We reached Oswego NY and raised our masts in 100F temperatures. An already long job took extra time due to frequent cooling rests. The folks at Oswego Marina are skilled, friendly and welcoming. The sort of place that gives marinas a great name. Our trip across the lake was uneventful....a good thing, but it was a motor trip...and we had so hoped to sail. People were apparantly watching for us to go through the basqule bridge in Kingston. As we passed through and turned towards the marina we heard horns blowing, saw people along the shore and observed others heading to the marina gas dock. They all showed up at the gas dock and again at our temporary berth. Never have so many people gathered to watch us dock. It would not have been a ... read more

July 17 - Kingston, Ontario Canada - A short entry...It's Sturday night and we made it back. The flight was pretty uneventful, but the security at Toronto seemed heightened. They were looking for someone coming in on our flight from Paris. We arrived back to a 2 hour power outage here in the Bayridge area of Kingston. Our bathroom reno's progressed well while we were away although not finished. It looks amazing! Hopefully they'll knock the rest off this week! So now we sleep! Hal and Sherry... read more

I sit amongst a cluttered house full of boxes, garbage, and furniture, waiting on the correct days for removal of all the recycling I've found after a 7 year military posting to CFB Kingston, Ontario. For the past 8 months I have been patient, but with time dwindling away, I see myself in the beginning stages of panic, attempting to iron out the last details before I drive 3500 kilometers to my newest place of employment, CFB Suffield, Alberta. Kingston and Suffield share very little in common, aside from the already known military presence. Kingston, rich in culture and diversity, was Canada's first Capital and home to the prestigious, and quite expensive, Queen's University. It also plays host to a large number of federal penitentiaries, holding our country's most notable criminals within their bars. Several times ... read more

It has been 6 months since returning home after the Water Adventure. Life has more or less returned to normal after a long, hard period of adjustment. I am once again becoming comfortable with the difficult business of everyday life. The stress of returning to work, dealing with pressing family issues, finances, moving into a new home and juggling extracurricular activities has begun to subside, and in the coming months I should be able to focus on kicking back and relaxing.....before planning the next big thing. In the meantime, this is the first of a few announcements coming up this fall/winter. "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Oceans: A 46,000 Kilometre Sailing Voyage Around the Planet" As you might have suspected, the Water Adventure had some fund-raising objectives, and I'm happy to announce that I'll be doing a ... read more

Kingston is a lovely town about 3 hours south east of Toronto. We enjoyed a delicious german meal there, and the next morning Darren visited the former home of Canada's first prime minister, Sir John MacDonald, known as Belluvue House. This home is a very impressive Italianate abode. Then we left for Toronto airport, driving in heavy rain for much of the trip. ... read more

While looking over the Rideau Heritage Canal website, I discovered that a local pub, the Kingston Brewing Company, gave tours of their brewing process. So, I contacted the KBC for information regarding the brewery tour and was told the brewmaster was on site between 7 - 3, a tour would last about fifteen to twenty minutes, no appointment would be necessary and there was no admission. Fantastic! So that Wednesday we bundled up the baby and headed downtown. Upon arrival at the pub, we seated ourselves and were promptly greeted by a pleasant staff member. I explained I had called about doing a tour around 1pm and she went to get the brewmaster. The location itself is downtown, near the waterfront (a prime tourist area) on a side street with a small hard top notice signage. ... read more

Hi all This is my last blog for this trip - apart from when I get home and put a few photos on . Tomorrow evening I fly back home from Toronto and will be back at Gatwick on Tuesday morning. These last few days have been a nice easy time - no big drives or spectacular scenes - but some lovely local walks in Conservation areas - one was by Lake Ontario to savour the last colours of fall. Also I met up with an old friend and work colleague, Elisabeth, from when I worked in the Psychiatric Hospital here - we hadnt seen each other for 35 years - so that was a lot of catching up to do and we said we looked the same - but different hair dos and a few ... read more

Hi all Now that I am in Kingston in one place for a week I have got computer access so I can get up to date. Re- the bear paws - no I am not going around killing bears and cutting their little paws off ( with my Swiss army knife) - the bear paws in question are salad servers made from lovely Canadian cherrywood - we saw them out West and of course I didnt buy them there cos I though "I am not carrying them all over Canada with me"- but attempts to find them in various places in Ontario failed ( although last of the big spenders -I did get a butterdish - that's another story!!). But today in a lovely gift shop in Kingston i found them at last. On Saturday I ... read more
