The Templo Mayor was the main temple of the Mexica people in their capital city of Tenochtitlan, which is now Mexico City. It was dedicated simultaneously to Huitzilopochtli, god of war, and Tlaloc, god of rain and agriculture, as well as to Quetzalcoatl in his form as the wind god, Ehecatl. According to tradition, the Templo Mayor is located on the exact spot where the god Huitzilopochtli gave the Mexica people his sign that they had reached the promised land: an eagle on a nopal cactus with a snake in its mouth. The temple was sacked and destroyed by the Spanish in 1521, and the Mexico City cathedral was built in its place. The Templo Mayor was partially disassembled to be used as construction materials to create the Spanish colonial city. In 1978 electric company workers ... read more

Mexico City is very large and thus difficult to accurately describe. It’s not only the capital of Mexico and the country’s largest and most culturally important city but also the most populous city in North America, the sixth-largest metropolitan area globally, and the largest Spanish-speaking city in the world. Originally built around 1325 as Tenochtitlan on a group of islands in Lake Texcoco by the Mexica (Aztecs), it was almost completely destroyed in 1521 and subsequently redesigned and rebuilt in accordance with Spanish urban standards; as of 1585, it was officially known as Ciudad de México (Mexico City). We stayed in the Historic Center (Centro Histórico), which has a lot of the best sightseeing but is not necessarily a favorite tourist base; I noticed rave reviews for the Roma and Condesa neighborhoods, which are more upscale ... read more

When we travel we like to ride bikes. Mexico City is a great bike riding city with lots of bike lanes and a large park to ride in. Chapultepec Park was walking distance from our Airbnb in Condesa. We went looking for bike rentals. We found a bike rental in the park that rented bikes by the day or half day. They do not rent helmets and the bikes were old. Many locals rented here. We also found ecobici in the park and near our Airbnb. We registered with ecobici and downloaded the app. We kept getting an error and could not rent a bike. These bikes look in pretty good shape. They are used by locals to commute because you can pick them up at one locked bike stand and return them to another bike ... read more

We signed up for a cooking class in Mexico City. Gary (my cousin on my Mom’s side) and his wife Jennie joined us. I booked the class through Viator. There were two different classes advertised, I chose the class walking distance from our condo. There are four friends who are vacationing together and the four of us. After introductions we walk to Mercado Medellin. The large indoor market has individually owned booths that sell produce, raw meat, seafood and flowers. There are also restaurants and vendors who sell fresh juice. The freshly squeezed orange juice that is sold in markets, from street vendors and at restaurants is so good. I order orange juice multiple times while in Mexico City, I never do that at home. Before we enter the market we stop and try some street food ... read more

We are in Mexico City for a month. Christopher and Brad came to visit for five days. Gary and Jennie came the day Brad and Christopher left so we had company exploring the city. Brad spent months here ten years ago and Christopher and Laura were here last year so they both had places to share with us. Mexico City has a great food and drink scene. Christopher had a list of world class bars for us to explore. We headed out on foot. Two of the bars are walking distance from our condo. We start with hot chocolate at La Rifa a chocolate bar. You order your hot chocolate based on how much cocoa you want. Mark had 50% with milk, I had 70% with milk and the boys had 70% with milk. Christopher ordered ... read more

During all of our travels over the last 20 years, we have always strived to do more than sightsee, and truly experience the culture of the places we are visiting. What better way to become fully emersed in the local culture than by the food they eat? Today, was a day devoted to total emersion in the food of Mexico. But first, alarms went off at 5:30, sounds early, but I had the best night of sleep since I can’t remember when, so getting up was not so difficult. Besides I got to finish yesterday’s blog have some coffee and watch the sun rise over the National Palace and Zocalo. They were also raising the flag for the day. We started our food emersion with breakfast in the terrace restaurant. Breakfast is included in the room ... read more

This entry is actually being done on the 26th, after the day of travel I was in bed by 9:30 and exhausted. The day started very early, we were up at 4:30 and at the gate by 6. In hindsight we could have probably slept another 45 minutes, but you never know what the lines will be like a Newark Liberty Airport. The airport was packed, I think many travelers did what we had done and came down the night before to insure they made their connections. The weather was a bit cold and freezing rain. It delayed our flight by about 30 minutes as all planes had to be de-iced. That is not a comforting thought for me, I don’t like flying that much in the first place, but add an extra procedure and my ... read more

Many Americans enjoy turkey, stuffing, and pumpkin pie on Thanksgiving. My family and I, however, enjoyed Mexican food as we traveled to Mexico during my Thanksgiving break. Ever since Chicharito waved at me at a soccer game, I have acquired a love for Mexico-the country even being my second favorite national soccer team after Brazil. But anyway, the first night we stayed in Mexico City with my dad’s friend, Ralph, and his wife and son, the latter of which has an impressive collection of soccer jerseys. We arrived later in the day, so we walked a bit to a restaurant for dinner in this large sqaure to end the night. The next day we drove to a town called Tequisquiapan, but before that we visited Teotihuacan which I think is a very fun word to say. ... read more

Guest bloggers Catherine and Louise Benjamin Schliemann had put together a rather ambitious touring program of which we almost managed to tick everything off aided by Marco our competent driver First stop barrio of Coyoacán - home to Leon Trotsky, Frieda Kahlo and Cortes. Clashing opinions over the optimal route ensured Wilko with his trusty map and Chris ‘never been here before but know the way’ Never quitefound Cottes house, then came across a very colourful building with hundreds of people waiting around the outside. Much ‘discussion’ as to what it was but the bright cobalt blue colour should have given it away it was Frida Kahlo’s Casa Azul ( blue house in Spanish) a must see in Mexico but a 1 1/2 hour wait in the... read more

Today we decided to walk up to the Archeological museum, Catherine's sister Louise and her husband Benjamin are arriving from New York. Breakfast was something I can't remember the name of with beans and ham and cheese in a hollowed out bread role with a hot salsa on top. Wilko took over directing with his trusty map and before you knew it we were confronted with an 8 lane expressway with a 6 foot wall that needed to be scaled in the middle. Wilko and I made it across in a daring run leaving the girls on the side of the road. While we waited a Mexican guy came up them and told them it was really dangerous to cross here (no shit Sherlock) and showed them where the crossing was. We were on the perimeter ... read more
