We started the day with a hike up “Montana Creek”, which is really close to where were staying. It was a really well kept up trail - almost gravel for quite aways with a good size creek—really more of a river to our right. There were lots of berries to eat along the way - raspberries and salmon berries. We had brought along our geo cache “travel cache” thing to leave - Juli and the boys found it in Winter Park and it said it wanted to travel the world so this was as good of a jump off spot as we could think of. We couldn’t, however, find the cache box, so will likely take to Denali or Kenai. After looking for about ... read more

Dax, Jaden, Juli, Brian and Cathy and I hiked the West Mendenhall Glacier trail today, trying to get to the actual glacier. I was really cool - a very jungle type hike that the last half had rock climbing and other interesting items to get past. Lots of streams and great views. The Glacier itself was cool to see—rivers underneath it while it melted above our heads. We have great pics of going inside the ice caves. Really enjoyed hanging with Brian and Cathy, and the hike is one of the more interesting ones we ever do. Blaze stayed with my parents who took him on a hike around the lake they are staying on. He could use the break and it would have been a tough hike for him. We are all going to dinner ... read more

Day Four, today we went on a huge hike to a glacier called Mentendhal Glacier. It was a really long hike. Four hours long. When we reached the glacier, we saw ice caves on the edge of the glacier. First, we made sure it was safe to go in them. Then, we got to go in them. They were so cool that I can’t even tell you about them. It was like it was raining, there was so much water dripping off the roof of the ice cave. Also on the way there, we passed many water falls. All in all, the four hour hike to the glacier was a lot a fun!... read more

Last few Days (July 15, 16) Well, we have a teenage now and Jaden is excited. He decided to have all the family to our place and order pizza, salad and make smores at the firepit. What a great night it was too. Previous to that we hiked a trail near the Mendenhall creek - a very rain forest, green trail. We went to the Salmon Hatchery which was really informative. I have never seen so many salmon in my life; swimming up the 450’ ladder to return “home” to lay eggs. The “imprinting” that salmon do is very interesting. Could be a research paper for someone in school - hint, hint. I have never seen as many eagles; bald, juvenile, and unknown as I have seen up here. Eagles are as abundant as the everyday ... read more

Dad Blog Yesterday was a big day on a boat to Tracy Arm. We had hoped to see whales on the way but didn’t. the Inlet up Tracy Arm was really cool—huge waterfalls every few hundred feet fed down from the canyons. The canyons and everything around here is really steep as its all carved from the Fjords and Glaciers cutting through the mountains. We stopped at one spot where the walls were at least 2000 of more feet straight up. At the Glacier itself, there were 850 seals who had either been born recently or were those that gave birth. They go to the glacier area to get out of the moving sea for birth, and will return to the open sea in time. It was much better weather—cool still but no rain. The night ... read more

Can you say wet? Cold? Did I mention rain? Green, green and big mountains with water falling off and down. We arrived in rain, cold, cloudy (awesome clouds everywhere) and about 52 degrees. I have on four shirts (seriously) and a rain jacket. I am finally warming up. We met the cousins and relations; Brian, Scott, Kathryn, Jessie and Phebie and hiked/viewed Mendenhall Glacier. Wow, that was the coolest! White and blue massive ice, with waterfalls, and silty looking water. Just beautiful - the best it can get. We will try and go back when it is not raining and freezing cold to explore futher on the other side. FYI: Blaze and Dax discovered a bat in the laundry room. He (the bat) is famous in our book as we took many pictures of him clinging ... read more
