Well, I thought I would give the travel blog a try before embarking on my Indian journey just to say hello (and goodbye) to all of you and welcome you to this big step out into the world that I have decided to make. For those of you who do not know, I am leaving in 5 days (ahhhhhh!!!!!) to spend 4 and a half weeks in India. This will be my first time traveling out of North America and, really, my first travel that is not explicitly vacation oriented. I decided to travel to the Asian subcontinent when my good friend, Abiramy, asked me to come to her wedding in Tiruchirapalli.... from there the travel plans have been expanded and I will be voyaging from the far southern province of Tamil Nadu, all the way ... read more

Yeah so I made it here...bit of a strange place. First the airport Immigration officer spent 25 mins with me, 23 of which he told me what I should do in the 23 hours I had in Toronto. He recommended hotels, casinos, Niagara falls, places to eat, even hinted at a strip bar before stamping my passport and telling me to fuck off. We also had an argument about how Argentina was on the west/east coast of South America. I was right so he got pissed off.. I then decided the airport was too crappy to sleep in, absolutely nothing in it, so got a bus, which suddenly stopped and dumped us on a train to the city centre. City centre = high rise buildings + noshopsfoodplacesoranyothersignsofcivilisation. After walking around for a bit, and chatting with ... read more

Well here it is, after a year of planning, saving and general plotting, we are in north america on the mother of all road trips! And talk about a baptism of fire.....I'm writing here on our second full day and already we've climbed and eaten at the CN tower, the tallest building in the world, been to Niagra falls and travelled to Ottowa! I am currently recling here in 30+celsius with a cold beer at Mike's aunty's house, which is to be our home (albeit temporary) for the next two nights. Over the next six weeks we will all try and log on and give stories, anecdotes and pictures of our trip to keep all you guys informed and also keep a record of our trip for posterity! So far, our trip has gone like this....... Fri ... read more

Saturday already? Time flies. Three hours of sleep, and I am stumbling to breakfast. This is also the second morning in a row that I see the WRock boys going up to bed as I go into breakfast. I remember that lifestyle- not sure I want it back for more than a day! Or four... Susan and I managed to talk through our first presentation, but caught a few good ones later. The talk on JKR's literary influences was interesting but dry- I hate when presenters just read their papers- and Philip Nel's talk was awesome. He talked about the movies and why they worked or didn't. I would love to be in one of his classes! Alas Kansas is far from California. The Fandom Panal Keynote was very fun. Maybe because I recognized Paul, Steve, ... read more

I bounced out of bed with 4 hours of sleep, and discovered the blood red hair dye I used was still leaching. Sorry Sheraton Centre about the pink towels. Breakfast was pretty chill, and I spent the morning at different talks. The first was about Teacher -Student Worship in the books, and I appreciated the chocolate attached to the hand outs! I made the Steven Vander Ark talks a priority, and the 10 am one was about The End of the Tale. Entertaining as always, but he ran out of time! He finished during the 5 pm slot though, going through each book and discussing what we had learned and what didn't make sense. The 11 am No Wizard Left Behind discussion was scattered but interesting. The presenter is emailing the questions to us to consider ... read more

We survived the epic journey to Toronto and arrived at our new home, a lovely little flat not far from the downtown area - best of all, it had a TV and fridge full of food and wine (we are staying with family!) so we made ourselves at home pretty quickly. We only had a couple of days in the city and we managed to get down to see Lake Ontario and go up the CN Tower to admire the views. One section has a glass floor so we were very brave and had our photos taken laying down on that - it is only 2.5 inches thick and about 100 stories up in the air! After that, we went about 2 hours east of Toronto to stay at the cottage that my relatives have up ... read more

CN tower was geweldig.

As may be obvious from our location we have arrived back home in Canada (well Sarah and I have, Jeff is spending a few weeks in Europe). As I promised everyone has returned alive and well. After 22 fun filled hours and 4 airports (why did we have to fly to Montreal first?) we are happy to be home. My "back to reality" moment came quickly upon our return when I ordered a pint at a pub in the Montreal Airport and the bill was $9.31. Only the day before we were paying about the equivalent of $1.25 for a 500 mL bottle of Tusker Lager in Kenya. At least the beer (and coffee) is better here. Overall an excellent experience and we are all looking foreword to boring our friends and families for the next ... read more
