Hey everyone! The first week was rough but its getting better little by little. On Saturday we went to Teotihucan - Ruins of the ancient Aztecs. The bus ride was 2.5 hours and I slept the whole time. It was freezing when we got there but by noon we were stripping our layers off which resulted in mass sunburns - including me. There are 2 major pyramids (built with the same base as the egyptians) called Sol (the sun) and Luna (the moon). Sol is one of the biggest pyramids in the world and I climbed to the top! It reminded much of the Mayan temple in Tikal, Guatemala. The trip was organized by the International club who is headed by Pili and Berto, 2 mexican students at my school who try to help the exchange ... read more

Today was an extremely beautiful day! we woke up late and then went to lay out in the sun, yes in shorts and tank tops in the middle of January! And this is supposedly as cold as it gets here :) we ordered Papa Johns (which by the way is very expensive in Mexico!) this came to my suprise! But it was delicious! We hung out with some of our Mexican friends and Dina, our friend from Chicago (she has the accent and all!) Then we played soccer "futbol" on the beautiful fields as the sun set. Because we are at such a high altitude it always looks like we are literally in the clouds. I have never seen a sky more beautiful then here in Puebla, pink, blue, orange, white, red, it's really breath taking! ... read more

HOLA!!!! I am looking out my dorm room window right now as the sun is shining brightly and i can hear the very nice women who clean our rooms everyday just outside my door. Nishi and I are rooming together even though we requested Mexican roommates. There just weren't enough new Mexican students this semester, but its okay because we are making friends all over the place, both within our international group and with Mexicans at the University and at nearby Universities. This place IberoAmericana is sooo beautiful!1 I have never seen a University like this, everything is so nice and new and all of the classrooms are open air and there is a big court yard that runs through the whole thing where everyone hangs out talking and on their laptops (the whole campus is ... read more

Hola from Puebla! It's only been 5 days but so much has happened. The two flights from home weren't bad (I slept because of the Dramamine) and then slept on the 2 hour bus ride from the airport to Puebla. I traveled with my friends Tal, Kate, and Nishi. We found a small hotel which was an extremely funny experience because the toilet was in the shower... and after a quick rest up we went to a club called El Tigre - The Tiger. It is a well known club in Chulola (i think thats how you spell it) and that is the next town over home to UDLA the University of the Americas. The other three girls know 3 guys that they met over last spring break in Acapulco and they took us. It was ... read more

Arriving in the city of Puebla (population over 2 million) we were greeted by the biggest bus terminal we had ever seen. In other Mexican cities there were often individual terminals for the different companies and at least they were split between first and other classes of bus. But in Puebla they were all in the same location, hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of them. We were only staying for one night and didn't want to waste time looking for a hotel. Taking a Lonely Planet recommendation we took a taxi straight to the Hotel Puebla Plaza. It was a little pricey at P$550 (US$52) but the room was quite lovely and a little posh so we took it. It was around midday that we started to explore the historic town. We obtained a map from ... read more

Determined to make one more tourist stop before returning to Mexico City, we spent New Year's Eve in Puebla. Given the city’s population of over a million, and its claim to fame as home to - amongst other things - the chocolate-based sauce mole (pronounced 'moh-lay'), a retired Popemobile, and a local Oktoberfest, we imagined that New Year's Eve would prove a lively date on the calendars of the gastronome, the religious, and the reveller. We managed to find an establishment on the main square or zócalo which would provide us with dinner and the 12 grapes that tradition requires be rapidly consumed with each toll of the bell as the new year is rung in. Taking a preprandial ramble, we noticed a large queue spilling out of a Kentucky Fried Chicken and halfway down the ... read more

We had a 7am start today. First stop was Teotihuacan to climb the Pyramids of the Sun and the Moon. I climbed them last weekend with my GAP tour group so I stayed back and helped Lisa buy and prepare lunch. That gets my lunchtime responsibilities out of the way for the rest of the tour. After lunch we took the Tucan bus (it's painted bright yellow with a Tucan on the side so you can't miss it) to Puebla. On the way we stopped and took photos of Popocatepetl, the second highest volcano in Mexico. Our hotel in Puebla is lovely and perfectly located opposite the town square. Today is Mexican Independence Day so there are street stalls, music, clowns and lots of families on the streets. Puebla is famous for talavera ceramic tiles and ... read more

After 4 days in big ol´Mexico City, I decided to see what some of the smaller towns were like, so I travelled 2 hours by bus to a cute town called Puebla. It is really dinky and there are lots of old beautiful brightly-coloured buildings. There is a main square where they have performances and entertainment every night, and people selling helium balloons on every corner. I also spent an afternoon in a nearby town called Cholula, which is home to the widest pyramid ever built. Not that it looks like a pyramid, mind you- it is all covered in grass, and when the Spanish invaded they built a church on it! Have been eating lots of yummy spanish food. At the moment cheese quesadillas are my favourite and I´m still laughing at plates of refried ... read more
