Hi everyone! We are sitting in an internet cafe in Osborne Village in Winnipeg. We slept like rocks yesterday after driving 700+ km from Sleeping Giant to Winnipeg. We' re staying at Ivey House HI Hostel in a cozy (yet very stuffy) room. After storing and drying gear, Cissi & I went for Ethiopian food at Mazzawe (THANKS TERESA!!!!). The veggie platter was so good and filling. It was Cissi's first time eating Ethiopian, so she had fun eating with her hands! The weather has been back and forth rainy and sunny. Our driving days are dry and our hiking / non-driving days are rainy. But we endured through it all and enjoyed every minute of it! Killarney was scenic on the short hike we went on (wet rocks though). Lake Superior was crazy windy and ... read more

Odometer: 41800km I went to bed hot and clammy and woke up freezing. Good grief, it was only 5C above this morning. The fog was heavy and the bike was dripping with condensation. I hesitated for a moment, but I really had my mind set on travelling west, so I headed out. The first hour on the bike was not fun. I was wearing just about all the clothes I had with me in order to stay warm. My fingers were numb from the cold and I couldn’t keep my face shield clear of condensation without opening it a bit and freezing my chin. The fog in the low lying areas was thick and I could hardly see thirty meters in front of me. Thankfully there were hardly any cars on the road so I could ... read more

Hello all. The weekend just past, on Saturday July 1st was Canada's 139th Birthday. So in celebration of this 3 day weekend Chelsea, a bunch of her friends and I went to spend it at a lodge on a lake in the middle of no where. After packing the truck and cars we headed off for the 4 hr drive to 'Long Lake' in Nopiming Provincial Park. The last hour of the drive was along dirt roads and we made the mistake of not closing the external air inlet and so arrived at the lodge completly covered in dust. The cabin was awsome, right on the lake with no view of any other inhabitants, complete with its own dock and sun deck. The fact that there was zero electricity and that we relied on kerosene lamps ... read more

Hello everyone. Let me just say that the whether this time in Canada is much much better. As you all know I left Germany on the 19th of this month for a little solo adventure and things are going swimmingly. I spent 3 nights in Montreal, the bi-lingral French/English speaking part of Canada in the province of Quebec, and had a very different experience to that John and I had 3 months ago. Its a shame i didnt get here a week later cos they where setting up for a massive jazz festival and i think there was something to do with the F-1 racing about to appen. Met some cool single serving friends and had a few nights on the town. The second night out and English bloke and i held the pool table at ... read more

My journey across Canada has continued eastbound to Manitoba, first setting foot in Winnipeg. Nothing immediately grabbed me about the streets of this city, so I found a donut shop and ran my finger down my list of nearby hostels. Most hostel owners seem to find locations nearest bus stations, which I greatly appreciate considering my map reading skills. I circled the winning write up, and set off. Within a few moments I did a couple of backpacking pirouettes on the street just trying to confirm the right direction, and was quickly approached by a local laughing at my dance moves. "Unless your heading towards the polar bears in Churchill, you'll find the hostel is actually right behind you" declared Paul. The sidewalk directions were followed by suggestions for a cheap place to eat and a ... read more

Waiting for the train Spent lots of time at the Forks Train to Edmonton. I didn't have too much planned for today since the "main attraction" of getting on the westbound train towards Edmonton wasn’t to happen until about 5PM. So Natalie, Laura and I took our time packing up our stuff and having a leisurely breakfast before heading over to the train station to check in our bags. At breakfast we chatted up this cool retired couple from New Zealand. They've been travelling around Canada and the US for almost five months now. They bought a used camper van and have logged about 27,000 km so far on "Kathleen." They started in Calgary and did a lot of exploring of Western Canada up to the Yukon and Alaska then back down the west coast down ... read more

Long walk to the zoo Bears, cats, birds & kangaroos Chilly out but nice. I decided to change my plans today and go to the zoo with Laura as opposed to checking out the Manitoba Museum and the Planetarium. We left around 11:30, after a leisurely breakfast and walked for a good hour before coming up on the zoo area. It was a little chilly out but not too bad once we got walking. You should have seen how red my cheeks got...perma blush. haha. It was pretty quiet at the zoo. There were perhaps six to eight cars in the car park? Walking around to the different pens it was almost like we were the only ones in the zoo besides the people working there. I'm not the biggest fan of zoos, looking at caged ... read more

Day two in Toba Another day in the Peg Easy Peasy day. I had a leisurely morning at the hostel since I made plans to meet up with Marnie, Brooke and Erin for lunch and they were going to be picking me up at the hostel at about 11:45. The thing is, once again I woke up super early this morning...6AM! I think with the time change on the weekend and then another one hour time change coming into Manitoba has really done something to my internal body clock. Must think it's 8AM. So I lay in bed for at least an hour listening to music before I fell back to sleep. When I woke up next it was about 9:30 which I thought was a decent time to be waking up. I ate my raisin ... read more

Haiku mental block Recovering from train ride I'm in Winnipeg. I thought I'd start off with sharing my horoscope as read in today's newspaper. Pisces: "Your ambitions are really growing. (You've noticed.) You've got big plans about publishing, the media, travel, education and moving on in the world. Today is a good day to talk to the head honcho. People are very impressed with you now." I always get a good laugh from reading my horoscope. So who is the head honcho? Would that be God?? Anyhoo, I made it into Winnipeg yesterday afternoon about 4PM and considering I was on the train for 32 hours from Toronto not expending a whole lot of energy I sure did feel a bit drained! lol I can't get a train ticket out of Winnipeg to Edmonton until the ... read more
