We left Dawson City relatively late knowing there wasn't a lot to see at Carmacks. The weather was superb to start with then clouded over a bit. We stopped briefly at Stewart Crossing so the bikes could fuel up then carried on to Pelly Crossing where we had a coffee. Seemed like an odd town with not a lot going for it. Once we got to Carmacks we fuelled up and had a wonder around the shop. The accomodation and restaurant were really good. Much better than when we last stayed there. Only drawback was some very loud drunk people fighting outside at stupid-o'clock. This morning we prepared for the long (and sometimes rough ride to Watson Lake. We headed out around 8 with 583kms to ride. The weather looked sketchy and as we didn't want ... read more

We had a lazy day. Walked downtown for a late breakfast, then wandered around the shops & bought some supplies. This whole town including houses has been kept as authentic as possible to retain an 1800s feeling. It has all been done very well including keeping all the roads as dirt roads. Elevated board walks (necessary in winter) complete the picture. Many museums etc give the whole place a great feel. Back to our miners tent and we shifted rooms (due to our last minute decision to stay an extra night) a few domestic duties (washing etc) then we walked up the road to watch 4wd mud racing. This consisted of racing in 2 dug out trenches around 100m long, both filled with slippery watery mud. Quite entertaining with the sound of V8s revving to unbelievable levels - ... read more

Ok, we left Fairbanks heading south after we had repaired and serviced Trev's BMW and fitted new LED headlights to all the Harley's at Jerry Summer's, Thunder Road Cycles. Gerry and his team were such a pleasure to deal with. The ride down from Fairbanks to Cantwell was uneventful apart from a great lunch just before Nenana. We checked out the old Railway town of Nenana after lunch. Some of us stopped at Denali for some coffee and a look around, every thing here was pretty expensive, and sorta like Queenstown as it just caters for tourists during their short summer. The place is abandoned during the frozen months of winter. When we reached Cantwell and our pre booked cabins at Bluesberry Lodge, they were not ready for us. Some of us never got our rooms until ... read more

We seem to be waking early, probably because it's light at about 4.40am and will get lighter as we move north. So, we moved off from Dease Lake through the mist at around 7am and stopped at Jade City - which is actually just a tiny dot of a village - for a bite to eat and stretch our legs. There were huge boulders of jade everywhere. I found a small bit but Trev wouldn't carry it (too heavy). From there we pushed on for another half hour and ran into String and then Jack (from our group). We then road together and crossed the British Columbia/Yukon border before stopping at Teslin for a buffalo burger and some coffee. Once fueled we made the final push to Whitehorse where we'll settle for the night. Now you ... read more

Ride Day 10: Left Haines Motel stopped to Gas up where a local told us that just seen a Grizzly feeding her cubs at a river 4miles out of town. Even though it was in the wrong direction we headed out to take a look. Unfortunately no bears but we saw Bald Eagles fishing Salmon out the river – so worth the trip. Back into town and onto the road heading for Kluane Lake via Haines Junction. To make a change it was cold raining & we were gaining altitude. We stopped at mile 33- coincidentally at the 33 roadhouse. A hearty breakfast & a couple of coffees warmed us up & we headed for the border crossing another 20kms further on. No control here for people leaving the USA but about 30kms in “no-man’s land” ... read more

Day 7 (Non riding rest day) Spent in Watson Lake. Small town of around 1500 people. Stayed at Airforce Lodge (now privately owned by a German, Mike- who has been there for 19 years & now regards himself as a Canadian). Did some maintenance on the bikes including oil and filter change. Checked out the towns sign board display (started by a homesick GI during WW2), then lunch at B Js truck stop and later dinner at the the Dragons Den (Chinese of course) followed by a film session at the Northern Lights Experience - all about the Aurora Borealis. Very spectacular film & domed ceiling screen but incomprehensible explanation about black holes & the Aurora - maybe Steven Hawkins would have got but it was over our head (pun intended) Riding Day 8. Friday, Saturday and Sunday were spent in Whitehorse .... known as the Gateway to the Yukon. As capital of the Yukon, it was the largest city we have been in during this trip. The population here is almost 27,000. We left Watson Lake early on Friday morning for a fairly easy drive. Other than being very windy, the roads were good and little or no construction delays. These will most likely be the best roads we will be on for a few days. We made a few stops along the way, one for gas and a small wildlife exhibit, and another short stop as we crossed the Continental Divide again. We also crossed back and forth from the Yukon to British Columbia a total of seven times. We are camped at Pioneer RV Park ... a ... read more

Welcome to the Yukon! We were up early and on the road again. This time we traveled 184 miles to Watson Lake. We had a couple of stops planned, and oh yes, more road construction and plenty of narrow mountain roads. Our first stop was at the Liard Hot Springs. Jim decided to take a dip in their 120 degree springs. His comment as he entered the water was that it wasn't warm, it was HOT! I opted to take a few pictures instead of getting in. (Boy, you could smell the sulpher ... remember the old chemistry labs in high school?) Back on the road, always looking for more wildlife. So far we have seen plenty, including black bears, mountain sheep, caribou, and today we came across many bison. So many in fact, that we ... read more
