Hi Everyone! Well, here it is...I'm finally graduated and off travelling the world! As you can tell, I'm in Juneau, Alaska right now on shore leave from the Golden Princess where I'm working as Youth Security. When I am working, my job involves me walking around the ship for about 8 hours occasionally tellling teenagers that they can't sit on the stairs or jump in the pool, or drink/ go into the nightclub. Basically I'm an RA on a cruise ship! Although the job's not all bad; since there really aren't a lot of kids on the boat I get to spend a lot of time talking to the other crew members when I go past where they're working. Also, since I'm usually working during the shows, I might pop my head in and catch a ... read more

Wednesday 28th May Glacier Bay Up at 5am, bright day, sun trying to break though the mist. Lovely breakfast - eggs, bacon, hotcakes and toast. Dropped off at the warf, departed on the Fairweather ll catamaran at 7.30am. The mist lifted, what a day, so sunny, out on deck we needed jackets and hats due to the wind chill. Had a wonderful Park Ranger (Adriana) who was extremely knowledgeable. We saw so much, black bear, grizzly bear grazing on the hill side eating dandilions, goats, otter, whales and a huge wolf. They gave us an awful wrap for lunch, (it happens), then we went up the west arm of the bay to view a couple of glaciers, including the Marion (sp). Which was outstanding, we manouvered though the ice to stay in front of the glacier ... read more

We're new bloggernauts - playing around a bit here. Think we might communicate via travelblog from Thailand. I'm uploading pics of our 10 week roadtrip from south Texas to southeast Alaska during summer 2006 for starters. We backpacked across the gamut of Rocky Mountain national parks. Highlights included a 40 mile backcountry hike in Banff, and getting dropped by floatplane off Admiralty Island to kayak into Pack Creek brown bear observatory. So, I'll sign off with an excerpt from natural history writer Dave Quammen's "Monster of God" (hopefully, the relevance is apparent) . . . "Six billion humans currently weigh upon the planet. According to the most authoritative projection now available (from the United Nations Population Division), five billion more may be added within 150 years. With every additional child comes additional pressure on the productivity ... read more

We woke this morning to find the ship berthed here in Juneau, the capital of Alaska. The pop is 30,000 without cruise ships (4 in here today). The ships berth right close to town just as they do in Ketchikan. The main town difference here, is that Juneau is larger, looks more prosperous, has the usual tourist shops which seem to account for most of the city shops. Outside the immediate town limits is the suburbs that have the more usual shops and services. We took a ride on the Skyway Tram to the top of Mount Roberts, which offered a very scenic view looking back down over the harbour and the city. We saw our first up close bald eagle up there; she was in an aviary after being rescued after being shot. Otherwise, there ... read more

was the punch line of a joke our morning guide, Ron told us on our way back from the Dog Sled Summer Camp. He was a funny, older man who seemed to love his job. I could see why, Juneau, a pretty, colorful city and the capital of Alaska is settled at the base of a mountain, conveniently called Mount Juneau. There is also an island; Douglas, across from Juneau. It is only accessible by aircraft or boat and has more vehicles than people! Did Jun neau that? haha Our morning started at 4:05am. That's when the light started coming through between the opening of the curtains I had purposely left open so as not to miss anything. (scenery, wildlife, etc) I went to the balcony to see snow capped mountains took a couple pictures then ... read more

Hey everyone. So classes are finally over for the semester and even though my BioChem grade wasn't as good as I wanted, I'm glad I'm finally done with chemistry...forever!! :) Well, at least for a little while. The weekend after finals, I got the opportunity to go out on a wildlife cruise sponsored by the audobon society. We saw some amazing wildlife including eagles, oyster-catchers, sea lions, humpback whales, and a lot of other species of birds that I'm not that familiar with. When we got out to Berner's Bay, we were in for a real treat as the sea lions started jumping out of the water and then the humpbacks started breaching. It was an amazing experience and a great way to spend the weekend before the tourists take over Juneau! Then yesterday, Ai and ... read more

It has now been sunny and beautiful in Juneau, Alaska for 7 days. Yes, you heard me right...7 days!! I'm not sure I've even seen Juneau this beautiful (and warm already -- it was 55 degrees outside) for so many straight days in the spring for the past three years that I have been here. With the warm weather and the sun, the inhabitants of Juneau have officially come out of hiding, are frequently visiting every possible beach or lookout spot towards the end of the road, and just enjoying the beautiful orb that has graced us with its presence (and right before the crazy camera-obsessed tourists come!!). It's interesting to note too that the sun came at just the right time when the power control towers got knocked out by an avalanche (yes, you heard ... read more

Now everyone knows that the weather in the Alaskan Southeast can be kind of blah! But for three days, we were finally blessed with some much needed sunshine as people broke out of their homes, raced to the beaches (rocky and muddy and some still covered in snow) with their dogs, and enjoyed being outside even though the temperature only reached a high of 48. We even got to see the Northern Lights one night (faintly)!! I managed to snap a few pictures before the sun sadly went away. They are from Echo Cove, Eagle Beach, and Auke Bay!!... read more

Wow, I can't believe how long it has been since I have updated my travelblog. Although I haven't done a whole lot of extensive traveling lately, there has definately been a lot of news to add to my blog. Life has been...crazy since last September. With roommate drama, school drama (somehow I got academically dropped after going to North Carolina), and some family sadness, I am back to keep updating my blog because this coming summer is going to be full of traveling!! I have still been in Juneau, Alaska since last August though after my LONG roadtrip through Canada. Juneau is still one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen. I still need to learn though...Alaska equals camera. There have been some early mornings over the past couple weeks that I've seen gorgeous ... read more
