We spent a lot of time today in the internet café, with Gemma spending many hours getting our photos online. It's still work in progress but for those of you who are interested - and we've had a lot of people suggest we do this - we should have details for how to view them on the blog very soon. Other than that, today was very similar to yesterday, with a big chunk of it spent trying to learn Spanish whilst sitting outside cafes. That's unfortunately very much work in progress too. The most important thing to record today though is that it's exactly 2 months since we left the UK. There's a couple of contrasting emotions, both a feeling that time is flying by (... we're a sixth of the way through our trip) ... read more

We left Mexico City this morning and took a 6 hour bus ride into Oaxaca. We are going to try to leave in the morning and head to the coast. There are some ruins here that we wanted to see but the city is pretty dead because of the political problems so we think it is best to get out of here. We still are not able to upload pictures because these computers have blocks on them but we will keep trying. We hope everyone is having a good labor day weekend! We'll write more later. ... read more

Just a quick update: Mexico is undergoing political crises. I last mentioned the election problems when i first arrived a month ago. To recap: The July 2 elections were close between conservative PAN candidate Calderon and leftist-populist candidate AMLO, or Lopez Obrador, who was mayor of Mexico City with Calderon ahead by 1/2% of votes. But there are charges of corruption, ballot stuffing, lost votes, etc. Long story short, AMLO and his supporters have been camping out in the center and streets for over a month in protest, demanding a recount. Just like Democrat in 2000 remember? :) He seems to have widespread support among various sectors of the nation, even the police of MC. But it is hard to tell. Some are weary of Obrador´s campaign and rhetoric and seek normality. The election tribunal finally ... read more

I started off last week with finally completing the first and most complicated stage to obtain my visa. Other than that, I've had more group projects in the past few weeks than I would have in a year at U of I. Everything is very group orientated and it was explained that you aren't an individual here, you are your family, you are the group you work with. Also, I have learned that they are really into titles. Even if a person has earned their bachelors you still have to call them "Licensado" (I don't know if that is how it is spelled but it sounds like that). And for example on my business card it would say: Lic. Alex Orozco. This past week, I visited the Modern Art Museum again and I went to the ... read more

And because I have some pictures to post and a couple of you have bothered me about updating, here's some eye candy and the latest from Monterrey. This past weekend, I headed downtown with an Austrian, an Australian and a Czech. Oh, good times were had all around and memories were made. We wanted to see some sights, check out some museums, and explore Monterrey a little bit more in depth. We arrived downtown, took some pictures and walked through Macroplaza or la Gran Plaza, in the middle of downtown. It is one of the biggest plazas in the world, with an extension of 400,000 square meters consisting of various monuments, smaller plazas and gardens. I had been there before, but I hadn't walked the entirety of it, which seems more like a serious of parks ... read more

Despite what you may think, there really is little rest for us. Whilst you were all putting your feet up watching England thrash Andorra, we were hard at work trying to learn lists of Spanish vocabulary. The fact that we were sitting outside a café in the sunshine actually made it very hard to concentrate. In the afternoon we spent some time with a Canadian chap called Justin heartily criticising America. That last bit is actually not quite true, and was just for the benefit of Mark J-P's American girlfriend Katy. We hear that our blog so far has been a little USA-unfriendly, which is unintentional. We're penning a piece that expands on this for future blog posting, with the working title "Annoying North Americans (vb. not adj.)" In the evening Ed won junior Mexican Trivial ... read more

This was Vince's 16th birthday and unfortunately very little we could do as there was still rain and clouds throughout the day. The hotel was busy mopping up anywhere water came in and repairing any bits of damage. However, we were all very thankful that nothing serious happened and made the best of it. By the end of the day we became quite silly and to Vince's chagrin I am adding in a picture of our silliness. A poor translation of the hotel rules suggested in English that it was illegal to iron in the room - being 16 now Vince decided to be show his rebellious streak. ... read more

On Saturdays in Mexico City there is a street market of the Gothic persuasion. It ran about 5 blocks long and was full of vendors selling clothing, jewelry, posters, Cd's and records... pretty much anything black, depressing, angering, scary, or just plain silly. Under a warm Mexican sun I would guess there were about 500-600 Goth kids/people wandering the market wearing leather, vinyl, velvet, or some combination thereof. At the end of the street there was a kind of "grind-core goth" band playing on a low stage under some sort of awning. With all the food normally found on the streets of this city I half expected to see a booth selling some sort of gothic food, whatever that may be. Maybe "blood shots" with Sangria or something...I don't know. We wandered through the market for ... read more

This is the day that the clouds and rain finally rolled in. The english international version of CNN was the only reports we had. Other than the constant tourist gossip in the lobby. There was internet access but as you can imagine the line ups to the computers were extensive. Just being in that little room with other worried tourists could get you wonder about your sanity in this place. The staff were all exceptional and tried to keep people informed as needed. However Hurricanes as any weather are not always perfectly predictable. The hotel tried to give us a time frame of John making landfall and suggested that we all be in a safe shelter during that time. John however slowed considerably and they kept pushing this time back until finally it was realized that ... read more

On day five we went to, what I believe was, Tepotzlan. (I may be corrected on that name and will change it if it comes up). A beautiful town located in the valley between two mountains. We visited some of Leonardo's family. The yards of the two houses almost fixed together were full of flowers of every sort. A bit later we decided to have a look around town. I was doing a bit of shopping for some friends in a local street market when i noticed a few sprinkles of rain again. The street vendors started frantically moving all of their wares. It was such a flurry of people running around and next thing...downpour. Probably the stongst one during our stay. The five of us took shelter... read more
