So on Friday I didn´t have class (Student´s day or something), so my teacher took us scuba diving (finally) inside a cenote. So we´re supposed to meet Memo at 8, but he doesn´t show up until 8:40. We weren´t really surprised, cause he´s always late, just more annoyed. Anyway, We drove for like an hour and a half to this town where he started driving all over the town looking for someone to lend him a pulley (seriously. Couldn´t he just own a pulley?) Anyway, after like an hour of that we got to the cenote and started getting ready. The cenote was basically a hole in the ground with a huge cave and water at the bottom. So we climbed down a super rickety old ladder (one of the rungs was out) and got into ... read more

So anyway, on Tuesday we woke up and got some bread from the bakery before grabbing the bus to UADY since I had two classes. We saw some of the people from my program, whom I introduced to Luke and went off to my boring classes while he heard about UADY from some of my classmates. After my class we went back downtown and ate at a high class vegetarian restaurant that's down there. We ended up switching meals because we each liked the other's better. Afterwards we went to the market and bought some really cheap fruit. We thought we'd try some of the native fruits, like Mamey and Zapote, but it turns out it's hard to find a ripe fruit that you don't know. Oh well. After that we took a little nap because ... read more

OK, so last Sunday I left my house at five am so I could take a 6 am bus to Cancun. It wasn´t the most exciting thing ever, you know, just a four and a half hour bus ride followed by a half hour one to the airport, but I was excited. When I got to the airport, Luke had already been waiting for fourty-five minutes (oops... I guess I should have taken the five am bus...), but the whole place was full of tour guides with their signs waiting for people, and when we saw each other we kissed, and everyone started wooing and clapping. It was awesome. Then we got right back on the bus I had just gotten off of and returned to the lovely bus station in Cancun, where we bought second ... read more

I went to the beach this weekend. My house parents have a beach house in Chelem (yeah, it´s not on the list, so I didn´t put it.) It´s really cute. They share a backyard with my house dad´s siblings. The dad used to own the whole lot and split it between his kids so they could each build a house on it, and it´s cute because all the kids play together in the backyard that is basically a gigantic sandbox. I didn´t swim much, but I did a lot of knitting and a lot of sleeping, so it was really relaxing. One quite exciting thing happened, (for me anyway): one of the kids is taking english class, so they told him I´m American and that I speak English, but he didn´t believe me and even after ... read more

Done with my classes!! Two week break! Which feels like three because Luke is coming right afterward. It´s very exciting. Anyway, I´m really going to enjoy these next two weeks and I´m really happy I´m done with classes, because it´s just exciting! Tomorrow and Sunday I´m going to the beach with my house family (they have a beach house) then Monday I´m going to the beach again, but with a friend, Tuesday I´m doing the Ruta Puuc (four little Mayan sites and Uxmal again. Half an hour each for the little sites and two hours for Uxmal. It´s the only way to see the little sites) Wednesday I´m going to Izamal, a town that has a pretty cathedral and a pyramid in the middle of it. Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday I´m going on a trip ... read more

Saturday 9th February 2008 to 12th February 2008 So we joined our group of 11 people to travel for three weeks around the Yucatan Peninsula in mexico, Guatemala & Belize. After getting to know each other at another trip to Coco Bongo´s we left the hotel in Cancun early with sore heads to the ADO bus terminal. ADO is the Mexican equivalent to National express or Greyhound coaches. We were a bit dubious at first but they were immaculate and modern & very well organised. Ideal for catching up on well deserved sleep or recover from hangovers the coach was extremly comfortable. We took the ADO to Chichen Itza about 3 hours outside Cancun. Chichen Itza has just been voted in as 7th out of the 7 new wonders of the world. Its a ruin of ... read more

So, get this. We were told when we should get back because the program ends then, and so do (supposadly) all of our classes. So, anyway, it turns out to be a lit (at least for my classes) because they all (except one, set up by the program) end A MONTH before I´m supposed to come home. That means that (taking out spring break) I only have six more weeks of classes. (WHAT?! Didn´t I just start them? I thought so....Maybe I missed something). So that last month is going to be odd, what with only having class on Friday mornings. So weird. There are a lot of holidays too, so it´s not even like I´m actually in classes for all of the six weeks. Something seems extremely odd here.... Oh well, I suppose that´s the ... read more

Ok, so I feel like I´ve been neglecting you guys a little bit lately, but I really don´t mean to. Here´s the thing: Remember when I got that intestinal infection? Well, I missed four classes and got REALLY behind on my work, so I´ve pretty much been reading/writing 24/7 lately. Prime example: it´s 5:45 am and I just got done writing a paper, but I have class at 8 am, which means I have to wake up in 45 minutes. As a 45 minute nap is useless, I´m using 20 minutes of it to write to you guys so I can have a twenty minute nap before six hours of classes before coming home and taking a nap. When I wake up from the nap, though, I have to read/write a 2 page response to about ... read more

Ok, so the bus system. It occured to me that I haven´t told you guys about the bus system yet. It´s awesome. You can get from anywhere in the city to anywhere in the city on buses. Kind of like the NYC subway system. Only there´s one problem. There´s no map. And no signs. You just have to magically know where to go to get the bus and which bus to take to go where. So it´s great if you know that, but if not, you´re sort of screwed. Ok, the apology. I don´t know when I´m going to be able to put up the pictures of Chichen Itza and Carnaval. In order to do it I need to take my laptop to the park where there´s free wireless, but I have to go at night ... read more
