Die... read more

Wir sind heute Nachmittag an unserem 1. Etappenziel in Oaxaca, Mexico gut angekommen.

I don't know the first thing about parenting, but I can only imagine that years of dirty diapers, sleepless nights and spilled Cheerios can't begin to compare to the burden of having to explain to your child why all the other kids still have mommies, and why his had to die so early in her life. I recently lost a very old and dear friend who left her son here on earth, along with many other confused and sad people who loved her. Receiving news like this from thousands of miles away seems more difficult. The positive side is that the tragedy truly does bind us together. Through this horrible event, I have reconnected with some people with whom I may not have otherwise. Momma always told me to focus on the positive, despite how challenging ... read more

"Sometimes you're the Louisville slugger, sometimes you're the ball." -Dire Straits Sometimes you find yourself in the south Mexican mountains in a torrential downpour in the middle of the night with a landslide in front of you that just washed off the mountain and blocked the road. Then you realize another tree has fallen behind you and you're stuck on a small stretch of road with a few other vehicles, and must team up with other drivers using machetes to cut these trees up so you can escape; meanwhile rocks are falling and you're wondering if your car, which includes all your material possessions, will just sort of disappear off the edge. And sometimes you make run-on sentences with way too many commas. Then maybe you find peace at the local hotel with the first real ... read more

Thursday, 30 March Retrieving our rental car was relatively painless as car hire goes, and after 30 minutes we were off in our VW Jetta. The road rules are pretty straight forward and nowhere near as crazy as driving in Turkey. The motorways were packed in CDMX but before long we were on the toll roads for 450km to Oaxaca. The 6hr drive was very cool, with the scenery changing from agriculture farming land with horse and plough, to cacti desert, to forest, to high plateaus and soil that seemed to change colour every 50km. The roads were excellent compared to what I had expected and the driving was easy. Oaxaca is very cute and for the first time since we’ve arrived, it feels like we’ve finally arrived in Mexico. CDMX was very European but Oaxaca ... read more

Traveling down the road highway mex180 to Oaxaca with an unkown destination for the night. The roads surface is good by high mountain passes with winding roads makes a challenge with a big rig. The scenery was to die for , a little scary looking over the edge. First toll at Chiapas 100 pesos, 2nd toll 54,3rd toll 146. As we dropped elevation of 6600 feet more tolls 49 pesos then 117 pesos. Driving through fields of agauvi and many muskil processing plants . Day light was still in our favor as we discouvered our propane regulator had broke loose from all the rough roads. But this is Mexico and as usual in a small town just at sun down do we not find a small road side shop that had a flare tool and a piece ... read more

Huatulco, Mexico 19th January Mexico, sun, sand and Tequila - Margarita time Never called into Mexico and we will have two bites of the cherry. Huatulco is some 500 Km south of Acapulco on the Pacific side of Mexico. It is primarily a resort town centred around Santa Cruz and La Crucesita. The Mexican government looked for an equivalent resort to Cancun which lies on their north coast. Having never been there, no comparison can be made. Primarily Huatulco is just a resort, situated in the foothills of the Southern Sierra Madre mountains in the state of Oaxaca, it is made up about nine bays and plenty of beaches. We arrived into the bay of Santa Cruz on time at 8 in the morning. There was some doubt to our timings because we had an emergency evacuation of ... read more

Curaçao 14th January This has got to be one of prettiest approaches to a berth in the world.Docking right in the heart of the city of Willemstad gliding past the cruise ship Celebrity Eclipse berthed at the Mega Cruise Terminal, the Queen Emma pontoon swung aside to allow us access. The only downside was the passing showers that dampened the atmosphere. Curaçao is the largest island in the Dutch Antilles, its prosperity coming from it has some of the largest oil refineries in the Western Hemisphere. Tourism is its second largest earner with the mining company of Curaçao and the Antillean Paint Factory being quoted on the Amsterdam Stock Exchange. It was interesting when we berthed that the chimneys from the refineries were not belching smoke but when we left they started up with a vengeance. Neat little ... read more

Geo: 15.85, -96.32Well, we slept in AGAIN! Somehow the rocking of the ship justs lulls you into a deep sleep. But we do get up and start scurrying around because we want to attend the next Enrichment Lecture. We go downstairs for cups of fancy coffee and Jeff gets two mini-muffins.We arrive in the Princess Theater just in time for the "Plagues of the Modern World" lecture. Okay, I think this whole medical series is a little weird for a cruise ship, but it is fascinating! Today we learned about SARS, Aids, swine flu, and other diseases that have impacted the modern world. Of course, right now the Zika virus, a mosquito borne illness, is spreading and the areas we are visiting on this cruise are in the heart of the infection area. In addition to ... read more

Geo: 15.85, -96.32This morning we wake up to find ourselves in Huatulco, Mexico, on the 'Pacific Riviera.' (It is pronounced "wha-tool-co") We've never been here before, actually never even heard of the place. It's official name is "Bahias de Huatulco" or "Bays of Huatulco" because it is famous for having nine beautiful bays. You can reach five of the bays by road but for the other four, you need to have a boatWe get up early this morning for two reasons: 1) Jeff needs to call the dining reservations number for the reservation for the six of us to have dinner together tonight and 2) we are going on a snorkeling excursion! Today we will snorkel in two of the bays reachable by boat.Jeff successfully makes the reservations and we get ready for our excursion by ... read more
