We are having a relaxing day today enjoying a change of pace. Our hotel is only a 5 minute walk from the Chateau, so we headed down for a look at both the chateau and lake during day time. Again the view was incredible as the lake lays at the base where two mountains meet. After Ryan slipped down the small slope onto the frozen lake we went for a walk and took in all its beauty. It was very busy with tourist enjoying the scenery and skating rink on the ice. In the middle of the skating rink there is an ice sculpture of a castle which includes a throne for the king. After having a search around there, in the minus 15 degree weather, quite warm for this time of year we headed inside ... read more

Boxing Day was going to be very different, no Boxing Day cricket or Sydney to Hobart race to watch. We were set for a second day on the mountain. This time with Ash and her friends on the real ski runs. We immediately head up the Lake Louise gondola to the peak of the mountain. A very daunting thought for the both of us. Our day skiing the runs can not be described as successful. We spend much time on our backsides sliding down the snow. However we did both enjoy the day but were relieved when we made it to the bottom with no major injuries. Ash and her friends were very patient with us. We stopped for lunch at a restaurant lodge in the middle of the mountain. It was a different experience to ... read more

We woke up to Ash jumping onto the bed and screaming Merry Christmas. Being on the other side of the world it was still nice waking up on Christmas Day to family. We then set of for s Christmas breakfast at the ski village, it was 8am and still pitch black. After breakfast we signed ourselves up for skiing lessons and hit the mountain. Our lesson went the whole day and was a great way to start skiing. By the end of the day, with a few accidents, we could both successfully ski to the bottom of the learners area. Even though we were not great it was such a nice view from the ski hill we didn't mind taking it slow. Many times both us and the instructor got distracted by the view. We headed ... read more

Hello everyone. We hope you had a great Christmas and boxing day and are enjoying a relaxing break. We have been extra busy during our time in the Rocky Mountains and haven't had time to update the blog. We will break the days into its own blog starting with this blog for the 24th December. There has also been a train derailment in Banff which has cut the phone lines to Lake Louise which has stopped us from updating the blog. Christmas EveWe woke up excited after our dinner and walk home in the snow. Again when we looked out the window we were hit with the beauty of the mountains. Everywhere you looked there was a snow peaked mountain lurking over the town. We started with breaks and planned our day; gondola ride, hot springs ... read more

Had a wonderful dinner last night at the Banffshire Club - very old worldly restaurant - typical of the era it was built! Breaky then up the Sulphur Mountain Gondola in Banff and then took the 364 steps up and down the board walk to get the highest view overlooking Banff and the Banff Springs Resort, just amazing - Mark had acclimatised to the altitude and made it all the way - so proud he did it!!! He was too!!! Then back down to Banff for lunch, had picked out a great little place before we left home, Bruno's Bar and Grill, great lunch with a couple of beers then headed through the rockies to Lake Maurine near the Ten Peaks - another amazing site! The lakes are just gorgeous turquoise color and so clear. Mark ... read more

Soon after breakfast I made my way to the bus station to catch the greyhound to Lake Louise, it’s located next to the train station so I was lucky enough to be there when the Rocky Mountaineer arrived. I would have loved to catch this train but it is extortionate and just caters for the high-end market not the backpacker type. So instead of the train I boarded a packed Greyhound for the 45 minute ride to Lake Louise. The hostel there is the smartest one I’ve been in, it has a sauna! but also one of the most expensive, I had to bite the bullet as it’s the only one in Lake Louise and there isn’t much else to be honest except for the scenery and wildlife. After checking in I set off for what ... read more

Ready to hit the road at 7.30am after having a quick look at Sunwapta Falls. Like all the other falls we have seen over the past few days it was impressive. Today we are driving the Icefield Parkway from Jasper to Lake Louise. It is a stretch of road almost 200km long - but don't expect to be able to drive it in a few hours. The drive is through some pretty spectacular sights and there are photos and hikes to be taken around every corner! The Icefields Parkway (highway 93) traverses high elevation (2,088m) mountain terrain. During the winter months snow chains are required for driving this road. In this blog today I will list the places of interest we stopped along the journey to our destination of Lake Louise: View point to photographs three ... read more

After steeping in 104 degree sulphur hot springs (but no odor), we picnicked with the Big Horn sheep. Then hiked the boardwalk trail to the original hot springs (current one opened in 1986). Next day, head to Lake Louise via the Ice Field Parkway across the Columbia ice fields. We are now camped in a lovely national park campground, with 30 amp electric, much appreciated; onboard water, and will have to dump on our way out (but after dry camping for three nights, we feel like we are in high cotton). Heeere's the pics:... read more
