Aaah, the memories. I lived in the Peg for about 15 years. It is my second home. We are staying with our good friend Moe, the best hostess ever! Thanks Moe! The "essential experientials" I needed to do so far (a nostalgic quest) are: 1) Go into Prairie Sky Book Store on Westminster Ave and smell the air while browsing the new age books and looking at all the pretty imports and semi precious stones. 2) Walk down the block and buy 1/2 dozen cinnamon buns from the Tall Grass Bakery (no preservatives, and whole wheat!--this means they ARE good for you! haha) 3) Hang out at the Forks, watch the city squirrels, pigeons, take a stroll around to see the sculptures and murals, watch a magician in the centre market, (or musician), buy some farmers ... read more

We left Winnipeg for our morning show in Anola. We traveled to Selkirk for lunch at Barney Gargles, then enjoyed a show in Selkirk where we had one of our biggest audiences of the provincial tour. Tomorrow’s a day off, then we start the longest adventure of the tour: the northern leg.... read more

Well today has finally come and we're stoked! Both Candace and I have saw the kids and animals off to her Mom and Dad's and we were finally alone for our last night in Manitoba. Instead of getting any sleep, we both rushed around the house checking and re-checking our back packs to make sure we didn't forget the little we were both taking. By the time the alarm went off, I think I had gotten 4 hours sleep. A quick call to my Dad to make sure he was up and on his way to our house to drive us to the airport and the rechecking of the bags began again. I'm not sure what it is about the incessant need to confirm you have underwear but I'm sure someone must have crossed the world ... read more

Day 27: We landed in a hunters’ camp just to the east of Thunder Bay, Ontario, with a room in a dorm-like cabin. Since it was pouring rain and getting dark, we decided to stop at 7:30 p.m. and call it good. We both woke up today to the fact that this is an immensely wide continent and that we have to keep driving to ever get across it. That said, we almost decided to take a day off in Thunder Bay to reward ourselves for such dedicated driving. Lake Superior is aptly named. It seems as big as an ocean and twice as beautiful. Absolutely a superior lake! Jule had decided there was likely to be a ferry across, but this proved to be another example of what Anita calls “Jule's unbridled optimism.” This meant ... read more

I only had a few hours to discover Winnipeg. We arrived late one night and the next day I got up to a sunny morning. I stepped out of the hotel and soon discovered why Winnipeg is known for it's wind. I stood on the kerb to cross the road and literally got blown from one side to the other. Glad at that point I hadn't styled my hair in any particular way as it ended up in a huge beehive in front of my face!!! Indeed, the intersection of Portage and Main, in Winnipeg's downtown core, is known as one of the windiest spots in Canada. As I had no map I wasn't wandering in any specific direction - I just left the hotel, looked around and headed towards the most fancy building I could ... read more

Winnipegging Part 2 - 21 August to 31 August 2007 Chela's family keeps a cottage on the shores of Betula Lake in the Whiteshell Provincial Park. So, after sending a resentful Alice the Cat to Grandma's, we packed up the Jeep and headed off to spend a few days lazing by the lake. The day was overcast so after arriving, we went off to see the Nutimik museum. This is basically a small room filled with native animals unfortunate enough to die from a rare condition that turns their insides to stuffing and leaves their corpses frozen in dramatic poses. There we found a great albino beaver, as well as a massive sturgeon fish. We also checked out some (Canadian) Aboriginal rock arrangements known as petroforms but the rain kept us from sticking around for long. ... read more

Winnipeg - 10 August to 21 August 2007 We've spent the last week and a bit in Winnipeg, adjusting to the time-zone and enjoying the sunny, but mild weather. Chela is very happy to be back in her home away from home with her Grandma and her aunt MJ (yes, that's Mary Jane) and Matthew has now met everyone and is approved of! In our short time here, we've noticed a few things about Winnipeg.Winnipeg is a small, flat city situated in the middle of Canada. It is surrounded by the prairies that stretch through central Canada and the USA and are mostly farmland. It is common to see round bales of hay sprinkled around the place and one of the more random sights we came across was a ramshackle old farmhouse in the middle of ... read more

Sydney to Winnipeg - 6 August to 10 August 2007 Oh Canada! After months of planning for it and weeks of getting ready for it; we are finally in Canada, our home and native land (of sorts). Our day of departure began with little sleep and phone calls at three in the morning to discuss what essential items to eliminate from our bulging packs. Before too long, thankfully, we were boarding our plane and preparing for a mammoth flight to Vancouver via Honolulu. The novelty of drinks carts and personal TV screens was enough to keep Matthew occupied for most of the flight. Chela on the other hand, had little use for these as she promptly fell asleep and dozed on and off for the remainder of the flight. Chela is quite a talented sleeper and ... read more
