Left our camp at Quinta Alicia heading south to the south of Veracruz following all our friends we are travelling with through bannanna belt, the roads were a real day of a bad day of roads, rough no shoulder and how many Topez? Crossing the Nautla river we came to our first toll 40 pesos for a cuota road that was no better and maybe worse than we had been travelling Mex 180. But the beauty to come was worth the roads we are now in sugar cane country going like a herd of turtles across the country , the speed is 100 kms in our rigs 70 kms seems tough.Second toll of the day 84 pesos. Finally arrived at our destination but guess what even though we reserved CLOSED another Mexican experience we settled on ... read more

Even when I get up early, things don't quite seem to go as I planned. And these dang nails don't let me type very fast or accurately on this keyboard either, whose great idea was that? Isabel woke us up just before 8am so we could get a move on and try to make it to Puebla in time to catch the 9:30 bus to Veracruz. Although we kept things moving along, we still didn't make it out to the highway to catch a bus until 9am and it's a good 20 minutes into town with little traffic. Today didn't seem to be one of those days though as we didn't make it to Puebla CAPU until closer to 10am. Keep in mind, this is a huge bus station so the tickets sell out as each ... read more

Il ... read more

May 6, Wednesday I checked out of the hotel and got to the Vesca BMW dealer right at 9:00 am as they opened. After a bit of back and forth explaining what I wanted - the routine 12,000 mile service - I was told to expect it to be done by 4:00. So, since they didn't offer loaner bikes, unlike the Beaver Falls WI shop, I walked a few blocks to a big mall. Breakfast, coffee, and walking around the mall took up about two and a half hours, then I walked back to the dealer in the 90 something heat. I was hoping that they'd be done earlier so I could get some miles behind me but the mechanic, who is apparently the only guy in the place that speaks any English, came and told ... read more

May 3, Sunday Up early, packed and on the road prior to 8:00 am, the earliest departure so far. We had an easy day's run into Veracruz from here, only about 160 miles, and the road was a lot more twisty than most of the Yucatan penninsula, much more like a relative of Chiapas. We stopped for lunch at Catemaco, in the same restaurant overlooking the beautiful lake as before with Rafa and friends. More good food here, and we watched the baby ducks feed, the little boat taxis run in and out, and finally decided to continue on. The last several miles into Veracruz was bumper to bumper, but we found the hotel I'd been aiming for with only a small amount of backtracking. Hotel Suites Mediteraneo, actually located in Boca del Rio, is just ... read more

April 6, Monday About 2:30 am the wind came up something fierce out of the northeast. Little showers blew through, and I had to get up to zip up a few things, and tighten up some lines. The wind got stronger, to the point of blowing stakes out of the sand. By about 6:30 I'd been up several times, and finally got the extra line out of my bag and tied the appropriate tent poles to trees. This at least kept the tent from bending into a pretzel, and also from blowing away completely. Big Agnes is pretty sturdy, but this was a 35 to 40 knot wind, and she was staked down in sand. I did notice several of the other tents were completely down, probably due to broken fiberglass poles, and some had been ... read more

Well i haven't updated in a while so here i go! So since last i've spent most of my time in Monterrey chillin, going to class and just living life. I climbed Cerro de la Silla, the symbol of Monterrey. It took the people i climbed with, and myself, a good 5.5 hours to climb up and back down again. We spent a total of about 8 hours on the mountain, counting our midway break, and our break at the very top. After Cerro school was back, and I got some tests back, the first one i got back was in fluids and it was a 76, which is just above failing here. The second, and last test i got back was in my thermodynamics class, I got a grand total of 50% on it. That's ... read more

On our last day on Costa Esmeralda we had an opportunity to visit a vanilla plantation. Clair from Trailer Park de Alba was escorting members of the Vagabundo RV caravan and invited us to tag along. This is the fifth time Clair has escorted caravans to Onza but the first time that the owner, Adrian, was there to conduct the tour. Adrian told us that he was of Dutch descent and the third generation owner of the farm. He spoke English with a slight European accent but was born and raised here in Mexico. The tour was fascinating. As soon as we got out of our cars we could smell the aroma of vanilla. Vanilla beans grow in clusters on vines. Vanilla grows naturally in this area but to be of good quality it must be ... read more

- Before I begin, (although I already have), I want to apologize in advance for any rigid language or offensive ramblings that may follow - As travels advance, and experiences mature, I am greeted with exactly what I expected; An exciting, yet diverse array of holas and "que el diablo te escupa el culos'". (Rough translation: " That the devil spits in your asshole". - (An abrupt 'fuck you' of sorts)). I mean this in a loose sense. Nobody has actually said this to me, yet, I have shared it with many people. In fact, I learned it from a Colombian named Alfredo, who most eloquently shared with me, (about a year ago), the workings of negative Venezuelan greetings (so he claimed). In reality, my awakening to annoyances with turistas from the locals' perspectives has come ... read more
