Guanajuato, Mexico is a breathtaking state complete with rolling hills, vibrant cities, and picturesque landscapes. Its inhabitants value their culture, take pride in their history, and love their country. So why do so many of my students’ families leave their home in the hills to make a new home in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania? The answer is two-fold - to find work and to educate their children. This past summer I experienced Guanajuato for myself. After just one week in this beautiful state I understood why it would be so hard to leave and I learned why so many have to. Initial Learnings I arrived in Mexico at 1:30 in the afternoon on Sunday June 24th. My traveling companions (13 graduate students, two interpreters and one professor from West Chester University) and I were just in time ... read more

So yesterday was one of the strangest days at Casa Ayuda. It started off very fun and normal. We went to the ranch that Alicia’s family owns. It’s absolutely gorgeous. It’s set right on a river, which is absolutely beautiful. I waded in the river, some of the kids swam, we skipped rocks, we sun bathed. It was really a good time. Then we go home. There was a Guatemalan lady at Casa Ayuda, she was nice. She had lived in the US in Minneapolis (actually, it turns out right down the road from where my grandma used to live). She spoke broken English and wouldn’t speak to me in Spanish. I really had no idea what she was saying most of the time. Anyways, she is married to an abusive husband who is from the ... read more

I have been thinking a lot about how I feel to no longer be in school. I have been having a huge inner debate about whether I made the right decision in not going to grad school. There seemed to be a lot of unspoken expectations that the correct path after college (maybe not the correct path, but the only valuable path) was to continue in school. It has been so strange to be out on my own without any sort of limits or boundaries. I have a job, but it’s a job where I set the parameters, where I decide what I need to do, where I have no one to report too, no one giving me work. It’s a job where I am the director, president and staff. It seems I have jumped face ... read more

I had the kids over last night. ALL of them. We were 15 in total, ranging rom 5 to 22. My apartment is completly trashed, with crumbs, baseball caps, and little toys. It was a fun night. My neighbor who lives down stairs who is the son of the land lady and who is autistic ended up in my apartment beacuse the kids had the door open. It was quite a suprise, he ending up taking my empty box of Trix cereal with him. The night was fun, but it was certinaly different then what I was used to. The composition of the house is completly different than it used to be, most of the kids are teenagers. We have an 11 year old girl, two 12 year old girls and a 13 year old girl. ... read more

Well this is obviously my new trend to be delayed on my blog. So let me see…. I’ve covered Mexico City. Well after Mexico City just another passing week accept for one big thing. We had a big 80s party. It was great tons of people came and everybody dressed up. As seen in the picture we did 80s with a nice twist!! School thus far has been going well, the work is picking up but the learning/teaching style here is very different then that at school. The change is nice. My Spanish is improving, but I still get nervous sometimes when I speak but once I get into the groove it flows a lot better. I have noticed that my comprehension level is near perfect now, YAY!!! I have been taking salsa lessons amongst ... read more

Well.... I want to give everybody a little bit more information on GTO and then I'll blog about my weekend in Mexico City. Guanajuato, GTO is a SMALL town. I would have to compare it to a Moonville or Tryon in size. There are no stoplights, and the town was built before there were cars so there are now these crazy tunnels where they use to mine that cars now travel though. It is the only place in Mexico with tunnels like that. We walk just about everywhere and if it is dark or we are lazy we will travel by bus or by taxi. To travel by bus it is about 4 pesos or 4cents and to travel by taxi it ranges from 25 pesos (2.50) to 35 pesos (3.50). It is cheap but trust ... read more

I’m sitting in the spare bedroom, Segi is on my lap, and we’re listening to a party that has been going on since early this morning, since about 4. All of September here is pretty much a huge party. Yesterday was Independence Day, and let me tell you, it put the United States to shame (something that Mexico does a lot, actually). Maybe this is just unique to Denver, maybe it is different across the United States, but most of my fourth of Julys have consisted of barbecuing, watching fire works, and setting off fireworks. There never really included anything particularly patriotic, except for the few years I was the statue of liberty in the Southern Hills 4th of July parade (which, by the way, I hated). I can’t think of a song that I heard ... read more

I have a Min Pin puppy named Segi. He's really cute and I've had him for less than 24 hours. The poor thing can't control his bladder and he peed EVERYWHERE last night. I can't get a crate until monday, so I guess I'm going to have to "crate" train him with a box or something until then. If you have any words of wisdom for training a puppy, please let me know. As soon as I get photos, I will send them out. For now, this link is a pic of a puppy that looks a lot like Segi. Segi I had my interview with Rancho Labradores today. I think it went well, but I can't really tell. The guy who interviewed me was really interested in Casa Ayuda, as he works with a different ... read more

Relaxing days in San Miguel So, here we are, 3 months into our Mexico adventure and life is getting better each day. The weather in San Miguel remains perfect day after day. We still get light rain showers most afternoons, but it doesn’t last long, and keeps the place from drying out. We love the loud, earth shaking thunderstorms that keep us glued to the window in amazement, bringing that fresh, rain scented breeze into the house. Since the last journal blog, we’ve finished Spanish school, had a visit from Craig (fellow Oregonian / world traveler) and have had a change in our future travel plans. We have found life here to be very simple and if you look in the right places, you can find just about everything you need. One of the things ... read more

A list of funny stories I've been remembering about Mexico. If you're reading this, you were most like there when a few of them happened. -Being serenaded by Beto -Getting stuck in Callejon de los Muertos in the Pimp Mobile -Driving to Guanajuato in the Pimp Mobile -Getting a huge bug stuck on me on that ride to Guanajuato, and then getting lost in the tunnels under the city and reading signs like "If caught in a traffic jam, turn off engine, or risk possible harm" -Getting locked out and sleeping on the trampoline (multiple times) -Carmelo and his changing voice -My cat (may she rest in peace), how she died and how I came to know about it. -Getting caught and almost arrested on the Mexican side of the border for being an illegal. -Taking ... read more
