Fri: Returning to my pace I'm not sure if I was ready to go back to my pace yet. I was having enough of the nothingness but this plan came suddenly and all these planning felt stressful. But, it was time to move on. There is a lot to see in Mexico City and I decided to take the 8 am highway bus. Before I took off, I had coffee in the kitchen and chatted with the jefe and Frank one last time. They were super sweet. It made me sentimental :’(. Highway bus is just 50 pesos more than that snail bus I took on the way here. 3 bucks, no brainer! The only thing was that the driver was giving his family (wife and 2 kids) a ride to somewhere near Toluca. I guess, ... read more

November has started with a little jaunt to Guatemala, via Mexico City. We had an extra day off for Day of the Dead, and I decided to make the most of it in Mexico city. I arrived on a night bus at 3am, and was a little dusty round the edges to say the least! I lazed around in the coach station whilst using coffee shop WiFi or reading until about 6:30am. I then went in search of the Zocalo, which is a city square filled with architecture, shops, restaurants, etc that's in every Mexican city or even the little towns. I figured there'd be hostels near Zocalo, as well as it being a good spot for a little pre rush hour sightseeing. I love the idea of Zocalos; everyone knows where they are, there's a ... read more

CDMX You know you have been gone for too long when the city you were born in has changed it's name. Formerly known as "el DF " the city that saw me grow up has not only a different size, a different name but also a different vibe. It is almost impossible to imagine the size of such a metropolis until you are there to experience it yourself. Nadine's face was filled with a big question mark as we flew and flew and flew above Mexico city's airspace before we landed at Benito Juarez' airport, if we needed to describe the size in one word it would be, endless. Coming back to CDMX brings nice memories time and time again, it also reminds me how lucky i am to live somewhere else, don't get me wrong, ... read more

So the next trip is only 10 days away! I'm not sure where the time has gone, but I thought it must be time to update you all on the travel plans, and bring my blog back to life after a few years rest :) Next stop: Mexico city for 3 nights. After that? No plans! Jess and I are finally planning a trip together, after travelling together a couple of times in Asia. We do have a lot on the ideas list for this trip, but we will fill in the gaps and plan more of a route as we go along, leaving maximum flexibility for our travels, which is just how we like it. In Mexico we are heading up to the Teotihuacan ruins just outside Mexico City on our second day, as well ... read more

HE SAID... Today we were leaving Mexico City and returning to Australia. We left our incredible apartment at the Red Tree House in Condesa around 11:45am, jumped into a taxi and sped towards the Benito Juarez Mexico City International Airport, arriving at 12:15pm. After trying and failing a self-check-in, we checked in at the counter and made our way through to the gate lounge. Ren picked up a pair of Frida Kahlo Converse sneakers, and we used our last remaining pesos on a blue and white ceramic plate decorated with the ubiquitous Day of the Dead skull. We boarded our flight to Los Angeles at 3:30pm. I was one of six passengers from the entire flight to be randomly selected for a security check. It wasn’t too bad, although having to virtually take my top off ... read more

HE SAID... Today we were leaving Mazunte and travelling northwest to Mexico City. We woke early, as we had to carry our packs up the steep zig-zagging path to our hotel’s restaurant (La Fragata). We arrived exhausted, as the humidity (even at 8am) was debilitating, especially when you were required to exert energy. We dropped our packs, settled at a table overlooking the Pacific Coast and ordered breakfast. I opted for yoghurt and granola, while Ren had a sandwich de jamon y queso (ham and cheese sandwich). We refreshed with banana and melon liquados (smoothies). We checked out around 9:30am, bid farewell to our marvellous beachside retreat (Altamira Mazunte Bungalows) and spent the next 60 minutes bumping along Oaxaca’s narrow coastal roads on our way to Huatulco International Airport. We arrived around 10:30am, re-organised our packs ... read more

HE SAID... We have been in Mexico City for six days now, and today we were starting our Real Food Adventure of Mexico. We woke early to the rumbling sound of trucks and buses idling outside our hotel, and to the sounds of revellers making their way home from a big night out in Mexico City. Music had continued into the early hours of the morning, and we had drifted in and out of sleep all night. We worked on our travel writing while lazing in our room before heading out to our favourite bakery (La Espiga Panificadoras) for breakfast at 11am, which was just around the corner from the hotel. We both ordered omelettes with ham and coffee/tea, which was a fairly basic brunch by our standards, but I still had a stomach bug which ... read more

HE SAID... Today we were continuing to explore the wonders of Mexico City. We slept in for the second morning running, waking around 7am. We headed out at 9am, dropped our laundry off and walked to the Balderas metro station, which was reasonably close to our hotel. We bought our tickets, headed underground with thousands of commuters and jammed ourselves into a train to Chapultepec metro station. It was packed – people put their hands into my back and pushed me into the train. I was so compressed between everyone around me that I simply couldn’t move. I was amazed how courteous everyone was – the rim of my cap kept poking a guy in the head in front of me, and he just turned (as much as he could), smiled and said something in Spanish ... read more

HE SAID... On our third day in Mexico City, we slept in a little as our ‘Mexico City Markets and Food Tour’ didn’t start until 8:45am. We headed out at 8:15am and started walking towards the Zocalo, the heart of the city. We love being in a place as it slowly wakes, regardless of whether it’s a large city or tiny village. Our first stop on the tour was the Teatro del Pueblo, where we briefly gazed at a number of murals on the ceilings of the lobby. We then walked to Mercado Abelardo Rodriguez (known as the Murals market) and made our way upstairs to view the powerful and haunting murals of Marion Greenwood (which were painted in 1935). We were drawn to a section of the mural where indigenous workers were holding up a ... read more

HE SAID... Today we were leaving Antigua (Guatemala) and flying to Mexico City. We woke early, organised our packs and walked to Fernando’s for breakfast at 7am. I ordered fruit and granola with yoghurt, while Ren opted for an omelette with toast. My cappuccino was fantastic, as was Ren’s fresh pineapple juice. We had a long travel day ahead, and we were not feeling 100%%, so we wanted to be well nourished for the trip. I walked to the post office to send a few postcards (to Australia and the UK) before dropping into Me Latte Caffe for a cappuccino on my way back to the hotel. Our airport transfer arrived at 10:30am, so we checked out of Hotel Posada Los Bucaros, loaded our packs in the minibus and drove through the bumpy cobblestone roads of ... read more
