Dear Friends, A few weeks ago I took my grandson to see the IMAX movie about Lewis and Clarks's adventure to find a westward passage to the ocean. I had seen it last year in St. Louis with my older grandkids. I had seen it many years ago as a Nat'l Geographic special. I think it is a great movie as it depicts the horrible conditions that they and their men and Sacagewea and her baby went through. Go see it if you have a chance or order it on Netflix. I thought of this as I flew over the snow capped peaks of the Rockies. I looked down on these massive mountains and thought of the anguish and frustration L&C must have felt. It must have been disheartening and discouraging but what character and strength ... read more

I work at Glacier Gardens Rainforest Adventure. Ever heard of it? If not, check it out at: http://www.glaciergardens.com/T_webcam.htm. That's the link to the Bald Eagle Cam where our "Papa Courage" and "Mother Freedom" eagles have been nesting for a few years and have one baby eaglet for the year that we've been keeping tabs on for over a month now. Why only the one? Well...I'm not sure if you want to know, but bald eagles actually push two out and only keep the one. Apparently it just takes too much energy to keep the three. A sad but honest reality for these giant raptors in Southeast Alaska. Well this summer (work wise) has been much different from last. You may know that last summer was occupied with helicopters, days out on a concrete ramp, and a ... read more

Hello folks, Acutally, I'm still sweltering in hot and steamy Memphis (today was a cooler 93 degrees!). But next week I will be in Juneau, Petersburg, and Sitka, Alaska. So this is a 'heads up' to all of you on my blog list. First, if you DO NOT want to receive blogs, them please e-mail me and I will take your name off the list. Second, if you DO want to get the blogs you have to be sure and add the following to your address book: webmaster@travelblog.org Val and I are doing the Alaska Ferry system from Juneau down to Prince Rupert, British Columbia. From Prince Rupert we fly to Vancouver for 3 days. It should be fun to see where the Olympics were held last winter. Val leaves for New Orleans on the 20th ... read more

Don't have a lot of time for this update, but I was so excited to hear that my sound was fixed that I had to post something!! John, our sound tech, is a miracle worker and hooked me up so that I can actually hear my voice coming through the monitors!!!! My voice is saved! Tonight's show is You've Got A Friend, which is all my Carole King and James Taylor songs rolled into an hour show. However, since we don't disembark till 9pm tonight, I'm afraid that only a few people will show up. In my experience, the longer we are in port, the more tired the passengers get, thus sending them to bed earlier. No worries though. I have met about 6-8 people who have been to both my shows so far, and I'd ... read more

Besides the past three days, we have had awesome weather here in Juneau this summer. It has definitely been an active one for me working 6 days a week and trying to get out on my one day off. It wears me out and makes the time go by quick, but it has also helped me make the most of this -- my last summer here in Juneau. There have been several ups and downs and difficulties, but in the end, it's all totally worth it and I'm still pretty happy. The past couple weeks have gone by quickly and can't believe that it has been a whole month since graduation. It has been busy with my trip to Fairbanks for the EPSCoR conference, working at Glacier Gardens Rainforest Adventure, hanging out with my friends, and ... read more

Last week I was able to take one of my favourite types of tours but the Alaskan version when I went snorkeling. I’ve had one other favourite on my must-do list while up here in the north - zip lining. I did some research and found a company that was willing to take a group of crew members and offered us a great deal. I got a group of friends together and today we were off. Today was another wet and cold day. Definitely not ideal zip lining weather. But we sucked it up - and ultimately lucked out because the rain stopped just in time for our tour. The ship is docked in Juneau today. We took a small motorboat across the channel to Douglas Island. We were suited up, then driven up the mountain ... read more

After eight and half months onboard - it is officially my final cruise! Every cruise we have a scenic cruising day where we’re still on the ship but we sail into an Alaskan fjord and up to a glacier. Though our itinerary has said all along that we’d be sailing in Tracy Arm, each week we’ve been in Ellicott Arm. Ellicott is wider and there’s been less ice there so our captain has felt it’s been safer going there. Every week the scenic cruising has been beautiful, but all of the crew have been very curious to see the neighbouring fjord that has been alluding us. Well this week, I lucked out because today we cruised Tracy Arm - just in time seeing as it’s my last scenic cruising day. Wow. Again, Ellicott Arm is beautiful. ... read more

The city of Juneau is surrounded by mountains. Right alongside the cruise ship pier, Mount Roberts rises above. A tramway runs up to the peak of Mount Roberts and today I was eager to get up to the top to see what there was to see. A couple of the girls went with me early off the ship and to the tramway building. We got our tickets and were whisked up the mountainside to the top. We went to the nature centre right at the top to get some more information. We knew that there were nature walks and hikes around the mountain but didn’t really know what we should and could tackle. It’s still early in the season so there’s snow on the mountaintops; but it is also spring and so wildlife, including bears, are ... read more

Today we’re back in Juneau and I was on a mission to start seeing what there is to see in the area. I rented a car and took two friends along for the ride. The downfall of our day was we discovered that not only was it cold, but it was raining. Having the car meant we got from place to place nice and dry, but it made the outdoors bone chilling. Still, we headed out. Our first destination was the Mendenhall Glacier, the most visited glacier in Alaska mainly because it is so accessible. It was only about a 20 minute drive from the cruise ship dock. We arrived just before all the tour buses too which made it a bit less hectic there. We walked along the short pathway to the lookout spots across ... read more

Normally for myself and other crew who work on ships, days at sea are not exciting. They mean long and tiring days of work. But ever since I learned I’d be working on the Spirit and cruising Alaska, I’ve been looking forward to our scenic cruising days. My teen club is at the top of the ship at the front and one side is all windows. I normally keep the curtains closed because people walk outside on the deck and stare into the windows; it makes me feel like me and teens are animals at the zoo. But the whole time I’ve been here, I’ve been waiting to have those curtains wide open to see the Alaskan scenery go by. Today was our first official scenic cruising day. Our itinerary had us scheduled to cruise Tracy ... read more
