Last night we went for a drive up to the Denali Grande Lodge. It is set high up on the side of the mountain overlooking Denali Park. It was a hairy ride up the mountain but so worth it. The views below we're fantastic. Then we were off to the Alaska Cabin Night Theatre. Was not sure what to expect as we had read mixed reviews. Pleasantly surprised though - it was a great night. Dinner was served family style at a long table with 12 people sitting around. Alaskan style dinner - salad, biscuits, corn, beans, ribs, salmon and potatoes. Plenty of goof for everyone. Iced water, sweet tea and coffee also provided on table. After dinner there was a 45 minute show about the real Alaskans - also known as Sourdoughs. It was a ... read more

Day 14 Cont. Tuesday July 30 We finished our cleaning by 5:00 just in time for the bus for dinner. We went to the Alaska Salmon Bake, an outdoor all you can eat buffet. We ate delicious salmon, halibut and prime rib with all the sides at picnic tables. We walked around the little village and looked in the shops until the show at the Palace Theatre. A wonderful musical performance telling the story of the beginning of Fairbanks. Day 15 - Wednesday July 31 The next morning we boarded the bus again for a cruise on the Riverboat Discovery down the Chena River. Before boarding the boat we went into a room that was -40 degrees. Brrrr. The three hour cruise is run by a family in Fairbanks and the captain is the forth generation, ... read more

Driving from town to town and visiting the wilderness in Alaska has been good. We have stopped at Anchorage, Talkettan, De Nali and Fairbanks. Anchorage is the biggest town with a population in excess of 150,000- the other towns are much smaller though swell up during the summer tourist season. The highlight of the trip in Alaska has been the wilderness tour of De Nali national park - some 6 million acres of wilderness - we saw moose, brown bear, golden eagle and caribou. We were also some of the lucky few to see the peaks of Mount McKinley, the highest mountain in North America at 20,320 feet. Today we went on a river boat tour of the Chekna river in Fairbanks and visited an old automobile museum- we are flying out tomorrow back to Vancouver ... read more

8.30 Abfahrt.

Thank you Steven!! I've been bugging my travel companions to write a guest blog since we started this trip. Finally someone took the plunge. And speaking of plunges, I'll add more on our white water rafting adventure later but I need to get back to the chronological sequencing of our travels. Last I wrote we were just getting to Fairbanks. Fairbanks was an interesting place...not much to look at as you drive into the city but I think I got to feel some of the charm of the place, at least in the summer. Our hotel was in downtown and near a pretty river walk and an excellent Visitor's Center. We started our day in Fairbanks with that walk and exploring the Visiter's Center. It had a few good exhibits and we saw the film, 40 ... read more

Geo: 64.8452, -147.722 It was grey and overcast as we packed up the bike for the ride from Tok to Fairbanks. As a light rain began, we decided to have breakfast down the road at Fast Eddy's before making a decision on wearing rain gear for the ride. Fortunately, by the time we finished eating the rain had stopped and the skies in the west looked promising. So, we took off, sans raingear, relying on our so-called waterproof liners to handle any precipitation we might encounter. Hwy 2 was in good shape, heading straight west along the Tanana River, all the way to Fairbanks. It was great to be able to cruise along at normal speeds, in sharp contrast to our ride across the Top of the World Highway the previous day. The cloudy weather continued ... read more

Spent the morning on a Riverboat Cruise. It was very interesting and had a bush pilot land on the water right beside the boat then stopped at Susan Bucher and Dave Monson kennels (she won the Iditarod 3 times in a row and then missed a year and won it the next year). She passed away in 2006 from leukemia. Then off to a replica of a village. All very interesting. Rained all day so off to Chena Hot Springs after lunch. I have to say I think we got spoiled at Liard Hot Springs.... read more

Well we survived the Top of the World Highway whew what a road. Did some gold panning in Chicken and found some gold in my Mom's gold pan (thanks MOM). Cross the border at the most northern US border crossing. Travelled onto Tok and then to Delta Junction (the official mile 0 of the Alaska Highway). Relaxed there and then had an easy day to Fairbanks, only a couple of hours of driving. Lots of forest fires here and saw one that was right beside the highway. Has been really hot and dry up here but since we have arrived it has rained a few times a day. Had a downpour yesterday (July 8th). Enjoying ourselves and getting a chance to relax here (we are here for 4 days). Lots of the same people travelling the ... read more

The day started out early with us up at 7:00 and leaving the RV park at 8:30. We headed downtown to the local farmer's market. We had heard the farmer's market had great produce and lots of locally made crafts and goods. The locals were right and it was just as they said. Joyce and I even were able to both get a 20 min. chair massage. Boy did we both need that. After we did our fair share of shopping at the market we were off to the University of Alaska Museum of the North. As you can see from the pictures I post, it was a very educational place. Around 12:30 we went off the university campus and headed towards the Discovery Riverboat Cruise dock. At 1:45 we boarded a stern wheeler riverboat and ... read more

So remember how I said that I wasn't sure whether it would get any darker? That's a negative...it got lighter! I woke up around 4am and the sunlight peeking out around the room darkening blinds made it look like it was noon outside. Of course, my brain knew that breakfast wasn't until 8:15 and I could sleep until at least 7 so I went back to sleep. I can't say it was the best night's sleep I've ever had...it really is strange how the light just really wants you to wake up, but I did rest and was able to get up and function just fine in the morning. Breakfast was great...there are two other older retired couples staying at the B&B on their way to a cruise and were a lot of fun to chat ... read more
