Our darling little baby girl Megna was born on June 14th 2005. We were very happy parents enjoying her sweet little face, chubby little fingers and cuddly little body. But we somehow felt that we needed a break from parenthood; not that we spent sleepless nights each day. We just felt that we needed some time to ourselves, like a mini honeymoon. So we planned a trip to Quebec City during the Labor Day weekend in September. We got a really good deal at the Hilton and the hotel was located in an excellent spot, within walking distance to old town as well as new town. The Hotel was right adjacent to the Parliament building of Quebec. We had driven in our Nissan Quest watching movies throughout the 7 hour car ride. But once we got ... read more

Bonjour!!! Our week in Montreal has been great.... Just out of camp where days and nights off are limited and it's difficult to coordinate to have these days with your friends, we're now altogether in this beautiful city. Eight of us left New Hampshire on Sunday (28/8), four of the girls, Jenny, Katie B., Katie D. and me in Jenny's car, and the 4 boys; Andy, Ali, Irek (only came up for the first night!) and Mark by bus. Lee and Jess M. came in another car on Tuesday as did Rowan, Remy and Doughty in Doughty's car. Then Jess B. joined us on Thursday and there is Emma who studies in Montreal so in total we had 15 staff members there at some point during the week!!! It was hectic and noisy, which was much ... read more

Ian, Darcy and I have earned reputations for ourselves since leaving Regina just over a week ago. Since leaving I have spent a night in a farmers field with horsies in Portage La Prairie, had red wine poured into my mouth as I lay drunk on a tarp beside a fire in Thunder Bay, taken off my shirt and performed the chest dance in front of Darcy's relatives at a wedding in Tommogammi, witnessed the world's greatest light and sound show on Parliament Hill in Ottawa, and Fought the tail end of Katrina the mother Hurricane in Montreal. St. Jerome, QC- 10:04 PM- I have been overwhelmed by feelings of inadequacy since crossing over into the Quebec border two days ago. Inabilities to perform the simplest tasks due to my non existent knowledge of the French ... read more

Un spot ... read more

On a rainy Saturday, August 20th, we drove north from Burlington, Vermont to Montreal. When we crossed into Quebec, suddenly everything seemed French. There were little stone cottages with the curved roofs, road signs in French only, and casual care of the roads. They did not give out free maps of Quebec. They are for sale in the gas stations. Rather than buy one (since we were there a little more than one day), we "fudged it ", with a bike road map and maps from the USA (which of course do not show you much of the roads in Quebec). We went through Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, and by Canal de Chambly, (somehow), where there are bike paths along many roads. We ended up in Boucherville (by accident). But here serundipity took over! Boucherville was the most charming, ... read more

"Welcome to Quebec, the Nation's Capital" read the sign from the bus. Well this was news to us; here we were thinking Ottawa was the nation's capital. It turns out that the Quebecoise don't like being a part of Canada much. You can kind of understand the logic behind this though. Journeying through the province of Quebec would be the equivalent to stepping onto a plane and travelling to France, but much cheaper. Montreal and Quebec are amazing cities, so if they choose to cross out the 'Canada' on 'Canada Post', let them we say. Montreal The downtown area is split into two halves: 'Ye Olde Towne' and 'Ye Neked Dancing Girly Towne'. Both had their merits we suppose, but the Olde Towne offered us a bit more. I am leaving with my friend Michelle in exactly 2 weeks! I am so excited! We are going to Europe for 5 weeks, visiting France, Italy, Spain and Germany. We'll be staying in hostels and it will be my first backpacking experience. I'm anxious but very excited! I think this will be a life changing experience for both of us! I have no idea how it's going to be, if everything will go well but I know that whatever happens, it will be for my own adventure and I will learn from it!!! I will keep you posted on this site, that way you'll be able to see where we are and what we are doing.... read more

August 14 Montreal We have the car until this evening so decide to explore some of Montreal. Drive through town to Isle ...... to the Olympic basin and the Gilles Viilleneuve Grand Prix circuit. For a modest fee of 10 dollars you can drive round the circuit. Despite the speed limit of 30 kph it's still exciting. We provide the sound effects of squealing round corners ourselves. Stop at the basin and park the car. From there you can walk up the starting straight and through the pit lane. Boys not as impressed as I am. Back in the car and we do some more of the circuit. It's not very wide and some of the barriers look as if they have seen better days. Stop again and walk to the large framework sphere that was ... read more

August 1 Montreal Everyone is still up when we get back. Discover it is Andy and Elaine's wedding anniversary. If we'd known we'd have brought wine, drink more of theirs instead. Boys straight back in front of the TV. There has been a new addition to the family while we've been away. Now in residence is a tiny hamster. Back to the basement to find that now only has our white washing been done but it has also been ironed - luxury. August 2 Montreal Sleep in while Steve takes the car back. They charge us for the wheel trim we scratched on a granite curb. Next time we'll choose a car that is less posh. Alloy wheel trims are expensive to refurbish. Trip to the supermarket where I experienced my first 'car order'. You do ... read more

Hey all, So we are trekkin around at the moment. We crossed Canada, at least 5000k's in 2 and a half days. Fun huh? All this on a Greyhound bus.......... So Canada is a lot like Australia, lots and lots of flat, flat, flat farmland. The biggest difference is the colour. It is all so green out here, green, water and swamp. On the bus we went past a Bison reserve and I saw a herd of wild bison, Bec was asleep. We stayed at a really hippie hostel last night. Groovy man (but how do you say that in French?) We are in Quebec at the moment. All the roads signs and tourist info and everything is in French. In the rest of Canada everything is bilingual - but not in Quebec, only french here. ... read more
