Since last night was the solstice the guys went to the top of the hill (called the dome) at around 10:30 to see what the city looked like from up there. They thought they might stay for sunset but decided they were too old to stay up until almost 1:00 am. Joe did take some great pictures though. This morning the guys went to check out the riverboat Keno and tour a gold mine dredge. Joe said the Keno was not as impressive as the Klondike that was in Whitehorse. They toured dredge #4, but decided it was too expensive to do any panning for gold. This afternoon Joe and I went into town to do some last minute shopping and get gas. Gas prices are still way too high so we sure will be glad ... read more

It rained most of the night and was still raining this morning, so we were very glad we did the walking tour last night. While the rest of the gang toured the town today I decided I needed to stay home and rest. Joe took awesome pictures of the city and everyone seemed to enjoy their walks about town. After dinner we all went to Diamond Tooth Gerties to do some gambling and watch the dancing girls show. Ron was picked to go on stage and dance with the "girls". His reward was a garter he had to take off one of the girls leg.. It was a total riot to watch. When we came out of the show at 9:30 pm we were literally blinded by the bright sunlight. Sunset was a little before 1:00 ... read more

A Klondike Nat'l. Historic Site, Dredge #4 was the largest wooden hull, bucket-line dredge in North America. It is 2/3 the size of a football field and 8 stories high with a displacement weight of over 3,000 tons with a 16 cu.ft. bucket capacity. It could dig 48 ft. below water level and 17 ft. above by using hydraulic monitors and washing the gravel banks down. In gold rich areas is produced as much as 800 ounces of gold in a single 24 hour day. It was built in 1912 and operated from 1913 to 1941, was disassembled, moved, re-assembled and operated from1941 until 1960.... read more

The journey today took us off the Alaskan Highway and onto the Klondike Highway. We were not sure we were going to go this way because we had heard rumors the roads were very bad. After talking to several of locals in Whitehorse that travel the road frequently we decided we might as well try it. Everyone we talked to said we must go this way as the scenery from Dawson City, Yukon to Chicken, Alaska (Top of the World Highway) is spectacular. The road thus far has not been too bad except for the potholes Joe got very good at dodging. A few construction point, which were dirt roads, so washing the trucks in Whitehorse was truly a waste of money. The wild flowers along the road are called Lupine and look just like out ... read more

As I said earlier yesterday the guys went to the transportation, SS Klondike and Whitehorse Weather Vane. I finally took the time to download all of the those pictures. Today we had a very easy day. We ran a few last minute errands this morning in preparation for leaving Whitehorse tomorrow. We have decided to head north to Dawson City, Chicken (Alaska) then Tok. It's supposed to be the most scenic drive in the Yukon. We did hit Starbucks this morning since it will be probably a week (Fairbanks) before we see another one. Joe took the dogs for a walk down by the Yukon river this afternoon and took a few great pictures. A fish ladder is something that helps the fish to make their way through the areas of the river which are flowing ... read more

It's Day 3 on the Ranch. We arrived safely in Whitehorse and stayed our 1 night in town. We got picked up at 9am by Danielle and arrived at MUKTUK ADVENTURES!! It's been an amazing experience so far. There's 120 dogs, the youngest litter is 7 months old and are all named after treeish things, like Aspen, Cedar, Pine, etc. The oldest is 17, and boy is he old. Can barely move the poor guy, but he gets around. They're so cute. I want them all. We do a few jobs with split shifts so we have a bit of down time - housekeeping from 8am-1pm then 5pm-7pm. and Gardening from 8am-11am then 4pm-9pm. It's been interesting, and everyone is really nice. Theres about 8 other volunteers and a few full/part timers, 2 aussies, a lot ... read more

While the men checked out the SS Klondike (paddle boat) and the transportation museum, Caroline and I went shopping down town. Whitehorse has a lot of quant shops and we even bought a few things. While we were out we decided to do our grocery and Walmart shopping so tomorrow we can rest and do nothing. Tonight we had dinner at the Klondike Rib and Salmon and then went to a vaudeville show called Frantic Follies. It was a lovely evening in Whitehorse with friends.... read more

We discovered a Wildlife Preserve today, so we spent about 2 hours there. As you can see from our pictures there were a lot of great animals to see in their natural environment. After the wildlife park we had lunch at a little café called "Bean North". It was a local coffee shop that made great sandwiches, too. After lunch we headed to Takhini Hot Springs to soak our tired muscles. It was really nice to just sit and relax in the 108 degree water. It even rained pretty hard on us, but it felt to refreshing.... read more

North America » Canada » Yukon » Watson Lake June 14th 2013

We headed out towards Watson Lake bright & early this morning. Along the road we finally spotted a black bear in time to take his/her picture. Shortly after we saw the bear we come upon a bison. He wasn't too cooperative so I only got his butt. About an hour before we arrived in Watson Lake we saw two wild horses just grazing along side the road. As you can see from the picture, they didn't even take time to look up. In Watson Lake there is an attraction called Sign Post Forest. At this place you can hang any sign you want and there are signs from all over the world. They even have a place where you can make your own sign for a price. Given the prices of everything else in Canada we ... read more
