After breakfast we gathered for a talk focusing on Canadan history through the lens of diverse peoples, each region with their own unique history, and the importance of the transcontinental railroad which linked the political and economic development of Canada as a nation. This excellent overview gave us background for the learning over the next eleven days. Next was an architectural walking tour of Old Montreal over cobbled streets with stops at the Notre Dame Basilica, Place d'Armes, Place Jacques Cartier and lots of historical information along the way. After a huge lunch we had "free time" so we headed to the Chateau Ramezay, the 18th century home of the first governor. The museum artifacts and multimedia exhibits showed how Montreal and the building changed over time, who lived there, and introduced historical figures from various ... read more

After posting the last blog I discovered that I had totally forgot to address our time in Quebec. Talk about brain dead. So this is my supplemental to rectify that oversight. We were in Quebec for 2 days, 3 nights. We enjoyed the city immensely, smaller and more quaint than Montreal. But we were still frustrated by the whole shroud of French that existed, especially in the signage, both public and private. But fortunately language didn't end up being an issue at all. On our first day (Saturday) we toured around the city, visited the few antique shops we could find (didn't find many and NO train shops!) and had lunch at a pretty good restaurant. On Sunday we thought we'd take advantage of what we hoped would be an off day to take one of ... read more

9:00 am: Up early to finish packing, ride to the arport in Margaret's truck, almost empty airport with no lines at the American desk and in the tsa check-in line. Sylvia and Mark just showed up. We are ready to go. Montreal: After a two + hour layover in Chicago, we had an uneventful flight to Montreal. Easy walk thru immigration and customs, found an ATM. The taxi ride into the city with a very chatty driver took us through suburbs, then past nice homes and finally condos and apartments before arriving in the central city. Our hotel tonight is in the Place des Arts district full of theatres, restaurants, lots of people walking around. We walked into Chinatown down a shop-filled alley, ate a delicious dinner at Restaurant Beijing on advice from a nearby shopkeeper. ... read more

Even though I wrote about the Agawa Canyon Scenic Railroad in the last blog, I came across this picture that really shows the beauty of the train and the scenery it travels through. So I thought I would include it in this blog. After leaving Sault Ste. Marie (SSM), we headed east toward Ottawa. Enroute, we stayed one night in North Bay, located about 250 miles east of SSM, before heading on to Ottawa. During the drive between SSM and North Bay, we passed a Huron Central train pulling a long string of steel coil cars west toward SSM. There is a large steel mill in SSM (Essar Steel), so I'm sure the cars were heading there. North Bay also happens to be the headquarters for the Ontario Northland Railroad. Saw a few of their locomotives ... read more

WE are now in Quebec. Yesterday we entered the St. Lawrence Seaway and arrive at Quebec about 1 pm. It is grey and overcast and chilly with a high about 65 degrees. Some of our fellw travelers are upset about the weather. You cant complain about the weather though when you travel. Well you can complain but it doesn't change anything. So anyway here we are in Quebec. It is supposed to rain all day long. Perhaps this doesn't bother us as much since we cant get off the ship anyway. We have a very good panoramic view of Quebec from our room. We have been to Quebec many times. It is a beautiful city especially the old section. The Chateau Frontenac commands a spot on the high bank and makes a beautiful impression. The Citadel ... read more

... read more

I am sorry but we are so busy that I do not have time to keep up this blog. We also have such poor internet at the campgrounds, when we have it, that it is an exercise in frustration to try to do anything. This is one of the better campgrounds that we are at, but with 100 of us trying, the wheel just keeps spinning, going no where, so with luck I will publish today. We are having fun and the car is running well with only a couple of minor glitches. There are some blogs that other people, more devoted than me, have published. There is one on facebook - Saskatchewan coasters and some on the canadiancoasters.ca that you may wish to check out. Today we took a bus tour from our campground into ... read more

My final 2 days in Canada are coming to an end! I've got a flight at 5:25 AM tomorrow, which means I've got an airport bus to catch at 4 AM. Fun fun! I've come to the conclusion that the woman from Saturday afternoon was right, for the most part: Ottawa is more work than play. It's not that there aren't fun or interesting things to do around here. It's more that the things that are fun or interesting are not exactly exciting. At least my experience affirms that. Of course, at a different time of year or whatever, it could be quite exciting. But that's not my story for the past 3+ days in Ottawa. The past 2 days included getting some rest (much needed!) and spending the majority of my touristy time at museums. ... read more
