Our main reason for stopping over in Toronto was to take a trip to see the Niagara Falls and we weren't disappointed. Picked up at our B&B by a 14 passenger van about 9.00 am we made an hour and a half trip to a winery then stopped at the old historic town of Niagara On The Lake. The van took an anti-clockwise route around the western end of Lake Ontario on a fairly busy highway to get to NOL. After a half hour wander around Niagara On The Lake we drove on the the Falls. Very impressive! Took the "Behind the Falls" walk and were quite close to the edge of the falling torrent as the river plunged down 114 metres - loud and wet. Pat & I had some lunch - it was ... read more

Wow it is amazing how quickly the date for leaving is coming up. I will be flying out of Pearson and flying via Italy to Accra. From there we will head north to Tamale where I will meet the long-term volunteer for more specific training. The pre-departure learning is intense and am living with 26 people. I have learned so much and find myself reflecting on the many changes that I have made. As a group, I am noting how much our skills are growing. The issue of poverty is so complex and I am finding that some of the absolutes that I thought I had are far more ambiguous. We had Ghanian food last night for the first time. There were many items I really enjoyed and some that will take some getting used to. ... read more

Up at 8am, in the car by 10am, broken down by 12pm! We didn't exactly make it very far out of Victoria before there was smoke billowing out from under the bonet of our Toyota 'Rent-a-Wreck'! So we pull over, inpect the damage and make a knowledgeable decision that the car was in desperate need of some water! So we fill her up, wait a couple of second for the engine to cool and carry on our happy way! After some worrying chugging noices, more smoke and some concerned passengers we pull over for a second time at a very conveiently placed Car Body Shop. As we pull up, and jump out we summonded the help of two guys working on a car! We lift the bonnet to let the engine cool before attemping to ... read more

Treena has been in here in St johns for 3 days now, and this is my second. Yesterday we finished putting our bikes together, pumped up the tires, Treena popped one of mine, and went for a short, but brilliant ride along the coast and up through some hills. The bikes worked great, and the legs and lungs seem to be functioning pretty well. Today we set off for a beautiful 3 hour hike along the East Coast Trail that startetd at the lighthouse at Cape Spear and brought us back to the house we are staying at here in Maddox Cove. We are staying with Shelley and Bern who have been incredibly accomidating. Its been nice to sleep in a real bed, and have real meals, while trying to figure out my jet lag. ... read more

UntitledGeoff Burt On our second day in Toronto we took the plunge and hired a car to drive north. Driving on the "wrong" side of the road took a deal of concentration, with Pat doing some exquisite white knuckle work on her seat. David would be interested to know that we had a Pontiac Impala - sorry silver Pontiac Impala. After battling the Toronto suburban traffic we headed north on National Highway 1 - called Highway 400 in this part of the world - and stopped in a town/city called Barrie for a coffee etc. We think the traffic problems are bad in Melbourne. Nothing compared with urban Toronto, especially in the CBD. Barrie is about 110 km due north of Toronto. We wanted to look at the lake in that part of the world. Lake ... read more

Chapter 4: Genesis: ch2 v5 “ and Homer was bound and gagged.” Homer got home that night and threw himself around his plush suite like Audrey Hepburn having a conniption fit. He took a moment to grin at his spectacularly feminine actions (which weren’t really his style being a hardware store CEO) then continued his weepy ballet until he was exhausted and flopped on his queen-sized bed. After lying with his arm over his face and tears streaming from the corners of his eyes for fifteen minutes he hit the mini bar. Hard. In an hour he had it emptied and he sat, stomach churning, staring at 36 tiny bottles of assorted alcohols. He looked at his hands, the hands that had typed the proposal for the hamster maze that had helped Bros.’ get back on ... read more
