The beach next to our hotel was beautiful but not the safest ocean to swim in due to the large waves and strong riptimes We were not able to truly dive in and swim but got a little bit too daring playing on the beach. We definitely went in further than we should have but paid the price only in drifts of sand filling every orifice of our body. Sitting by the pool was far more relaxing. This was also the day we listened to the wonderful merits of owning at the Royal Solaris. Might be lovely if it were about 6 hours closer to home. Alas we said no. ... read more

My band 'High Blue Star' set off for Mexico City this morning very early. Brian and I left the house around 6am grabbed a bus to the train, and then to the airport. Our plane left at 10:08 a.m. with a one hour-fifteen minute layover in Houston. Landed in Mexico City at 4:48 p.m. with no problems. We collected our luggage and cleared customs. First thing was to connect with Leonardo our promoter. We found a phone and gave him a call not realizing that to call a cell phone from a regular phone in Mexico costs about 4x's as much as a cell-to-cell call would be. I believe it ended up being $1usd for 30 seconds or so. Brian and I waited in the food court of the airport for Leonardo to arrive. We had ... read more

Well while England have a bank holiday you will be pleased to know that Ed and Gemma went back to school! Once we'd discussed the best teaching methods for our needs we got stuck in and had the first lesson of our 4 hours per day. And that's not counting homework. Gemma surprised herself by picking up the verbs, words and accent in these few hours, a learning curve that could plateau early but so far so good! Getting off the mark with lessons worked wonders at the meal times and they were not so quiet tonight. We have to go now as we have homework to finish (actually Gemma has finished hers as she did it straight after school). ... read more

This part of our little journey entailed a whirlwind of quick stops around the Yucatan Peninsula. In fact, from since we left San Cristobal until we meet our friends Matt and Melissa in Belize we will visit a total of 7 cities and 3 sets of Mayan ruins in merely 13 days. For us, that’s really moving. In addition to the whirlwindishness, this leg of our trip has been really different than the other parts of our journey through Mexico in several ways. One really conspicuous thing has been how many more tourists we’ve encountered, especially tourists from Europe. Whereas in other parts of Mexico we saw tour buses filled with Mexicans on vacation, now everywhere we look there are buses full of French, Spanish, and above all Italians. This is definitely not something I remember ... read more

They are all things I have jumped off!!!! Thats right. I have officially jumped off a cliff. I am SOO happy! That is one things that gets crossed right off that Life To-Do List :) It was so wicked. Thats why it gets first billing in the blog. It was probably a little higher than a the top of a 2 story house. You have to climb up the side, which is just rock, and its basically straight up so you have to kind of climb diagonal. While I was climbing, you know what I was thinking ? Thank god for Twister. No joke. That's actually what was running through my head, as my leg was up by waist and my arms were crossed over each other gripping anywhere they could find. Anyway, I saw one ... read more

Due to the main pool being closed there were some extra perks added on to our holiday. They sent all of the guests on a cruise of Cabo San Lucas harbor to view the famous arch which is the southernmost point of land in North America. The waters of the Pacific ocean meet the Sea of Cortez. The also took us snorkeling to another quieter beach in the area. A fabulous day spent on the water enjoying Mexican warm hospitality, delicious food, incredible sights and amazing sunshine. ... read more

We remember what it is like to have a lay-in, which is fantastic and just get ourselves sorted for the week ahead. In addition to the two of us there are three others - Rachel from Switzerland (who's here for 3 months but seems pretty fluent already to us) and Toby and Sophie from England. These two are coming to the end of a 2 year trip away (1 year in Japan teaching and then working and travelling since). They have many interesting stories and are helping us understand Asia a lot more. We arranged a "family" outing to the cinema to see Miami Vice. While it won't get nominated for an Oscar, or at least we hope not, it entertained us for a couple of hours. The best part of the outing was going ... read more

Sunday greeted us with a quick flight to San Jose de Cabo Airport and arrival at our Royal Solaris home away from home. The people here treat you royally - an All inclusive resort is the only way to go when vacationing with 3 boys (2 teenagers). San Jose de Cabo is about 30 miles NE from the more popular tourist destination of Cabo San Lucas. Our hotel is San Jose -a much quieter and family friendly area. It is on the Eastern side of the Baja Peninsula. The main pool was unfortunately undergoing maintenance so we were confined to one of the smaller pools. Hardly what you would call a hardship. ... read more

First things first, to really start this Guanajuato visit off on the right foot we visited a café called Truco No7, for 'hueves Mexicana' (eggs Mexican style ie HOT). Ed has been thinking about this dish ever since we knew we were coming back here. We had it for breakfast in this very same café after a night out with James in Guanajuato in 2003. We remembered all the old haunts we visited! (In 2003 neither we nor James had mobiles and we hadn't made arrangements for a time and place to meet. But he knew we must be in town because as he was logging onto his hotmail account in an internet café Ed's name came up as the last person to use that computer. Freaky.) Guanajuato is an incredible place. If it wasn't ... read more
