Vanuit campeche vertrokken zonder te weten waarnaartoe. Katrien zegt: Let's hit the caraibian sea. Tom zegt: Let's go to the deep south. Luka zwijgt.

... read more

Oh how to find the small villages of Mexico. We didn’t have a map. We didn’t have a guidebook. We didn’t want to go to any of the places listed on the hostel bulletin boards or tongues of other travelers. So we consulted the giant cartoon bus map at the ADO station! It had the usual tourists map symbols for restaurants, airports, ruins, and activities, and next to the lonely city of Xpujil, there were none. It must be the small village we are searching for, especially since it’s in the general direction we want to travel! Angela asked the bus ticket guy if there were hotels in Xpujil, if there is anything to see, and was it cheap there? Since this was a small village in another state about 5 hours away, that’s like asking ... read more

Palenque, Chiapas, a 13 de octubre del 2009. Saludos family.

Saludos a todos(as).

Our journey to Xpujil (shpoo-heel) was absolutely first class. We commissioned a tour outfit to drive us from Campeche and show us ruins along the way, as an alternative to yet another day on the bus. First stop was Ednza (en-za). Without a doubt, one of the biggest and best restored sites we've seen on the trip. One feature that really stands out is how much open space. Another nice thing was that there were perhaps a half dozen people scattered amongst the massive area. Restoration work is ongoing, so we were able to peek in on some of the actual effort that goes into shaping a grown over pile of rubble into the impressive pyramids and complexes that make up the ancient Maya cities. To date, much of it is done by hand, one brick ... read more

Okay, this entry is a couple days late but we've been really busy and haven't had a decent Internet hookup until today. We left Merida on Monday because that's the day that most shops and major public buildings close to the public. So though it dashed our hopes of seeing the archaeology museum and having some kind of urban adventure, we were eager to push for the coast and some highly anticipated beach time. On the way we went through another military checkpoint as we crossed state lines, but the soldiers were really just going through the motions so I have a sneaking suspicion that my zip-tying our bags shut was a tad over zealous. One soldier was more interested in his Blackberry, to give you an idea. My first impression of Campeche was that they ... read more

May 1, Friday Another pack the bike event, this time with lots of extra clothes aboard, and we headed north from Playa del Carmen looking for the cut-off road to the west so we could miss the snarl and mess of Cancun. After a short back and forth, we found the proper road, which looked originally like an entrance to an amusement park. This short cut began as a brand new blacktop road, and we whizzed along with almost no traffic. When we reached about 5 kilometers from the next main highway, the construction vehicles showed up, then the road turned to "under construction", then to gravel, then to dirt. It got narrower and narrower, and I started wondering if we'd have to backtrack the 20 some odd k's and go the long way around. Finally ... read more

February 16th, we left beautiful Isla Aguada and moved on to the city of Campeche. We would have liked to have stayed at Isla Aguada a couple more days but a 17 rig Fantasy caravan had rolled in. Since we all are following Mexico 180 and there are only a few campgrounds, we wanted to stay ahead of them. Again, we are glad we are not traveling with a group like that. One of the caravaners told me that many in the group had gotten upset with two rigs because the drivers had gotten lost. The rest of the group was required to wait half an hour for them to catch up. There goes the myth that folks participate in these caravans for the camaraderie. The roads were good and most of the drive was along ... read more
