Another early start today, but this time we mean REALLY early. Up at 4am is almost too early, especially after another dreadful night's sleep. But we made our bus (less than GBP1 for well over an hour's journey) along with an awful lot of Mexicans on their way to work. Today's objective was to get from the beach town of Sayulita to the 2000m+ altitude town of Guanajuato, our home for 2 weeks whilst we conquer the Spanish language. After thoroughly enjoying their buses last time, we again opted to go with ETN. Ed slept continuously for more than 4 hours, which must be something of a record for daytime public transport. The bus hit traffic - we half expected the ETN bus to get a police escort through this but alas even premium service ... read more

So, I have hot water, a cell phone, and a copy of the keys to my house. My life is nearly complete... I still need a refridgerator, a book on how to teach English, a better towel, a Mexican or Canadian girlfriend, and a map of Pachuca. If you have any of these things, please send them to me: Joshua Heller c/o Liceo Anglo Frances Blvd Luis Donaldo Colosio s/n Fracc. Arboledas de San Javier Pachuca, Hidalgo 42080, Mexico This week has been good. The school gives very little structure, which sometimes makes it hard to teach things like adverbs, but it also means I can teach whatever I want. I am teaching the kids who actually speak English, basically an American Studies course I took on personal narratives. I think I will also do units ... read more

Our last full day by the beach so needless to say it was another busy one - splashing about in the waves and eating and drinking. The cafes and restaurants here are not the cheapest in Mexico (though cheaper than we've been used to on our trip so far) but the standard of food is surprisingly high given the out-of-the-way location. The logic seems to be that the typical customer here is more likely to be influenced by nicer meals than by lower prices - there are quite a few Americans here after all - and we were extremely satisfied with the result. Recommendations: 'Choco Banana' for breakfast or lunch, 'Hot Chilli' for dinner. The latter place earned extra points by welcoming us tonight with "yey, my honeymooners are back". Sayulita's beach really would score ... read more

Places Visited : - San Miguel De Allende, Guanajuato and Zacatecas After Mexico City we headed north to a pretty little town called San Miguel De Allende. This was a nice chilled out place with lots of quaint and quirky shops selling handicrafts and jewellery, pottery and lots of different types of art, this is a great place to relax which is why it was voted in the top 20 places to retire in the world, this explains why there are so many wealthy old Americans, they were everywhere! Women covered in thick makeup, plastic surgery evident and the men smoking huge cigars and talking really loudly about how rich they are!?! Due to the ex-pat influence and money in the town there were lots of great places to eat, we tried a restaurant called El ... read more

so this morning i was riding the university bus to school which i paid about 200 dollars to take me to school and home everyday because my house is so far from the busstop, and it was weird. i guess i had one of those epiphanies from the movies. i am totally like one of the rich mexicans here who can not only afford to go to the university but also afford to pay for the school bus and not have to walk an hour and then ride the city bus for an hour. i basically felt like a spoiled brat. i guess i´m starting to realize how lucky i really am and i know it sounds corny and lame but really you can´t judge until you come here and see what i mean because i ... read more

This past weekend I had the amazing opportunity to go on an excursion to Cuatro Cienegas in Coahuila, Mexico. Cuatro Cienegas is a desert with about 200 natural oasis which are the home of countless, rare species of plants, fish, and bacteria. One pool called the blue pool is being studied by NASA because the bacteria that colors the water a gorgeous blue produces oxygen. It was a fairly short trip; we left at 7 am on Sat. and returned at 10 pm Sunday, but it felt like a true vacation. For one thing, I slept in a room with air conditioning. Plus the weather there was a lot "nicer" anyway because there wasn't quite so much humidity.... actually got to wear my hair down without it being a complete fro. On Saturday we visited a ... read more

A similar day to yesterday. Today's chores included a trip to the internet café. Here we heard the bad news - Man City lost 3-nil at Chelsea in their opening game of the new season. Another storm was brewing which we watched from the edge of the sea. It seemed to have had a positive effect on the waves and the surfers were out en masse. All very impressive, although it's bound to be far easier than it looks. Ed amused Gemma by successfully playing chicken with 6ft breaking waves, earning the soubriquet "faster than a cheetah driving a bullet train" from the admiring beach-bums (... poetic licence strikes again). The storm also had an effect on the wildlife and a substantial part of the evening was spent coaxing a crab out of our open-fronted ... read more

Well, Steve and I have arrived safely in Mexico-- yay! We´re finally on the last leg of the journey....Just one more week to go. I really wanted to post some pìcs of the cool things weve seen and done, but it appears that my camera cable got lost/left behind at some point, so no more pics until I get home..... ): Here´s a brief re-cap of what we´ve been up to. After sucessfully taking Ticabus from Nicaragua through Honduras, we managed to get across the El Salvadorian border (phew!) and spent the night in a dingy little hostel in San Salvador before the final leg of or journey to Guatemala the next day. The hospedaje we stayed out was heavily locked and gated, with a sliding metal door with three locks, topped with barbed wire, and ... read more
