Bad news.. it appears that all the pictures on my camera are now blurry.. it had been happening on and off for a while but its got to the point i am no longer using it :( i cant transfer pics from my phone to the computer without a bit of hassle so for the moment its blurry pics.. should hopefully just be for this post though I hadnt sunbathed since northern colombia (5 weeks ago maybe?) so I was delighted to hit the beach for the first time in ages. From Oaxaca we took a 7 hour mini bus over the hills in a very windy journey in order to reach the pacific coast, also deceptively the furthest south in mexico that we will go. (carribean is higher north interestingly). For once, we were arriving ... read more

Today was a long 11 hr day starting with a short day trip to some of ancient ruins s the Oaxaca region firstly visiting Monte Alban. Again a World Heritage site the now ruins were built on a spectacular mountain top that has been flattened by the Zapotec civilization but retaining a strategic view overlooking the valleys of Oaxaca. The ruins include pyramids, temples and residential structures centred around a great square. We then backtracked to Oaxaca for Mitla, one of the most enigmatic sacred places of the region, especially famous for its mosaics. On our return to Oaxaca we had a photo stop at a pretty little town of Tule, famous for a tree of the same name, a cypress variety, & believed to the widest tree in the world & one of the tallest ... read more

Today was a very long day, 500km trip, leaving Mexico City for two days based in Oaxaca (pronounced Wahaka. What tha!). First we picked up the rest of our passengers for the next 9 days. 5 in total, 2 male Columbians & a retired couple from Brisbane & me. First stop was Puebla, Mexico’s fourth largest city after passing the immense, usually visible snow-capped volcanoes Popocatépetl (Smoking Mountain, 5464m) and Iztaccíhuatl (Sleeping Lady, 5230m). Didn't seem as impressive as I would have thought but you barely noticed that the highway had climbed to over 3000 mtrs so looked small in the distance. Near Puebla we visited the Santa Maria Tonantzintla temple with an amazing fusion of indigenous and Christian religious decoration. It is so over the top yet beautiful at the same time. From the big smoke we took the (expensive) bus 7 hours south to Oaxaca city (and capital of state) for the next leg of our trip. When leaving mexico city, it was surprising just how expensive the bus was (i think about $30 - comparable to a cheap UK bus) and also how serious security was, you had to check your bag in like an airport and go through scanners, and get your hand luggage searched! We thought for the price the bus was going to be amazing. It was pretty good, but nothing like good buses in brazil or colombia which were really spacious and luxurious. Anyhow, no real dramas and got to our next hostel after catching a second bus. Oaxaca city is lovely, i think it is actually UNESCO heritage site, very colonial ... read more

We made it through our last major border crossing in Central America back into Mexico. None of the borders were difficult to cross, maybe just a little hot and stuffy while we waited for our passports to be stamped. We made our way back to San Cristobal for a short visit because we really enjoyed it the first time around. While there, we ate delicious tacos at the market, made fresh guacamole from market ingredients and visited Vina de Bacco a cute downtown wine bar that has a glass of wine and a tapa for the equivalent of CAD1.80. The excitement of our time in town was the twister that hit in the shanty town just north of the hostel. From the roof we could see winds picking up corrugated tin walls from the houses, that ... read more

Hello everyone I FINALLY made it out of Asia to bluer skies, MUCH better food and different colored people (Normalcy is amazing I must say) I flew from the city I was working in in Vietnam to Ho Chi Minh City via Jetstar it was a smooth and easy hour and a half ride and accompanying me was my boss of all people lol. We found out we were on the same flight the before we were going to the airport in Vinh. It was a nice sendoff as he was really the only helpful and cool person there and not to mention he speaks English. We landed and they didn't have any checked baggage and I had to wait for mine to come around so I gave him a hug and told him thanks for ... read more

It's an area covered with history, tales and tragedy..... I've been to several ruins in Mexico and Central America in my travels.... Chichen Itza, Tulum, Copan, Yaxchitlan, Bonampak which sadly was before I started this blog and even sadder I didn't have a chance to write about them and get the pictures up before my External hard drive crashed last year in Vietnam :-(. Nevertheless, I made it to Oaxaca and got a chance to see the long awaited Monte Alban ruins! This is one of the cleanest sites I've been to much like Copan in Honduras, you could easily go by yourself for a bit cheaper price, but I booked it through the hostel I'm staying at in Oaxaca (Don Nino) and it costed 200 MX for a full day and included going to a ... read more

After a long 13 hour bus ride that was only supposed to be 10 hours, we made it to Oaxaca just before dark. We were again having trouble pulling money out of the ATM's even with our credit cards so on our first night we spent our last MXN40 on a small dinner shared between us. Fortunately, the next morning we found a Scotiabank (side note: who knew there were Scotiabanks in Mexico) that worked and we needn't worry any longer. Our first day was fairly relaxed; we wandered around the city center, saw crickets for sale in the market and stopped by a cafe for a coffee and apple strudel. The climate in Oaxaca seemed to be right up our ally; being in the mountains, it was cool but not quite as cold as San ... read more

Hello there. I did not include in any of my last blog posts my visit to San Jose del Pacifico on the way to Masunte. Which worked out well actually because I passed through again with a little more exploration, so now I´ll recount both enchanted visits. And enchanted they certainly were. San Jose Part I: The Fog A group of young hooligans and I left Cielo Rojo in Oaxaca a few weeks ago (Mid June) to head to the coast. The group consisted of a couple english blokes and some nice young ladies from Nebraska. It was a fun crowd. The coast is about 7 hours from Oaxaca. Many people break it up by stopping half-way through in a small, magical town high the mountains called San Jose del Pacifico. San Jose was breathtaking, both ... read more

North America » Mexico » Oaxaca » Mazunte June 30th 2015

Buen dia. Ive been thinking of some of my favorite things and experiences of Mazunte. Ill be leaving probably tomorrow or the next day and have a lot of free time to reminisce on what Ive really loved here. Im gonna break it down. 1. Swimming everyday. At least once, probably twice. The waves are just big enough to be super fun to play in but not big enough to be dangerous. Go farther up the coast and they get big enough that people arent supposed to swim, only experienced surfers. These waves still get big enough though that if youre not watching, they can catch you can have you rolling up the beach. It was scary for me at first but once I realized they werent actually taking me anywhere, it was fun. Expcept for ... read more
