What a perfect way to spend the weekend after midterms. We are now half way done with the program and after finishing two days of four hour long testing periods my whole group deserved a rest. This weekend in Guanajuato was a blast. My Sociology professor called this town the Disneyland of Mexico because it is so touristy and he was right, but that did not diminish the beauty and charm of this town. Granted, we could walk down the streets without worrying about cars, since the roads are mostly closed off to autos, all the while being serenaded by roving bands of singers dressed in black velvet outfits who we took to calling the ‘Capulets’. We stayed in a hotel for about six US Dollars per person per night and were able to spend ... read more

Ok guys, My last entry must have been really boring because nobody commented on it. I agree. I just reread it, and it IS really boring. I'll try to spice things up a bit. So this weekend there's a film festival in San Miguel and all of the shows are free to the public! The name of the festival is Expresion en Corto which pretty much sums it up. The films are all very short and it's all about expression and giving struggling filmmakers a place to show their work. On Saturday, I went with my other two housemates to Teatro Angela Peralta (the major theater in town) to see the documentary ¨Lost and Found in Mexico¨by Caren Cross. (Who, incidentally, we met the night before because her daughter runs a summer art camp for Amercian ... read more

We arrived in San Miguel de Allende on Sunday, 1 July 2007, and heaved a great sigh of relief. Before I get into anything let me tell you about the busses. The bus stations in San Luis de Potosi, Queretoro and San Miguel are very organized and clean. There are first class (these are the express which don't stop, get there faster and cost a bit more, they have TV showing, a/c and a toilet in the back), very comfortable and clean; and second class busses (which stop everywhere), have no a/c but are still okay. Both Upon entering you see all the counters for the different bus lines (and there are many). They have their schedules and prices on the boards behind them. We went there on Saturday to get our tickets but the ... read more

¿¡Como estan, amigos?!* I feel like today was a grand success. (Yesterday I took a two hour nap and stayed in my room all day, so it didn't take much to feel productive.) I went to my classes in the morning as usual. We had one of our weekly evaluations. Basically, just a one-sided quiz about what we're learning. No pressure. ¡It's wonderful! It's so much easier to learn when you can relax and only worry about your personal improvement. I'm starting to feel like I'm getting somewhere with my Spanish. Last night our ¨Senor¨or host father, Demetrio, started asking all of us gringas about what we learned in school. I think this is the father's role in Mexico, to quiz the children about their lessons. Or at least that's how it works in our ... read more

Howdy y'all! Boy does it feel good to be able to say that. Actually, the language aspect of the trip has not been that hard. People really do speak English here in San Miguel de Allende. My family speaks some English depending on who you talk to. Most of my host siblings speak English. There is Verona age 30, Cecilia age 25, Demetrio age 16, and Jone or Yone (?) age 11. My parents are very accomodating although there are clearly differences in communication. For example my host mother, Adella, is very blunt- she definitely gets right to the point. But she also has a softer side. My host father is rather friendly and I think he knows English but he speaks to us in Spanish. Verona, the eldest daughter, has a one year old named ... read more

As you can see from the amount of photos (and I only included 1/4 of them) on this entry, we had a fabulous time in Guanajauto. We would suggest this city to anyone traveling in Mexico. It has a little something for everyone!!! We started our day in the early afternoon from Chipancingo and traveled to Mexico City, approx. 4 hours, where we transferred buses, after a few hour wait, of course. We then traveled, approx. 5, hours, to the cobbled streets of Guanajuato. We arrived around 12:30 a.m., so besides the view from our roof top, we didn't see much else, but little did we know what Guanajuato had in store for us for the next couple of days. Gorgeous Guanajuato is crammed onto the steep slopes of a ravine, with narrow streets twisting ... read more

Mexico Trip 2007 Elizabeth MeekerSo, you're probably wondering why I wrote an entry more than two weeks before I left for Mexico. I'm just that excited!!! Apparently San Miguel de Allende is a hot spot right now. I've mentioned my trip to a couple of people and it's amazing all the connections I've found to SMA. My friend Doctor Wes told me about the program and I went with it. Never been there. Don't know anybody. It looks beautiful from the pictures I've seen on the internet. I really can't figure out where I got the courage to do this. I have to thank my brother. And Tia, for her absolute enthusiasm and encouragement. Everyone has been supportive, and I'm very grateful. I almost feel crazy for leaving all you wonderful family and friends behind! So ... read more

Hola All, For me to get out of my daily routine has been a wonderful experience. It really makes you pay attention to every detail when every street is new and every chance meeting an opportunity for a new friend. Finding a favorite bakery and restaurant was a lot of hard work but I persevered! I love La Grotta a lovely little Italian restaurant that plays live Jazz. It has the best pizza I’ve ever tasted. Gerard the owner makes a wonderful cheese cake too. He can speak very good English and often has a story to share with me. His wife owns a clothes boutique and they both teach the Tango on Friday night. I´ve also gone over the moon for the Mexican hot chocolate & fresh baked churros at a wonderful little café. The ... read more

After leaving San Miguel we headed up to Guanajuato (GJ) where the countryside is dry and desert like. We are in the north central highlands now and although the sun is as bright and intense as at the lower elevations the air is noticeably cooler. GJ is at 2017 meters, higher then Denver. This town of 78 thousand souls is stuffed into a ravine with steep sides with access roads leading into the terrain following the old mining tunnels constructed years ago. Coming into the city involves coming through these underground tunnels which are not well lit. Traffic in the city is one way with the return trip involving coming back through the tunnels. The net result is a town with very light traffic and a joy in which to walk. That is, except for ... read more
