Hi Everyone, Finally found some time to give our first update of the travels. We´re in Merida, the capital city of the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. It´s scorchio, about 30c and though we planned to be here for a couple of nights, it looks like an interesting place and there´s a cultural festival on, so we´re going to stay a bit longer. We´ve already ´done´ Miami. Highlights were· (pardon my grammar, I can´t find a colon on this keyboard!) Accidentally walking through Miami´s apparently very popular nudist beach (made sure we looked at the sea for 10 minutes). Nice hotel on the beach, though our room looked like it had been part of the set of Miami Vice, and not updated since. Great window shopping on Lincoln Drive, accompanied by a massive rain shower. After Miami ... read more

Ok. So here I am in Merida. I LOVE it. Merida is super beautiful and super awesome and clean and safe and wonderful. Guess where I am right now, for example? I'm in the park, with my laptop, using the free wireless that's here. They told me Merida is the safest city in Mexico, if not all of Latin America. Awesome, no? The police here don't even carry guns. And it's really lovely and clean and all the people are so nice and everyone speaks super-clearly so I've understood everything. It's amazing. Oh! And even more unbelievable, dogs here are ACTUALLY pets!! In most of Latin America there are dirty stray dogs all over the place, but all the dogs here are clean and belong to people. My house mother says there are two bad dogs ... read more

Mérida’s Plaza Grande was a Tippi Hedren nightmare. Swarms of birds blanketed the trees of the square, their individual shapes barely distinguishable in the nebulous mass and their macabre chorus almost deafening. Had the carpet of bird droppings not suggested otherwise, I would have been convinced that the high-pitched screeching was produced by an army of bats, not birds. Bathed in the glow of several illuminated reindeer, smitten couples, spongy grandmothers and sleepy-eyed children strolled about the town square, defiant in the face of the faecal fusillade and ceaseless squawking from above. Holidaymakers in horse-drawn buggies chased the last wisps of twilight through the crowded streets, waving cameras at clusters of colonial edifices and confettiing the air with squeals of laughter. Built on the site of a Maya city, Mérida was once considered to have one ... read more

We decided to stay in Merida for Christmas. Capital of the Yucatan state, we hoped it was big enough to find things open around the holiday. We were not disappointed .. but that is getting a little of ourselves. We arrived on the 23rd and took a taxi to the hotel we booked. We got a fairly indifferent welcome so left in search of a more welcoming hotel. Wanting the option of watching TV on Christmas Day we tried some of the mid-range hotels and found the Santa Lucia (same owner as the San Clemente in Valladolid) pleasant enough. Got a balcony and a rocking chair and a big TV for the slightly high price of P$490 (US$47). But we would be comfortable. Merida is the 10th largest city in Mexico but you wouldn't think it. ... read more

Lord knows how we´re going to justify this one. Without even so much as a half hearted "anniversary" to justify it, we´ve gone and booked ourselves into another boutique, luxury, ridiculously nice, Grand Designs-style hotel from heaven. Regular readers willl spot a trend developing that will probably have us home, destitute and begging from affluent friends by Christmas. Hi guys! The "Medio Mundo" is just about perfect really, interior designed to within an inch of it´s life, staffed by attentive smiley staff, and made solely from gold, platinum and semi precious stones*. It´s making us quite homesick for Brixton. Acually I exaggerate mahossively. Our hotel does rock, but it´s actually only about $2 squid a night more than the flea pit in which we resided whilst in Mexico city. Before this turns into a snippet from ... read more

Free day in Merida, another beautiful colonial city. I spent my free time shopping, sightseeing and finding a beautician to prepare myself for three sunfilled days in Cancun! It's the little things like haircuts and waxing appointments that help give me some routine.... read more

We left Campeche for Uxmal, another Mayan ruin. This site was different to the others, the most beautiful so far in terms of architecture. Afterwards we stopped into to see a Mayan family who made hammocks and grew a lot of their own vegetables and herbs. We arrived in Merida in the late afternoon to more rain. We have a free day tomorrow, hopefully it won't rain. I'm just looking forward to sleeping in.... read more

hope your all well and that the autumn is not too cold. spent the mexico day of independence in Tulum. This consists of the whole nation sinking gallons of tiqula (which I have never liked and wont go near) but its a carnival in every street with the most awful out of tune brass bands on the planet. An ex public school brigaderes son from Chelsea 'Tom (whom i call master Henshaw) and i where looking for a bar in a jungly part of the coast where we stumbled across a massive film crew filming Bulgarian Temptation Island - we nearly got in stating we where the mystery gay couple and that an email from our agent had been sent. We knew our fib would not work when 5 security guards with guns came for us. ... read more
