Hola chicos and chicas, just a quick entry to say hello and let you all know that I finally found some salmon (which has already come and gone...), which I'm sure you're all extremely excited about. Went and bought myself some ice hockey skates today, as the ice skating rink between work and home opens on Friday. Got inspired after watching an OHL game here in town between the Kingston Frontenacs (I don't know what that means exactly, but their mascot is a pirate) and the Ottawa 67's (I don't know if they even have a mascot...). Turns out the local guys suck, losing 5-0 after making the brilliant move of taking off their goalie to put an extra man in offence. The other team then proceeded to pot two goals FROM THE OTHER END OF ... read more

When it gets to the point that Christmas carols are sung to the tune of 'T.N.T.', then I have had enough of AC/DC, Australian though they may be. They seem to love bogan rock here in Kingston, or maybe it's just the radio station I have to listen to at work. I've heard more than my fair share of AC/DC, Guns N Roses, Warrant and other long-haired poodle rock types. The funniest one was the T.N.T. song performed live in the Kingston Christmas Parade -so sad, yet so highly amusing. 'Santa Claus - ho, ho , ho .... Santa Claus - ho, ho, ho..." Getting closer to Christmas, but with very little of the white stuff in sight. It's not that it's not cold enough (it was zero at noon yesterday), but it just ain't falling, ... read more

i didn't realise that I hadn't put on any of the pics from before Vancouver, so I'll delve into the hard-drive and see what I can find. (it turns out, only two pics taken from my hotel in Tai Pei). Canada continues cool and damp, with a deluge expected to run/ruin the entire weekend. Bring on the snow!... read more

Hola mi chicos, just dining on some Pop Rocks, awaiting my dinner (for those not in the know, Pop Rocks are also known is Oz as Magic Gum - hahahaha remember that Chez? - and as the urban myth goes, will cause your insides to explode if consumed with cola soft drinks). Have finally got the internet hooked up at the apartment, so I can start uploading my Kingston photos, to give everyone an idea of where I live, and what life is like here (suspiciously like Melbourne, but with more snow). It did snow today - for about all of 2 minutes, but hey that counts in my book. It's funny how quickly one acclimatises to the cold. Now it's like "hmmmm, balmy and three degrees above zero - time for a t shirt". Waitied ... read more

The Americans have shown their true colours yet again (red, white and stupid) by banning Vegemite. I don't get it, they'll let innocent children eat MacDonalds, yet interfere in a minority of Australian adults in enjoying a good slice of Vegemite on toast every morning??? Obviously it's been deemed too healthy by the FDA, and stands to embarrass the American Cuisine (what an oxymoron) Administration or whatever. Home of the free - forget about it... Anyway, that's my rant for the day. Anyone looking to send aid packages (i.e. Vegemite, not currently banned by the conservative but sensible Canadians), please address them to: Emily, Apartment #3, 23 West Street Kingston,ON. K7L 2S2. Still not in the apartment - apparently due to painters this time...*sigh*. Living in one of the apartments next door, yet to be renovated ... read more

...which is a nice change to freezing cold. However, it doesn't help me in my new job (I have switched the part-time food store job for a full-time outdoor gear store job - I want the staff discount...), as it's damn boring when no-one is around. I'm spending my spare time learning all the technical mumbo-jumbo that comes with ultra-nylon-hyper-Goretex-thermo-dynamic whatchamacallits. Today was only day one, but it seems like a nice enough place - packed to the rafters and basement with stock, and even better - the managers wife works at the local Mars factory, so there's always lots of goodies on hand for the boring/hungry moments. Still waiting to move into the new apartment. I guess the downside of having a newly renovated apartment is the fact that every man and his government-service-provided dog ... read more

Hahahahaha, surprising, eh? There was probably some snow at some point last night, but all traces were gone when the sun came up this morning in my new home town of Kingston. Walking from the Post Office to the library, I was caught in a sudden fall of hail, or as I euphemistically term it small round hard SNOW! Hahahahaha, geez I'm so Australian, just the thought of snow is so novel to me that I get excited, whilst all of the locals are just bitching about the cold autumn weather. Thanksgiving was as to be expected - a public holiday based on gorging yourself one day and eating the leftovers the next (we're still working on the leftovers actually...). Halloween is rapidly approaching, and with it the arrival of cheap CANDY! (yay). I'm not sure ... read more

Odometer: 39300km Up with the neighbours and their bloody TV. Oh joy. There was no solution but to get up and leave. I packed up, making as much noise as possible, wiped down the dew on the bike and headed off to breakfast. The dew down here is incredible. In the mornings the bike looks like there has been a full fledged prairie rainstorm overnight. At Tate's Bakery, THE place to go for breakfast in Brockville, I talked to a group of cyclists who were carbing up for their day's ride. They were travelling from Halifax to Toronto and were nearing the end of their trip. I asked them how they kept safe on the roads in Ontariio. What I had seen were roads with no paved shoulders, a lot of traffic, and an exceptional number ... read more
