After picking ourselves up a Budget hire car and stuffing it as full as a Turkey, Marilyn, Richard, Jono and I set off for a long day of driving. We drove the “scenic way” to the Rockies. Past Whistler up through Pemberton, Lillooet, Marble Canyon, Kamloops… and a whole pile of other towns that kept us busy from about 8:30am to 1am. The actual travel part of travel is the least fun. Actually, unpacking is probably even less fun. But we saw some awesome places on the way, snapped them up and consumed them as we blew exhaust-fuelled kisses on our way past. One of them was Joffre Lake, making it my third visit! It never stops being amazing though. It was strange to stand infront of the same Lake that only a month or so ... read more

Our White Christmas has finally arrived! And almost as if I had my finger on a remote control...snow would start to softly fall each time we looked outside. It was very fairytale like...surreal almost! The Delta Lodge laid it on like nothing I've ever experienced before; not one but two massive banquets through the day, a Santa stocking was hanging from every hotel room doorknob in the morning, Santa made an appearance (apparently)...Lauren had no wish to go down and meet him in person in the lobby. There was face painting, a clown making the most amazing balloon creations and festive music and cheer in massive overdoses for all. Walking off brunch After a hefty brunch helping, we decided that we needed to exercise some of those calories off...so we went geocaching! We found ourselves at ... read more

Dear friends, Yesterday Cissi & I decided to check out Banff in the evening. WOW!! We walked the streets in amazement at the spectacle of wealthy tourists, kitschy tourist traps, Japanese tourist groups, high end fashion boutiques (who needs black leather stilettos??, is a new purse a new mountain accessory?... does it make you hike better?), Louis Vuitton, Yuppie yoga wear, an all Christmas store...., basically anything that takes you away from the outdoors that surrounds this lit up mountain Vegas. Bought liquor for the cold evenings.... it's actually been quite warm in the days and moderate in the nights. A chinook has been in the area for the past couple days... hope it stays around for the whole trip everywhere we go (wishful thinking , I know!). Today, we woke up after sleeping with howling ... read more

So, after a few rainy days, we are now in super-sunny Canmore! It's T-shirt weather and we are going to try and climb tomorrow, if this gorgeous weather holds... We've been staying in hostels in Winnipeg, Regina and Waterton Lakes, so we are clean, fed and all whirl-pooled (after a very fast-paced hike to Crypt Lake yeasterday, we ended up stopping at the Waterton Lakes Health Club for some whirl pool action. Leaving us limber and loose for the drive to Canmore).... The drvie from Winnipeg to Regina was brutal. Flat, smooth, flat and flat. And prairie. Thank god for the 110 speed limit in Saskatchewan! Regina was the friendliest city ever, people let you in when driving in the city, they don't pass you on the inside and very helpful. The weather was nice and ... read more

We woke up this morning to a “nice” chill to the air… After spending the night close enough to a stream to hear the running water there was not much lying about once we were awake! The campsite was full of participants from the previous day’s car show—some were looking decidedly seedy! Carl enjoyed looking at the cars, even if most of them had been modified significantly (see the photo from yesterday). Our destination today—Banff National Park!
