First off, we’d like to thank our many friends who hosted us in Sunriver, Bend, Sisters, Vancouver and Tucson in September while we made the transition from our travels in South America to Mexico. We couldn’t have done it without you. We’re just sorry we couldn’t make time for everyone. What a long, long trip it’s been! We drove from Bend to Tucson in two and a half days, driving through Yosemite National Park. Spectacular scenery, but a bit crowded in the park and overpriced concessionares. While we were in Tucson visitng Rick and Anne, we finalized one of the two requirements to drive our car into Mexico - we purchased Mexican car insurance from a local agent. It’s not inexpensive, but it’s a legal requirement in Mexico. For the second requirement, a temporary import license ... read more

Guanajuato once a major mining town, nestled on hilly terrain is clean (they actually wash the streets everyday!), colourful and free from traffic lights and neon signs. (It was inscribed as a Unesco World Heritage site since 1988) Narrow cobbled streets leads you through many well preserved colonial buildings and in a tunnel under the city was where the bus dropped me at this wonderful place after a 5 hour bus ride from Patzcuaro. I went at the best time ever as the yearly Cervantino Festival, the biggest arts and music festival in Latin America was being held for the whole month. With the Cervantino festival on, Guanajuato was truly alive. I got a taste of the Cervantino Festival, when a clown jumped on board the city bus and started belting out jokes in Spanish. Although I ... read more

Yesterday my family picked me up and took me to where I will be staying. The family is a grandmother, her daughter, her grandson from another daughter and his wife and two sons. The house is very cuteand the family is very nice. I have my own room and bathroom in a little garden. There is another bed in my room, but right now I don´t have a roommate. I heard them talking about more people coming today, but I don´t know if one will be in my room. I really like the buildings here - well the three I have been in. I don´t know how to describe them. They don´t have very efficient use of space, but there are lots of patios and areas to just kind of hang out and enjoy the sunshine. ... read more

I´m here in Guanajuato. It´s been interesting so far. The way it looks is everything I imagined and more. The streets are very narrow and all made out of bricks instead of asphalt. The sidewalks are even narrower and a little scary when you´re walking on a curve and a big truck goes by. All of the streets are twisted and curvy and I only have a good sense of direction when I´m going in a straight line. I haven´t gotten too lost yet, but I haven´t ventured far from where I´m staying either. Last night for some reason I couldn´t get ANY money out of the ATM´s. That was scary because I was afraid I would be trapped in this country alone and without money. But I managed to find one that worked this morning, ... read more

Hey! wow now this is what I call a fiesta! Thanks to a few very organised friends we made it here in great time, stayed with some great people and avoided the exhorberant prices being charged at all of the local hotels. It is nearly law in Mexico to drink, drink fast and drink more than you can, which we did with great pleasure. Not a cent spent in bars though, this party was made for the street around the circuit used to channel the bulls through early Saturday afternoon. Yeeha! You may notice a distinct lack of photos of the actual bulls and those crazy enough to run with them, but I challenge you to fight your way through that crowd to get a good pic! It was jam packed, truly amazing! I was nearly ... read more

An early start for us, well comparatively, 5.45am to get to the bus terminal to catch the first of 2 buses today. Ditching the premium class for 1st - the only difference being that everyone gets to hear the spanish dubbed films, rather than on head phones - we head towards Mexico City. Once there it all comes back to us just how BIG the place is. Half an hour in a taxi to travel between north and east bus stations, and almost 2 hours from there before we were out of town. The 2nd bus took us safely to Oaxaca. The film that was being shown as we arrived was 'Hotel Rwanda', which probably influenced our first impressions of Oaxaca slightly. Everywhere was deserted and eerily too quiet, almost certainly because of the marauding ... read more

Our last day of school and all in all it has been a good experience. We can both contribute to conversations, Ed a bit more than Gemma but between us our next 3 months will be more enjoyable and we believe we are going to have a better understanding of what is going on around us. That is the hope anyway. Guanajuato is a town you can't but love, the atmosphere, character, setting and way of life. It has recently been designated as a World Heritage site and so the local authorities are going to great lengths and expense (world heritage status means lots of money), renovating buildings and streets. We truly believe that if you are going to make the journey to Mexico then a couple of days spent here will not disappoint (before ... read more

Any exciting news that we might have had of the everyday events that happened to us today have been upstaged. We need to tell you about the freak, huge, thunder and lightning storm that hit Guanajuato in the evening. It started at 4pm with grumblings in the sky and threatening clouds, but nobody seemed too fussed. 8pm saw eardrum-shattering cracks of thunder and a deluge of rain. It quickly cleared the streets of pedestrians. Unfortunately we had to make an extra effort to get back to the house because we'd made a specfic request for the evening meal. So we braved it. Within 2 minutes we were wet through, but this was just the beginning. It's a funny town with lots of steep, narrow roads and even narrower and steeper alleyways. Plus it's kind of ... read more

On such an important day it would be vain to go on about what we got up to. Particularly when it only involved sourcing a large cardboard box for our homebound parcel, and failing to find a bar showing England vs Macedonia (so putting up with France vs Italy instead). No, today was about absorbing the news that the electoral tribunal decided in favour of Felipe Calderon for president. The election had been tight so the left-wing loser - funny how that rolls off the tongue so nicely - claimed it had been rigged. He is talking of setting up a parallel government, and so having 2 presidents, which would obviously lead to chaos. Anyway, the point of writing this is not to get political for the sake of it, but rather to lead nicely ... read more

School, but you all knew that. What is worth noting is the fillet steak Ed had at 'Truco 7' for 65 pesos, US$6.50, about £3.25. Washed down with a glass of the house red. We had a happy, but more importantly, full Ed for a few hours. And we didn't even go over the budget for this pleasure. La mercancía debe ir acompañada de una factura pro forma. ... read more
