There is nothing like a great hotel to get your new town off to good start and Hotel Lopez did not disappoint. A newly renovated hotel in the historical centre of town that offered a great room with air conditioning and most importantly a pool. The historical district is a picture perfect area of Campeche with its multi-coloured buildings and its quaint tree-lined zocalo. Campeche was an important stop on the trade route between the new world and Europe and as such was not immune to the odd pirate attack or two during its heyday. Due to this the city has 2 forts on opposite hills about 4 kilometers from the centre that overlook the area and kept watch for those pesky pirates. On one day we headed out early to go to one of the ... read more

We decided that we would get up early and travel down to Campeche, a walled, colonial city to the south, before driving back to Merida. There are two choices to get there: the "short" road and the "long road". While the long road looked interesting and not much longer, it was explained that there are hundreds of "topes" or speed bumps on the long road. We took the short road. However, as we found in Ticul earlier, road signs are not always there to help you...we ended up turning too soon and found ourselves passing the ruins of a great hacienda, followed by a small village. We got directions (I don't think that the older man I spoke to had ever conversed with a tall gringra before...), took a few photos, and found the right road. ... read more

I had a rubbish night sleep in the cabin. It rained so much that I started dreaming about a landslide taking away my hut into the river. I even got up to check that the water hadn't risen up too much. It hadn't risen at all. I suppose, to have such vegetation, they must be getting a fair bit of water falling from the sky. So I eventually woke up for the final time at 5.40 and thought I might as well get ready. I was stressing about the buses, after having been told by one local than they ran every hour and took 2 hours (I knew that was wrong as it's more like 6 hours to get there), another who wasn't sure but thought they only ran at night and the last one suggesting ... read more

Hola, We didnt do much in campeche except eat breakfast on the rooftop and watch street vendors setting up before heading to the bus station. The bus to Palenque took a while, but we had movies (dubbed in spanish) to keep us occupied, e.g. Star Trek and confessions of a shopaholic. There were gappers on the bus, 4 of which were aussies which we bumped into over the next few days as well. Had a chat and they-re on a 27 day trip with gap adventures. Finally we got to palenque and grabbed a colectivo that heads towards the ruinas of palenque (ruins) but got dropped off at a place called El Panchan, a family run area of the jungle with cabanas, dorms etc run by different members of the family so you can choose your ... read more

An easy bus ride south and we arrived in Campeche, a beautifully restored walled city on the coast of the gulf of Mexico. Our plan was to chill out in a nice hotel with a swimming pool etc, this was our last few days of our holiday and we were going to enjoy it We had a lovely time in the Ocean View hotel, we enjoyed lazing around the pool and even had a couple of workouts, which my body continually reminded me about. The Mexican bicentennial holiday period was in full swing now, lots of free festivals and a great party atmosphere, things were going well then…. As we were catching an overnight bus to Mexico City Sharon checked online for any government warnings, I didn’t mention it in previous blogs but a few night ... read more

(Day 776 on the road)After ten days in Mexico now, I finally feel that I have arrived. The first few days here had felt a little surreal somehow, but now that I have seen a bit more of the country and its people I got a much better feel for it. It just feels great to be in a completely different region of the world again - after almost 18 months in (south-east) Asia and and then six months or so in mainly western countries (Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and the US), I am ready for some different experiences. New cultures and everything that comes with it await. How very exciting! As with most countries that I go to, I had very little real knowledge about Mexico, apart from the usual information one gathers over the ... read more

As our bus to Campeche was due to depart until 12 we had a fairly leisurely start to the day. A relaxed breakfast sampling the never ending supply of tropical fruit provided by the staff, a prolonged visit to the internet cafe downstairs and a final pack in our room. We took a taxi to the bus station were soon settling onto our comfy Primera Plus bus. The bus trip wasn't too long and by mid-afternoon we had arived in Campeche, taken a very short taxi ride to our 'Pirate Hostel' and dragged our bags into reception where we were greeted by a skeleton in a pirate's hat and a room full of seafaring memorabilia. After a couple of minutes we were also greeted by a member of staff who showed us to our room...across a ... read more

We pulled into the large clean Campeche bus stop just after sunset, and right outside the front doors we found two friendly and helpful cab drivers. They decided between themselves where the best hostel in town was, and asked us to hop in the back, they knew the way! Our cab driver navigated the busy and narrow streets like a pro and zigzagged back and forth until I was wondering which way was up! We then pulled into a magical lighted square in front of a postcard pastel cathedral, and he pointed at a welcoming staircase. Our hostel had incredible views of the lighted cathedral and park square, had free internet, and cost only 100 pesos ($8USD) a night! Angela and I immediately hit the streets to find food and beer. After a quick study of ... read more
