After almost a week straight of rain we woke up to sunny skies this morning. Wanting to take full advantage of this day we decided to head to Stanley Park to explore. We arrived at the front of the park at about noon and walked for about four hours. We walked around forever looking at random beaches and lakes. We even stumbled upon a couple teams playing cricket which for the aussie I was with was the highlight of his day. After trying to explain the game to me for many months with diagrams I still wasn't getting it but after seeing it i'm kinda getting it now. I took some pictures that i'll put up after I write this blog. I'll put up a couple new vancouver pictures and the last of the lake ... read more

The Swans are truly beautiful. I have so many wonderful pictures to share with you... and I want you to see them all! The gray one is the yearling... we call him Austin. We think that the white one is his mom. I don't think I got any of Austin's dad this time, but I will post some I took last fall here a bit later. Young swans are gray. As they reach maturity, they become the white trumpeter swans we are used to seeing. (Just so you all know, we are feeding them peanuts, one of their favourites.) ... read more

Another delightful part of Stanley Park is Lost Lagoon. The area is known as Ch'elxwa7elch in the local first nations' language (Coast Salish). The area of Lost Lagoon was shared by many of the first nations in the area as a gathering place for mussels and other sea harvesting. The rights to the harvest land is passed from generation to generation through marriage and inheritance rights. "If you didn't have direct stewardship of a place and you didn't have access through kinship you just weren't going there," Miller said. "The key word is protocol; you could get access to these places but you have to do the right things, talk to the right guy and ask permission in the right way." (Randy Shore, Vancouver Sun, March 17, 2007, rshore@png.canwest.com). My trips to Lost Lagoon are a ... read more

Spring in the Park Stanley Park has received a lot of media attention due to the damage from the wind storm this last winter, however, the Park is still one of the best sites in Vancouver. The following are photos from early Spring (March 2007), when the first blush of spring started to touch the park. The Park is approximately 400 hectares (that's about 1000 acres), and was opened in September 1888. It was dedicated by Lord Stanley (he was the Governor General of Canada at the time), in October 1889. The Park has approximately 8 million visitors a year. The park has been inhabited by local first nations for thousands of years. In the Coast Salish language, the area of Lost Lagoon is called Ch'elxwa7elch. The current location of the damaged trees in Stanley Park ... read more

Hey there! Fri, Oct. 6, 2006 Cissi & I had a great time in Squamish, B.C. We woke up early and drove to Cheakamus Canyon (30 km north of Squamish), parked at the parking lot and hiked for about 30 SECONDS to our first climb. Climbed all kinds of fun routes. They were slabby, beautifully textured, ranged in grades from 5.7-5.10a (some 2 pitches) and peaceful as anything. Ran into a few other climbers, but otherwise we had the area to ourselves all day! We basically climbed until the sun went down behind the snowcapped mountains. Luckily we were close enough to the car to rappel into the front seat! (Ha, Ha). From there we drove back to the hostel, picked up gear we stored there and drove like mad to Vancouver. The roads were scary ... read more

How can you miss a place you don't even know? I am already longing to go back to the island to pick fresh, plump little plums from the trees in the yard and talk for hours with Dan about photography and with J.D. about his life in Montana. I am sorry that all of these wonderful friends I am making cannot stay in my life forever... I want to walk through the woods, where the trees and ferns and even slugs are bigger than anything I've seen back East. Where you can view the sunset, the mountains, and the ocean all at the same time and know that it is real, that you are not in front of some synthetic screen. And most of all, I want free rides, free food, and not to be lost ... read more

Today we went to Stanley Park and the Vancouver aquarium. We had a great time wondering along the seawall and looking at the ocean, Vancouver's shipping business, and these majestic beautiful trees. I really liked the totem poles. We also went to the Vancouver Aquarium which is in Stanley Park. We got to see lots of fish, but I liked the belugas the best. They had a dolphin show which was very educational, and the sea otters were really cute! Poor Karen had to tolerate 4 biologists having a geeky good time (she deserves treats!). ... read more
