Two days ago we set sail out of Vancouver on our first Alaskan cruise of the season. It has been constantly beautiful ever since! When we left Vancouver, we sailed North between Vancouver Island and the mainland of British Columbia. It was gorgeous. Then yesterday, we were sailing through the Inside Passage. Also gorgeous. But today, we officially arrived in Alaska! Just before noon, we arrived in Juneau. I was one of many crew members out front on the crew deck, eager to see what there was so see. It’s so pretty here. Mountains on every side and the city of Juneau nestled at the bottom of a couple. I didn’t have any big plans for today. In fact, my only real plan was to gather information for future cruises so I could make great plans! ... read more

It is a beautiful sunny day here in Juneau, Alaska and I can't believe I haven't written in over two weeks. Has it really been that long? Well I guess it's safe to say that a lot has happened lately. Some major ups and downs, but nothing too life altering! This week has gone surprisingly well...a little better than last week. Right now it is sunny, gorgeous, and I have lots to write about. First off, the title. What's up with it? Well, today was the UAS Protest against the 15% tuition increase next year. It is actually going to be a 22% increase over the next two years, but nevertheless, I joined the students out in the courtyard (mostly to skip class and be outside), carried a sign with Melissa in tow, and marched across ... read more

It is Thursday, the week is almost over which makes me pretty happy. It's gone by kind of surprisingly quick though. And here I am, back In Erica Hill's class (aka the room without cell service) and in order to stay awake, I am typing up a blog. SO MUCH has happened in the past week in a half. Hmm...in a nutshell: snails...friends...ice...cabin...wolf tracks...job interview...more snails...gunnel...MSU Graduate school acceptance...didn't get the job...and some awesome late nights. Yupp that is it in a nutshell! But since we all know that I am a girl of a ridiculous amount of words to describe little things, I'm going to fill in the gaps a bit. First off, I went snailing and found quite an abundance of Calliostoma. Well then it was spring break and it took ALL OF MY ... read more

Wow, it's the end of February? When did that happen? Well since it has been some time since I have posted, I decided to share a few pictures I recently took during my Marine Ecology Lab. There is nothing like sunshine, low tide, intertidal creatures, and some whales to make you happy! How is life with me? Well...I can't complain. Life has been BUSY though. With my GIS class this past month, there have just been many late nights of homework and many LONG days of work. But luckily, I have some good friends around that have helped me unwind on the weekends and have been making this semester pretty good. Of course, I have yet to take photos of them really, but soon!! With spring break fastly approaching and midterms coming up, hopefully things will ... read more

It's a Friday here in Juneau and I of course am procrastinating and not doing my homework. I've always hated doing homework on Fridays. And since my primers for my DNA research have not come in yet, I am not in the lab, spending my afternoon with a guy who seems like he's high all of the time. A fact which I am kind of thankful for. Instead, I am at home, catching up on a Grey's Anatomy episode (I've missed two already -- how did that happen?!?) and being stood up on my phone interview with our Canadian contact for our DNA project. She probably forgot -- this would not be the first time. But I am thankful that she is still interested as we are acquiring her sample data, mixing it with ours, and ... read more

Well, my past couple of weeks back here stateside have been excitingas I have engaged in many new firsts and am way excited for what else is to come. One of the best new ones was today -- my first time at Eaglecrest. I know, I know, it seems like a sin living in Juneau for almost five years now and never having gone to Eaglecrest. So today, I made the early morning expedition with Les and my two roommates - Sara and Amy. Of course we all were a little sleepy after not having the best dreams from watching a ridiculously stupid but creepy movie called The Orphan, but we made it up to the mountain around 9am. It was a beautiful morning as we got my gear and I went to my lesson while ... read more

It is 2010. Can you believe it?!? I find it pretty hard to believe at times. And yet it felt very exciting last night as I spent my first ever new years here in Juneau, Alaska. I've been back here for about two days, and things have been going pretty well so far. This is actually my first blog entry from the states since last August and so much has happened since then! When I left here, I was a total wreck, freaking out about a lot of things. But now, I'm this girl, this lucky international traveler. I sit in the silence and I wonder what's going to happen but with calm, even breath and relaxed nerves. I think this calm perspective of mine led to what was the greatest Christmas vacation I have ever ... read more

Alan headed to the Observation Lounge at 7 this morning to make sure that we had ringside seats for url=http://myitchytravelfeet.com/2009/09/09/cruising-vancouver-to-singapore-regent-seven-seas-mariner/ Mariner's cruise up Tracy Arm, one of Alaska’s scenic fjords. I met him about thirty minutes later for our coffee with a view. As the ship sailed beside the sheer granite cliffs of the narrow fjord, lecturer, Terry Breen, provided the commentary. But, environmental regulations applying to Tracy Arm meant that her remarks could not be broadcast on the outside decks of the ship. So, the only way to hear Terry was to be in the Observation Lounge. You can imagine that our coffee came with quite a crowd, along with the spectacular view. Our good weather luck allowed Mariner to cruise 18 miles up Tracy Arm, much farther than ships are usually able to maneuver. ... read more

As I predicted, I slept through our port visit at Ketchikan. Actually I didn’t SLEEP through it; I just stayed in bed. Docking in port and numerous announcements over the P.A. made sure that I wasn’t going to sleep. Back at sea, I woke up just before sunrise and saw partly cloudy skies. I dressed quickly and ran out on deck to get a few sunrise photos and then went to the cafeteria for some really good biscuits and gravy. Late morning we arrived in Wrangell, a very small Alaskan town that, like many others, cannot be reached by road. You can only get here by ferry or plane. We had about 90 minutes in port, so I walked into town for a short visit. I had a nice conversation with a lady in a gift ... read more

Yesterday we went to Juneau. It was a cold rainy day, but we all took in some great sights. Kay & I took the tram to the top of Mt. Roberts & then hiked the Alpine Loop at the top of the mountain. What a view. In the visitor center, there was a lady selling cookbooks commemorating the 50th anniversary of statehood for Alaska. It is hard to believe but I can still remember when there were only 48 states! We then went back down the tram & had lunch in town at the Red Dog Saloon. Good food & an interesting environment (They had Wyatt Earp's pistol on display & I got a picture. See the picture & story.) We then did a little shopping & went back to the ship to get ready for ... read more
