Well after an exhaustingly hot day in Veracruz visiting the fortress of San Juan de Ulua, we're off to lunch. We had an amazing meal at Villa Rica restaurant. The seafood was incredible. It seems like the meals just keep on coming - course after course - ummm! Our next stop was to visit another tourist attraction in Veracruz, the El Aquario. We saw lots of neat sea creatures - turtles, fish, manatees, and jellyfish. In the evening, we all felt like shopping so we visited a art market on the malecon. It's great - a place where you can bargain for what you want. There was also entertainment - dancing and music traditional Veracruz style. Now, its time to get back on the bus for an hour and half drive back into Xalapa. I'll ... read more

I think I need some calm, my mind is zipping and feeling stressed from the constant noise and activity and changes. Had not planned to stay today, but when I got up late did not feel like moving on either. Got a bit drunk for my first time in Mexico last night - was going for one beer at one of the places under the portales that are by the zocallo as was feeling stressed and tired, had a second, and they were 3 for 2 so had a third - slightly busier there last night, the mariachis and other musicians who stroll around the portales approaching tables and playing for money - good but felt loud last night, and the guys selling watches, nuts, shining shoes, and women selling cigars. A band out later in ... read more

Again this is an entry that was started a day ago in another city which in the travelling timewarp seems light years away - especially after an overnight 15 hour bus ride. At least the buses are more comforatable than in Canada and the US - lots of leg room and the seats recline and fortunately they turn off the movies between 11pm and 7 am (they have overhead speakers here - you do not use headsets and while you often can turn off the speaker above your head, your neighbour is not far away - this bus had fold down televisions and unlike in Canada where they played videos here it is all on computer). Staying in a cheap hotel here near the zocallo - basic, clean, seems safe - for 150 pesos a night ... read more

Well it is now 2006 so let me start off by saying that I hope all reading this will be blessed beyond degree this year. With that said let me tell you how we brought the New Year in. Suzanne and I returned to GTO on the 28th of December after spending Christmas season with our family in Indy and Ohio. Now the original plan was to spend New Year’s Eve in Puerto Vallarta or La Manzanilla, both of which are located on the Pacific Coast side of Mexico. The temperature in this region is like 83-90 degrees in December, beautiful white sand beaches, and baby blue water. So to make this a good time I went to a travel agent to make our hotel and travel accommodations. Well I had no idea how popular this ... read more

In the farming hills of Vera Cruz state, about 50 K from the Gulf of Mexico, I found silence and livestock rolling in the grass. You need a compass up there to navigate because there are no road signs to speak of. Coffee producing mountain towns like Coatapec and Xico, about 10 km from Jalapa (Xalapa), offer unusual access to rural life.... read more
