If you recall when we had to postpone our trip home due to Lara's illness, hero mom called & found out her travel insurance would cover a portion of our extra few days. Mom received the forms in the mail & being out of town my niece Meghan agreed to hand deliver them to us. Dad was put in charge of getting "operation" forms to Meg's house . When he didn't find her at home, he simply put the big envelope somewhere on her car & left. When mom called Meg to mention the envelope was in/on her car, she went searching for it. Not long after she looked over & there was her spirited doggy Harley having a grand old time ripping the forms to shreds!! Yep, the dog REALLY ate our homework! He was ... read more

After another rainy night & wet clothes on the clothesline... some things may never dry, oh well. Awoken by the roosters & dogs & babies next door. Love it! We had breakfast at Lucy's this morning, which was recommended by Peter. Lucy's is just that, her house, her kitchen, her kitchen table & a small handwritten sign on the wall with what is available to order. We sat at her table & ordered from her brother, who was covering for her for the day so she could go to church with her daughter, Sophia. Sophia was at the table finishing her breafast sandwich. Our breakfast was fantastic of course. Scrambled eggs with ham & empanadas (just made by Lucy's brother) of chicken. Yummm!! After our $8 breakfast we strolled through town, said hello to the dogs ... read more

We had delicious coffee this morning from Peter who is from Vancouver BC & owns the only coffee stand (basically an umbrella & a table off the road) I've yet to see in Mexico. It was truly amazing coffee. Not cheap but made with love & care. 60 pesos for our 2 coffees. Like Seattle prices! We met a couple from Quebec who are travelling through Mexico for 3 weeks with their 3 year old & 9 month old. Brave! They said it was easy.... They are in the Palapa next to us & have offered to let us use their kitchen when we would like since we are without one. It's so interesting travelling & meeting all the open & welcoming people from all over the world, including the Mexicans who live here. It's ... read more

DAY 39 Had a nice sleep in and got up around 8am. We headed out to the buffet breakfast which was pretty good. Again a nice variety of different foods you could choose from. From here we booked dinner for tonight, booked our Coba Maya adventure for Wednesday, picked up some beach towels and headed to the beach, where we stayed for most of the day. We drank cocktails, swam, read our books until about 2ish when we had some lunch at the grill by the beach. This was a buffet as well – we tried not to eat as much but its so hard when there is so much good food! After lunch we headed to the pool so we could use the swim up bar. We lay in the hammocks for awhile, before moving ... read more

DAY 40 We woke up around 8am again, went for brekky – i only had muesli this morning but still managed to get really full! We headed out to play mini golf which was pretty cool. They have 18 holes and the course isn’t too bad. We only played one game and i won- yippee! We had a wander around the shopping centre and checked out some of the shops. There is heaps of stuff we could buy if we had room in our luggage, but we are already so overweight its not funny! We headed down to the beach to try out the kayaks and managed to get a 2 person one. The water was pretty calm so it was fairly easy going. The water is just beautiful though you can see right to the ... read more

DAY 38 Had the alarm set for 3.45am as we had to get a taxi at 4.30am so we were at the airport by 5.30am ready for our flight at 7am. I had a heart attack when i looked at my watch as it said 4.50am – i thought Scott had set the alarm wrong. I looked at the time on the laptop, phone and alarm clock and they all said 3.50am.....couldn’t figure out what had happened! When i looked up the time online, i realised that daylight savings had ended and the phone and alarm clock had automatically updated! Thank God. We got through Passport control on the border no problem and got to the airport by about 5.30am. When we checked in, we realised our flight had been cancelled. I thought this was a ... read more

DAY 41 We got up nice and early around 6am ready for our tour pickup at 7.50am. We showered, brekky and packed our day bag. We got picked up right on time. After picking up one last group from another resort we headed on our way to Coba. The tour consisted of guided tour of the Mayan ruins at Coba, Ziplining in the jungle, kayak in the jungle and rapell into a cenote (which is an underground cave with water in it). It took about an hour to get to Coba and our guide introduced us to another guide who would give us some history on the Mayan culture and architecture. We went to a couple of sets of ruins first. First was a temple that you could climb about half way up and you could ... read more

DAY 42 Had a bit of a sleep in as was fairly hungover from the night before. We got up around 9.30ish and headed over for buffet breakfast which helped a little bit. We also booked our taxi to the airport for the next day and i bought my souvenir shot glass. We headed over to the beach where we pretty much stayed all day. It was a really nice day and the sun hung around all day. We swam, read by the beach and drank cocktails. Must say once i got in the water my hangover pretty much disappeared. We had some lunch even though we weren’t really that hungry and layed back on the beach until about 5ish. We played a game of pool – which i won, before heading back to the room ... read more

Akumal is a beach area between Tulum and Cancun where sea turtles nest from May to October, and where the coral reef is fairly close to shore. Usually the turtles are gone by now, but for some reason some of them are still around, feeding on the sea grass in the area. We rented life jackets from the dive shop so we could swim farther and longer, and were able to see and swim alongside some turtles. We spend a wonderful day in the ocean, being amazed at the diversity of life in the ocean, and on this reef, the second largest coral reef in the world (after Australia's). We walked around the town of Akumal, which has a lot of big, fancy hacienda properties. Apparently, there is more tourist money here than in Tulum. Clouds ... read more

Today we went to the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve for a birdwatching tour in kayaks. There were just Steve and I in one kayak, and two other fellows in single kayaks, along with our guide, Miguel, in his own kayak. We paddled past mangroves out into the lagoon, which is the largest protected area in the Mexican Caribbean, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was windy, from the side, so we fought the wind both out and back. It was worth it though, as we saw many types of herons, pelicans, cormorants, and even roseate spoonbills. We sat in our kayaks and watched the sun set over the water, then went back to the centre for a delicious fresh fish dinner. All the people who work here are passionate about saving this place and its ... read more
