The inevitable has happened and the weekend is over; we're back in our routine of beginning lessons at 9am. Schooldays don't make good blog entries, so we won't go on just for the sake of it. Our day and our mood can be summarised by pointing out that learning grammar is boring. We made a bit more progress with getting our photos online, and did some planning of our upcoming whistlestop tour of Central America. We will be well acquainted with bus stations by the time we reach Colombia. Adios chicos... ... read more

We spent a lot of time today in the internet café, with Gemma spending many hours getting our photos online. It's still work in progress but for those of you who are interested - and we've had a lot of people suggest we do this - we should have details for how to view them on the blog very soon. Other than that, today was very similar to yesterday, with a big chunk of it spent trying to learn Spanish whilst sitting outside cafes. That's unfortunately very much work in progress too. The most important thing to record today though is that it's exactly 2 months since we left the UK. There's a couple of contrasting emotions, both a feeling that time is flying by (... we're a sixth of the way through our trip) ... read more

Despite what you may think, there really is little rest for us. Whilst you were all putting your feet up watching England thrash Andorra, we were hard at work trying to learn lists of Spanish vocabulary. The fact that we were sitting outside a café in the sunshine actually made it very hard to concentrate. In the afternoon we spent some time with a Canadian chap called Justin heartily criticising America. That last bit is actually not quite true, and was just for the benefit of Mark J-P's American girlfriend Katy. We hear that our blog so far has been a little USA-unfriendly, which is unintentional. We're penning a piece that expands on this for future blog posting, with the working title "Annoying North Americans (vb. not adj.)" In the evening Ed won junior Mexican Trivial ... read more

Being a Friday night after a tough week of school we decided to treat ourselves. So we - with our new friends and housemates Sophie, Toby and Rachel - started off in Guanajuato's Irish bar. Naresh and all the Irish will be offended to hear that their poster advertising Guinness had the slogan "The Head of British Intelligence" (unless there's a meaning that proved too subtle for us?). Then we ate in a great little French resturant with one of the best meals we've had in ages - 'Le Midi' in Plaza San Fernando. The owner, Veronique, spent a couple of years in the mid-nineties studying in Ed's hometown of Portsmouth. She worked in one of our old regular haunts, Rosie's Wine Bar. If anyone reading this happens to be in there in the near ... read more

Not a lot of much note today, hence the famous plagiarised newspaper headline serving as today's title. There's no connection whatsoever. Ed's teacher had hit the tequila a little hard the night before so she took him out for some breakfast for his first lesson. Later we went boozing, and got drenched in another great thunderstorm. ... read more

The morning, for the both of us, was again a brain buster of Spanish verbs and vocab. With Gemma learning about hobbies and how to say she likes things, in the 5 different ways! Ed learnt that even at age 29, teachers are still disappointed when you don't do your homework. After school our host family kindly took us on a trip to one of Guanajuato's old silver mines. Here we realised our competence in Spanish is not as high as we'd thought. The people we've been talking with so far are clearly making allowances for us (talking slowly and using simple vocab), but when it came to the guided tour around the mine we couldn't understand a thing. We also had a look at an exhibition of Spanish Inquisition paraphenalia, all of it very ... read more

More of the same today. Gemma learnt more verbs and how to describe herself and others. Ed learnt how to order food at a resturant and kept things interesting with elementary sentences about the Pope being muslim and Fidel Castro being dead. The teachers never know if you're joking. Today we both felt a little out of it, as we have a 300 steps walk up the hill from the centre of town where the school is. Of course, it's only the altitude that makes it tiring, and in fact Ed wasn't even tired at all and is actually thinking about running up them... maybe mañana. We are having to make this journey 3 or 4 times a day, with our food and shelter at the top of the hill and the school, centre and ... read more

Well while England have a bank holiday you will be pleased to know that Ed and Gemma went back to school! Once we'd discussed the best teaching methods for our needs we got stuck in and had the first lesson of our 4 hours per day. And that's not counting homework. Gemma surprised herself by picking up the verbs, words and accent in these few hours, a learning curve that could plateau early but so far so good! Getting off the mark with lessons worked wonders at the meal times and they were not so quiet tonight. We have to go now as we have homework to finish (actually Gemma has finished hers as she did it straight after school). ... read more

We remember what it is like to have a lay-in, which is fantastic and just get ourselves sorted for the week ahead. In addition to the two of us there are three others - Rachel from Switzerland (who's here for 3 months but seems pretty fluent already to us) and Toby and Sophie from England. These two are coming to the end of a 2 year trip away (1 year in Japan teaching and then working and travelling since). They have many interesting stories and are helping us understand Asia a lot more. We arranged a "family" outing to the cinema to see Miami Vice. While it won't get nominated for an Oscar, or at least we hope not, it entertained us for a couple of hours. The best part of the outing was going ... read more

First things first, to really start this Guanajuato visit off on the right foot we visited a café called Truco No7, for 'hueves Mexicana' (eggs Mexican style ie HOT). Ed has been thinking about this dish ever since we knew we were coming back here. We had it for breakfast in this very same café after a night out with James in Guanajuato in 2003. We remembered all the old haunts we visited! (In 2003 neither we nor James had mobiles and we hadn't made arrangements for a time and place to meet. But he knew we must be in town because as he was logging onto his hotmail account in an internet café Ed's name came up as the last person to use that computer. Freaky.) Guanajuato is an incredible place. If it wasn't ... read more
